Gujarat govt official convicted of demanding Rs 4,000 bribe

A sessions court in Gandhinagar has convicted a Class II rank official of the Gujarat government under the Prevention of Corruption Act for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 4,000. Natvarbhai Patel, who was serving as Deputy Executive Engineer in the Kalpsar Mechanical Cell, was sentenced to one year and six months of imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him. The order was pronounced on Wednesday. According to P D Vyas, the public prosecutor in the case, the complaint was filed by a man who used to run a taxi service. In November-December 2008, he had provided taxis on rent to Patel's office. While he received partial payment for his services, an amount of Rs 24,276 remained pending. Before this, the complainant's bills to the tune of Rs 1.29 lakh and Rs 54,000 were cleared and paid by Patel's office. When the complainant followed up with Patel for the remaining dues, Patel allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 4,000 to clear the payment. Subsequently, based on the police complaint, a trap was laid. Patel was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe. Subsequently, a criminal offence was registered at the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Gandhinagar in 2009. The case proceeded under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, which criminalises public servants accepting gratification other than legal remuneration in respect of official acts. Patel, a mid-level officer in a department that comes under the state's Water Resources wing, was convicted after the court found sufficient evidence of him having misused his position to demand and accept illegal gratification.

Babbar Khalsa terror plot foiled: Punjab cops seize IED in Tarn Taran; Rinda-Landa link exposed

A member of the bomb disposal squad shows the recovered IED in Tarn Taran. NEW DELHI: The Punjab's Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) on Thursday averted a major terror attack planned by Pakistan-based Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) operatives Harwinder Rinda and Lakhbir Landa. In a post on X, DGP Gaurav Yadav said that acting on precise intelligence, AGTF teams, along with Tarn Taran Police, launched a swift operation that led to the seizure of the IED before it could reach Rinda's associates in Punjab and wreak havoc. The bomb was discovered in Tarn Taran district, a region known for terror infiltration threats. Yadav said that the IED was safely moved and neutralised by a bomb disposal squad in a controlled explosion. Officials said the IED was powerful enough to cause mass casualties, had it not been intercepted in time. A case has been filed under the Explosives Act at Sirhali Police Station.
