But this romance is hitting a rough patch. Pollinators are in steep decline, and science has blind spots. Who are these pollinator A-listers and B-listers, and how can Ireland save them before the credits roll?
Bees: The Pollen-Packing Heartthrobs
Bees are pollination's leading stars. Honey bees (Apis mellifera) and Ireland's native bumble bees (Bombus) make flowers swoon. Bumble bees shake pollen loose from crops like tomatoes, while honey bees tumble through blooms, their fuzzy bodies snagging pollen with ninja-like precision.
But the buzz is fading. In Ireland, 30% of bee species face extinction risks, mirroring global pollinator declines. Habitat loss (farmland and cities now cover nearly half of Earth's land) squeezes bee homes. Pesticides, especially neonicotinoids, disrupt their memory and behaviour.
Though banned for outdoor use in Ireland and the EU since 2018, these chemicals linger: a 2023 study found neonicotinoid residues in pollen collected by honey bees and bumble bees from Irish fields, even without recent applications. Add climate change, which throws flower blooming schedules off-kilter, and bees face a stinging triple threat.

Nature loves a plot twist. In Brazil, scientists found Izecksohn's Brazilian tree frog (Xenohyla truncata), the first known pollinating amphibian, diving into milkfruit flowers with pollen on its back. It's a quirky case, but it highlights how little we know about pollination's full cast.
Though most frogs are strictly insectivores/carnivores, there is one species of frog that is a frugivore (eating primarily raw fruits).

19 osprey chicks arrive in Ireland to be released as part of reintroduction programme
A programme aiming to establish a viable population of ospreys breeding in Ireland is now in its third year. Ospreys were once part of the Irish landscape and ecosystems, but unfortunately, this bird of prey became extinct. It is thought that they became extinct as breeding birds in this country over 150 years ago, but continued to visit the island as part of their migratory pattern. The National Parks and Wildlife Service's (NPWS) five-year reintroduction programme began in 2023. Now in its third year, the NPWS is preparing to release 19 osprey chicks into the wild, with nine chicks released in both 2024 and 2023 in Co. Waterford. Ospreys are fish-eating birds of prey which need habitats close to rivers, lakes or coastal areas ensuring a sufficient supply of fish, the NPWS said. As a result, Ireland is thought to provide the perfect conditions for the chicks. Ospreys are known to be monogamous and faithful to both their mate and their nest. Dr. Philip Buckley of the NPWS, who heads up the osprey reintroduction programme, said there have been ongoing efforts to reintroduce species such as the osprey and white-tailed eagle to Ireland for a number of reasons, especially to improve biodiversity. He explained that ospreys became extinct at a time when people's view of birds of prey was that they were bad and should be eliminated, and that the osprey may have been viewed as a threat to the supply of fish. The osprey is a specialist feeder, relying on medium-sized fish, both marine and fresh water. The bird will fly above the water's surface to locate fish, sometimes gliding and soaring up to 70 metres high. Dr. Buckley said that to restore any species in a country, a detailed analysis must be done to see if the factors that caused extinction are still present. "We looked at that and we concluded that people's attitudes have changed," he told Agriland. "We looked at if the habitat is still suitable, if the food supply is still suitable. "We basically concluded the cause of extinction doesn't pertain anymore and it would be likely the species would survive if they were reintroduced." The osprey is a "medium-sized bird", and occurs on most continents. Dr. Buckley said the birds that breed in north-western countries in Europe, be that Ireland, Britain or Norway, generally migrate to Africa for the winter months. They would typically return to countries like Ireland around April, set up territories and rear their young, before setting off to the warmer climate in September. When the NPWS was determining how many chicks should be released each year to get a population that could become self-sustaining, factors such as the life length, number of offspring produced, and mortality rates were considered. It was decided that around 50 to 60 osprey chicks should be brought in over the five years with the aim of establishing a population of ospreys eventually breeding in Ireland. This is now year three of the programme, and 19 chicks have been brought to Ireland from two locations in Norway in July this year to be released soon. The birds were caught in Norway before they can fly, but at an advanced enough stage that they will survive and are easier to look after, according to Dr. Buckley. They are in holding pens since being brought to Ireland, with a platform simulating a nest, and are fed around three times a day currently, but without seeing humans - "the whole idea is they don't see humans and don't associate us with food". Dr. Buckley said that it will become apparent when the birds are ready to fly by their behaviour. "When they come in first, you can see they might spend more time sleeping. As they get a bit older they'll move out onto the branches or perches, and then maybe after another week they'll start flapping the wings and exercising them, and then you know well these birds are getting ready to fly. "We'll open the pens and let them out, and most of them will fly within three hours, and we do put out food around the area where we've held them. "The idea is to provide them with a food supply because they have no adults to teach them how to fish, so to provide them with something to transition them from being looked after by us to then looking after themselves. "Usually they'll find that food source and stay there until they're ready to migrate sometime in September." Ospreys breed from around three years of age. In the first year they migrate to Africa, they most likely won't return to Ireland or other European countries. They will spend that first summer in Africa, and return in the second or third year. Dr. Buckley said it will be next year when it will really be known if any of the birds released in the first year of the programme have survived and made their way back. "They have to cross large areas of ocean, the Sahara Desert, so the mortality rate is quite high." The percentage that come back could be between 10% and 30%, it is estimated. Dr. Buckley expressed his gratitude to farmers for their cooperation with and support for the reintroduction programme, with the pens holding the birds constructed at two sites on farmland.

‘Well worth viewing': Perseid meteor shower to continue Wednesday night
One of the most eagerly awaited astronomical events of the year – which promised one or two meteors or 'shooting stars' a minute – is set to continue in Irish skies on Wednesday night. Tuesday night saw about 60 meteors an hour darting across the sky and stargazers can expect about half that amount on Wednesday night. 'The Perseids will be half as strong tonight as they were last night, so that's still 10 times more meteors tonight than a normal night, so well worth viewing,' said David Moore from 'The best time to view is dusk until dawn,' he said. 'This year the moon is in the sky so even those in the countryside will have moonlit skies so even suburban viewers will get the same view.' Met Éireann has forecast a humid night with clear spells on Wednesday, however a few showers are possible which could be heavy or thundery. Mr Moore advised stargazers to ensure they are comfortable while looking up. 'Standing with your neck craned back for hours is not comfortable. 'Look anywhere in the sky. If there are clouds look in the clear patches. If totally clear stand with your back to the moon so it does not dazzle you,' he said. 'The paths of the meteors will all point back to the constellation Perseus but you do not have to look at Perseus.' The Perseid meteors are caused by dust particles shed by the comet Swift-Tuttle. The comet, which takes 133 years to orbit the sun, was last seen in Irish skies in 1992. At this time of year, Earth moves through this debris cloud, making one of the most celebrated astronomical events and arguably the most predictable. Particles from the debris cloud subsequently burn up on entering Earth's atmosphere and create flashes of light. The shower is active for several weeks. 'It's such a special time of the year,' said astronomer Danielle Wilcox from Blackrock Castle Observatory, Cork. €16m allocated to cross-border research partnerships including Parkinson's Disease project
THE IRISH GOVERNMENT has announced it has allocated €16m to cross-border research collaborations between higher education institutions in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Among the projects is one to help those suffering with Parkinson's Disease and another to develop cybersecurity to support cross-border infrastructures. The investment is delivered through the North-South Research Programme (NSRP), a collaborative scheme funded by the government through the Shared Island Fund. "Deepening cooperation between higher education institutions and researchers on a cross-border basis to conduct research of economic and social benefit to the whole island is a key priority of the government's Shared Island Initiative," said Taoiseach Micheál Martin. "I am very pleased to see the Higher Education Authority in this second round of the programme enabling four major new institutional cross-border research partnerships with this focus. "I congratulate all of the successful research teams and institutions and look forward to seeing the outputs and benefits that each project will deliver in the years ahead." Partnerships The projects were chosen following a highly competitive process involving 131 applications from 17 higher education institutions, evaluated by international experts. Co-Create has been developed by the National College of Art and Design and Ulster University. It aims to use art and design to create frameworks, toolkits and models for co-creation in areas like healthcare and community-led services. University of Limerick and Queen's University Belfast have joined forces for the CyberUnite project, which aims to secure cross-border critical infrastructure. Its goal is to enhance cyber-resilience and improve economic and national security, developing a unified cybersecurity research ecosystem. Developed by Trinity College Dublin and Queen's University Belfast, Lifelangs aims to foster a shared understanding of linguistic diversity and promoting social cohesion. It will create a centre dedicated to studying the languages and identities shared across different communities across the island of Ireland. Finally, PD-Life will create an all-island Parkinson's Disease research hub that will look at wellbeing and resilience for people living with the condition. Created by University College Cork and Queen's University Belfast, it will focus on areas such as stigma, mental health and physical activity. Each of the four projects will receive up to €4m over a four-year period. 'Potential' "Since my appointment, I have actively engaged in strengthening North-South collaborations between higher-education and research institutions," said James Lawless, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science. "Today's announcement is a clear demonstration of the potential we unlock when we work together at scale. "These projects, spanning cybersecurity, language and identity, Parkinson's Disease research, and inclusive design, demonstrate the potential of what shared research ambition can achieve. "They will foster innovation, inform policy, and enhance quality of life across communities. Crucially, they set the stage for deeper collaboration in the years ahead."
