Townsville, Damai primary schools to move in 2029 due to growing demand for places
Townsville Primary School will move from Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 to the junction of Canberra Walk and Canberra Crescent in Sembawang.
Damai Primary School will relocate from Bedok Reservoir Crescent to Tampines Street 64, next to the upcoming Tampines North MRT station on the Cross Island Line.
There will be no Primary 1 registration for either school from 2025 to 2027. They will admit their first batch of Primary 1 students at their new campuses in 2029 through the 2028 Primary 1 registration exercise.
MOE said that there will be sufficient places in Ang Mo Kio and Bedok for all incoming Primary 1 children living near Townsville and Damai's current locations.
To minimise disruption for existing students in both schools, their existing campuses at Ang Mo Kio and Bedok will remain operational until 2030, allowing students to complete their studies at their schools' current locations.
This means that both schools will operate from two campuses in 2029 and 2030.
The new campus of Townsville Primary School is a 14.1km drive from its current location, while the new Damai Primary School is about 5.2km from its old spot.
In 2023, Guangyang Primary School merged with Townsville Primary School, with the new school retaining the name and location of the latter.
NEW MOE KINDERGARTEN, PRIMARY SCHOOLS
MOE announced in 2022 plans to open a kindergarten at Townsville Primary School's Ang Mo Kio campus.
This MOE kindergarten will not open as planned due to Townsville Primary School's move to East Canberra.
There is already a "steady supply" of preschool places in East Canberra, including three MOE kindergartens within 1km and 2km of Townsville Primary School's new campus, said the ministry.
"The demand for preschool places in Ang Mo Kio will continue to be met by existing preschools in the area," MOE said, adding that the Ang Mo Kio area also has three MOE kindergartens.
MOE had earlier announced the opening of a new kindergarten in Tampines North in 2029. This will be at Damai Primary School's new site.
The ministry also said on Wednesday that two new primary schools will be set up at Chencharu in Yishun and North Coast in Woodlands, by 2031.
This will "accommodate the children of families moving into these estates in the coming years".

Singapore-based Shein reportedly weighs moving back to China to ease path for Hong Kong IPO
[BENGALURU] Fast-fashion retailer Shein Group has considered relocating its headquarters back to China in an effort to gain Beijing authorities' approval for its planned Hong Kong IPO, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday (Aug 19), citing sources. Singapore-headquartered Shein has consulted lawyers on setting up a parent company in mainland China, the report said, adding that discussions were only preliminary with no guarantee of Shein finalising the move. Reuters could not immediately verify the report. Shein did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment. Founded in China, Shein has spent years attempting to list, first in New York and then in London. The company has faced criticism from US and UK politicians while failing to get approval from China's securities regulator for an offshore IPO at a time of increasing tensions between China and the United States. Shein is currently aiming to list in Hong Kong. REUTERS

The Projector announces closure, weeks after saying that it would resume screenings at Golden Mile Tower
Independent cinema operator The Projector announced its sudden exit from the market on Tuesday (Aug 19). The decision is a complete reversal from its previous plans to resume screenings at its Golden Mile Tower outlet. In a statement, The Projector's founder, Karen Tan, said that the decision to shut down the cinema "breaks [their] hearts". "We've fought to keep The Projector alive through every challenge – from breathing new life into a disused cinema at Golden Mile Tower, to weathering the pandemic, to expanding to new spaces," wrote Tan. "But the combination of rising costs, changing audience habits and the worst consumer market conditions in a decade has left us with no viable path forward." The Projector added that it has ceased operations effective immediately. A spokesperson for The Projector separately confirmed with CNA Lifestyle that The Projector "is completely shutting down". Tan has also thanked the team behind The Projector as well as "collaborators, partners and most of all loyal audiences who believed in what [they] were trying to do". "The Projector may be closing, but we hope its spirit will live on in the conversations, ideas and communities we've nurtured. If Singapore wants to thrive, it must find a way for creative and cultural businesses to survive because culture is the cornerstone of identity and civil society," added Tan.
