India's solar energy potential has been vastly underestimated until now. A new macro-level assessment by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has recalibrated the country's theoretical solar capacity at 10,830 gigawatts (GW), nearly 15 times higher than the earlier 748 GW projection made in 2014 by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The findings provide a multidimensional view of India's solar deployment capacity.
The report expands far beyond the limited scope of previous assessments, which assumed only 3 per cent of wastelands for solar development. The analysis incorporates a wider spectrum of land-use categories such as – barren and unculturable lands, water bodies for floating solar, rooftops, agri-voltaics, building-integrated photovoltaics, and infrastructure-based solar like railways and highways.
At the core of this reassessment is the vast reserve of barren lands, which alone could support 4,909 GW of ground-mounted solar PV capacity. Rajasthan tops this category with 1,234.6 GW, followed by Madhya Pradesh (731.3 GW), Maharashtra (606.7 GW), and Gujarat (592.6 GW). An additional 100 GW could be drawn from floating solar systems over inland reservoirs, ponds, and aquaculture zones.
Dr. Faruk G. Patel, chairman & MD of KP Group, has had a front-row seat to this rapid evolution. "A decade ago, solar power was still seen as an expensive alternative. Grid parity was a distant dream," he said. "Today, India has surpassed 100 GW of solar capacity and is well on its path to meet the ambitious target of 280 GW by 2030 and of 500 GW in renewable energy by 2030." Patel also highlighted how tariffs have fallen by over 70 per cent, turning solar into the most affordable source of new energy. KP Group itself has grown from a 1.5 MW plant in 2016 to a ~6 GW portfolio, with its largest 645 MWp project underway in Khavda, Gujarat.
Together, rural and urban rooftops could support 960 GW of capacity, with 600 GW in rural areas and 360 GW in urban zones. These figures account for variations in household size, roof area, and shading, offering a more accurate picture of solar potential across diverse environments.
Decentralized systems like rooftop solar have been key to this evolution. Rahul Raizada, partner - Climate and Energy at PwC India, notes, "The Indian solar industry has seen fantastic growth from 3.7 GW in FY15 to 106 GW by end of FY25 (~40 per cent CAGR) in the last decade in terms of installed capacity. Clearly the growth has been fuelled by policy initiatives such as VGF, solar park schemes, PM Kusum, PM Surya Ghar Yojana, RPOs and Green Open Access." Raizada identifies three pillars in the sector's rise: utility-scale installations, decentralized solutions like rooftop systems and agri-pumps, and a maturing solar manufacturing ecosystem. "The manufacturing ecosystem development has not only created jobs but also added to the overall GVA in the economy," he adds.
Agri-voltaics, an increasingly important category in India's solar blueprint, offers another 4,177 GW of potential. Horticulture areas dominate with 4,059 GW, followed by tea (25 GW) and coffee (93 GW) plantations. The report recommends that agricultural universities and Krishi Vigyan Kendras lead localized pilot studies to validate real-world feasibility across agro-climatic zones.
The scope also includes 684 GW of capacity from infrastructure-based applications, based on 2024 estimates from GIZ. This segment includes installations along railways (79 GW), roads (75 GW), urban surfaces (221 GW), and building-integrated PV systems (309 GW).
Mukesh Gupta, co-founder, Maxvolt Energy, lauds the sector's transformation over the last decade. "With a mere 2.8 GW national capacity in 2014 to over 108 GW in present times, this 3,450 per cent increase in capacity is a testament to India's committed approach towards carbon footprint reduction. In 2025, the country ranks fourth in total renewable energy capacity, which was 220.10 GW on March 31, and solar, being the principal contributor, is expected to meet India's 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030."

Is It Safe to Fly on Boeing 787 Dreamliners?
Boeing is once again under scrutiny after a tragic Air India crash on June 12 involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The flight, en route from Ahmedabad to London, went down shortly after takeoff and has claimed at least 270 lives. Just days after the deadly crash, another Air India flight turned back on a route from Hong Kong to New Delhi due to technical issues and it, too, was a 787 Dreamliner. Now, travelers have questions about whether or not it is safe to fly on Boeing's 787 Dreamliner plane. (According to aviation analytics firm Cirium, there are 1,148 Boeing 787s in service worldwide.) While there is an investigation looking into what caused the Air India disaster, no official determination has been issued yet. Because of the pending investigation, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is not currently planning on grounding the U.S. fleet of Boeing 787s. According to Simple Flying, the FAA does not have enough data to make that sweeping decision. At the time of publication, the Wall Street Journal reported that the AirIndia plane's emergency-power generator was active when it crashed last week. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy said there needs to be more information before any decisions are made. "They have to get on the ground and take a look,' Duffy told Reuters. 'But again right now it'd be way too premature. People are looking at videos and trying to assess what happened, which is never a strong, smart way to make decisions on what took place." This means that as the investigation continues, it is possible the FAA could decide to ground U.S. 787s. And with two major U.S. carriers (United Airlines and American Airlines) relying on the aircraft, a nationwide grounding would cause massive service disruptions. United is one of the largest operators of the Dreamliners in the world: in 2023, the carrier placed an order for 50 more of the planes and already has 78 Dreamliners in service, according to Planespotters. This is not the first time the aviation giant has faced serious questions. Over the past five years, Boeing has been linked to a string of high-profile incidents, including two fatal crashes involving its 737 Max Max planes in Indonesia (2018) and Ethiopia (2019). More recently, in 2024, there were non-fatal incidents like a door flying off a Boeing plane and another jet dropping suddenly in altitude. Despite the ongoing investigation, it is clear there are still safety concerns. Air India canceled five 787 flights since the Thursday crash. Even though safety checks were conducted on the planes, Air India cited a need for increased safety precautions, according to Aviation A2Z. Five Major AI Developments This Week
From Google and Amazon to Adobe and Zoho, companies are building more intelligent tools to harness AI's full potential Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. You're reading Entrepreneur India, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media. From workforce transformations at Amazon to AI-powered cyclone prediction models by Google, the rapid rollout of generative AI (GenAI) and agentic systems is not only altering how work is done but also redefining where innovation needs to focus next. In India, institutions like IIT Roorkee are stepping in with structured upskilling efforts, while companies such as Adobe and Zoho are building more intelligent tools to harness AI's full potential. Here's a roundup of five key developments shaping the AI ecosystem globally and in India. Amazon's AI Drive to Cut Jobs but Create New Roles Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has confirmed what many in the tech world had anticipated. The company's total corporate workforce will shrink over the coming years, driven by generative AI (GenAI) and intelligent agents automating routine processes. "As we roll out more Generative AI and agents, it should change the way our work is done. We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs," Jassy wrote in a note to employees. The sentiment echoes a broader transformation underway across industries, where AI is rapidly enhancing productivity but reducing the need for certain job roles particularly those that are repetitive or clerical. Notably, while Amazon saw a 2.03 per cent employee growth in 2024 (with a total headcount of 1.56 million), the automation wave signals a likely reversal of this trend. Still, the company remains bullish on India, where it claims to have created 1.4 million direct and indirect jobs in the past four years and aims to generate another 600,000 by 2025. Internally, Amazon is already deploying AI to upgrade its fulfillment forecasting, customer service chatbots, and product detail pages. Adobe Takes Firefly Mobile with Partnered AI Models AI image generation is no longer just a web phenomenon, Adobe has officially taken it to mobile phones. On Tuesday, the company launched a dedicated smartphone app for Firefly, its AI-powered image generation tool, now embedded with models from partner firms such as Ideogram, Luma AI, Pika, and Runway. Firefly's mobile expansion aligns with the social media-driven explosion of AI visuals, with OpenAI's anime-style images already attracting massive online traffic. The app allows unlimited basic generation for Adobe subscribers, with additional charges for premium models consistent with its web pricing, starting at USD10 per month. "Even for many of our individual customers, that promise of the commercial safety and the story about how Firefly is trained continues to be a really important differentiator," said Ely Greenfield, Adobe's Chief Technology Officer for Digital Media. Google's AI Models Take on Cyclones with Forecasting Website In a direct move to enhance climate resilience using AI, Google DeepMind and Google Research have launched a new website, 'Weather Lab' dedicated to showcasing experimental AI models that predict tropical cyclones. These models can simulate 50 storm scenarios up to 15 days in advance, potentially outpacing traditional meteorological tools. In its recently released research paper (not yet peer-reviewed), Google claims the five-day track predictions for cyclones in the North Atlantic and East Pacific were 87 miles closer to actual tracks compared to the industry-leading ECMWF models in 2023 and 2024. Google's latest system is trained on Europe's ERA5 dataset and is already being tested in collaboration with the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC), although the tool remains strictly research-focused for now. IIT Roorkee and Futurense Launch India's First AIOps Certification Recognising the critical need to bridge the AI development-deployment gap, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, in partnership with Futurense, has announced the launch of India's first Advanced Certification in AI Engineering and AIOps. Scheduled to begin in August 2025, this nine-month programme is designed to build full-stack AI capabilities among working professionals. The course uniquely focuses on deploying GenAI at scale, enabling participants to work across AWS, Azure, and GCP, and train in tools such as LangChain, Hugging Face, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Docker, and Kubernetes. From multi-agent workflows to cloud-native orchestration, the curriculum addresses the pressing issue of GenAI pilots failing to convert into enterprise-level solutions. With a fee of INR 1.25 lakh (plus GST), the programme is open to STEM graduates with at least 50 per cent marks and a preference for professionals with one year of experience. All applicants must clear a pre-screening test to qualify. Zoho Unveils Zia Hubs for Deeper AI Integration in WorkDrive Zoho, the global SaaS provider headquartered in India, has introduced Zia Hubs, a next-generation capability within Zoho WorkDrive aimed at unlocking intelligence from unstructured business data. With this launch, Zoho takes a significant leap in embedding agentic AI across its product ecosystem. According to Zoho CEO Mani Vembu, Zia Hubs addresses the challenge that 80 per cent of enterprise data is unstructured and often hidden within emails, documents, or transcripts. "Zia Hubs bring a common model to company data, exposing unused information to powerful capabilities and services, including agentic AI, comprehensive analysis and accurate unified search," Vembu said in a statement. Currently available in early access, Zia Hubs enables users to create focused spaces (or "hubs") within WorkDrive where AI can act contextually on the stored content. A full rollout is expected by Q3 FY25.
