Georgia football ranked in Athlon Sports' preseason top five
Lassan prefaces that Kirby Smart and his squad come into the 2025 season with more question marks than past squads.
Expected starter Gunner Stockton has just two games of experience (the 2024 SEC championship and Sugar Bowl) and one start. However, Georgia did make a strong effort to help him, adding top receiver transfers Noah Thomas (from Texas A&M) and Zachariah Branch (from USC).
The Georgia running game also struggled in 2024 (second-to-last in the SEC in yards per game) and Georgia only has one returning offensive lineman from last year. However, Lassan believes that the talent in the backfield is too good to struggle again next year, believing that sophomore Nate Frazier will have a breakout season as a lead back. Josh McCray and Bo Walker could be interesting pieces behind Frazier, while Cash Jones adds another weapon to the passing game.
Lassan also believes the defense is in transition as well. The Bulldogs lost tons of young talent through the transfer portal and several key starters to the 2025 NFL draft, but Georgia still has stars, such as Christen Miller on the defensive line, CJ Allen on the linebacker core, and cornerback Daylen Everette and safety KJ Bolden in the secondary. Overall, development will be the key to proving the No. 4 ranking true.
Georgia ranks second in the SEC and fourth in the nation behind Ohio State, Penn State, and Texas, who earned the No. 1 spot. Georgia and Texas play each other on Nov. 15 in a potential de facto SEC championship.

Joel Klatt predicts Georgia's College Football Playoff fate
Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt released his preseason College Football Playoff bracket prediction. He predicts Georgia to make the playoffs, but the Bulldogs won't go far. They'll lose to the defending national champions Ohio State in the quarterfinals. Joel Klatt believes that Georgia will be the No. 5 seed in the playoff, losing to Texas in the SEC championship. He projects that the Bulldogs will against the No. 12 Boise State Broncos, who win the Mountain West and earn the Group of Five playoff spot. Klatt has the Bulldogs winning over the Boise State Broncos at Sanford Stadium on their way to the quarterfinal against No. 4 Ohio State, who has a first-round bye. It was a tough decision for Klatt to make. "I can't wrap my head around Georgia," Klatt said on his show. "I think that Ohio State, at that point, will have their quarterback figured out. I think (Matt) Patricia will have the defense figured out. I think that they've got the two best players in the sport, with Jeremiah Smith and Caleb Downs. This is a tight game, this is a coin-flip game, but I'm going to go with the Buckeyes over the Bulldogs in getting to the semifinal." In this scenario, Ohio State would advance to play Big Ten champion Penn State in the semifinal. It would be an interesting rematch of the Peach Bowl that happened on New Year's Eve in 2022. Ohio State built a 38-24 lead by the beginning of the fourth quarter, but Georgia and quarterback Stetson Bennett took a 42-41 lead with less than a minute left to go. Ohio State still had enough time to get into field goal range, but the 50-yard kick by Noah Ruggles sailed left by the time the 2023 year started. Georgia's hoping the same would happen if they faced Ohio State in the playoff this season. Klatt has Ohio State advancing to the national championship, but falling to the Clemson Tigers. Why Are Players Wearing Black Armbands During Leeds United vs Everton? Real Reason Explained
Why Are Players Wearing Black Armbands During Leeds United vs Everton? Real Reason Explained originally appeared on Athlon Sports. On Monday, August 18, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. BST (3:00 p.m. ET, 12:00 p.m. PT), Leeds United return to the Premier League with a home game against Everton at Elland Road. It's the first game back in the new Premier League season for Leeds and there's more to it than just the football. As with every other game this weekend, players from both teams will be wearing black armbands, and fans are already asking what it means. Black armbands have been a part of football for years. They're a way to mourn and pay respect to someone associated with the sport who has died. This time, it's the Premier League that has made the decision to wear, and every club will be taking part. The Reason Behind all Premier League teams wearing Black armbands? It's in memory of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva who sadly passed away in a car accident over the summer. Every game in Matchday 1 of the 2025–26 season will be marked with the same rituals: players wearing black armbands, a minute's silence before kick-off and tribute messages on the screens. The tributes started on Friday, August 15 when Liverpool played Bournemouth in the opening game of the season. Anfield was emotional as fans held banners, observed the silence and joined in a fantastic tribute to their former forward. The tributes continued over the weekend and will end with Leeds vs. Everton on August 18, so this will be a moment of collective mourning that goes way beyond club rivalries. The origins of the tribute go back to the Community Shield between Liverpool and Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium on August 10th, where an emotional ceremony saw wreaths laid by football dignitaries, a minute's silence and fans singing 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. Leeds United vs Everton will be the last match of the Premier League's opening weekend where the players will wear black armbands, closing off Matchday 1 tributes, before business goes back to usual in the Premier League.
