Olympic champ Pan crashes out again in second worlds flop

SINGAPORE: China's Olympic champion and world record holder Pan Zhanle said he "wasn't in good shape" after crashing out in the semi-finals of the 100m freestyle at swimming's world championships on Wednesday.
Pan, who stunned the world by winning gold in Paris in a new record time of 46.40sec a year ago, finished 10th in the semi-finals in Singapore, missing out on the eight-man final.
His time of 47.81 was a full second behind the fastest qualifier, American Jack Alexy.
"To put it plainly, I just wasn't in good shape today," said the 20-year-old Pan.
"I'll continue to work hard."
Pan also flopped in the 200m freestyle in Singapore, going out in the heats.
Australia's Kyle Chalmers, who qualified for the 100m final from the same semi-final as Pan, said his Chinese rival was "probably struggling a little bit."
"He said to me this morning after the heat, 'I am tired' after we touched the wall, so I'm assuming he's not at his best," said Chalmers.
"He had such a successful Olympic year last year. A lot of Australian Olympic athletes like myself have struggled the year after the Olympics, historically.
"I'm sure he's probably even more famous than I ever was in Australia."
Pan's win in Paris turned heads in the swimming world, with Australian Olympian-turned swimming coach Brett Hawke questioning its legitimacy.
Hawke, an Australian Olympic sprint freestyler himself who went on to mentor Brazil's Cesar Cielo, the first man to break 47 seconds, claimed the world record time was "not humanly possible."-AFP

Glasner says demotion to Conference League would punish 'innocent' Palace

LONDON: Oliver Glasner believes that if Crystal Palace are demoted to the Conference League it would feel "like we are punished, but being innocent". London club Palace qualified for the Europa League, by winning last season's English FA Cup. But the Eagles fell foul of UEFA rules governing multi-club ownership. European football's governing body determined that as of March 1, American businessman John Textor had control or influence at Palace and French club Lyon. Under UEFA rules Palace are unable to compete in the same European competition and Lyon held on to the Europa League spot by virtue of their higher league position. Palace, however, appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, with club chairman Steve Parish appearing at a hearing yesterday and a verdict expected Monday. As Parish was speaking in Lausanne, Eagles manager Glasner was addressing reporters in London ahead of tomorrow's Community Shield, the traditional curtain-raiser to the English season, between the reigning Premier League champions, Liverpool, and FA Cup-holders, Palace, at Wembley. "If you get punished when you feel innocent it's tough," said Glasner. "And it feels like this. If we play Conference League it feels like we are punished, but being innocent. On the other side, if we had ended the season on position seven and go straight into the Conference League, we all would have celebrated. "So these are the two feelings we have. But again, if you haven't done something wrong and you feel punished, you never feel good. So I think it's all of us, it's the same, and this is how we feel, or how we felt about the UEFA decision." Textor sold his stake in Palace to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, a deal completed in late July. Glasner is adamant the row over which European competition Palace should play in has not distracted the team ahead of their Wembley showdown with Liverpool. "No, not at all," said the Austrian. "The first meeting we had after, when we met, it was just mentioned once. One slogan for us is 'we want to focus on the things we can influence', and so we can't influence the decision of UEFA, we have no influence on the decision of CAS. "So it just makes no sense, and the players really did very well the whole pre-season and training, worked very hard. We said, OK, on the 11th of August we will get the final verdict, and we will accept it, so it's the only thing we can do."

Nawaz sparks Pakistan to five-wicket ODI win over West Indies

TAROUBA, (Trinidad and Tobago): Hasan Nawaz made a triumphant one-day international debut, going 63 not out on Friday to power Pakistan over West Indies by five wickets in their ODI series opener. Nawaz and Hussain Talat formed a sixth-wicket partnership of 104 not out to rally the visitors in the day-night affair, with game two on Sunday and the concluder on Tuesday. West Indies went 280 all out with Evin Lewis leading the way on 60 from 62 balls with three sixes and five fours while Shai Hope added 55 and Roston Chase contributed 53. Needing 281 to win, Pakistan got 53 runs from Mohammad Rizwan before he was bowled lbw by Shamar Joseph in the 38th over with the visitors still 101 runs shy of victory, setting the stage for heroics by Nawaz and Talat. Nawaz struck for six on the second ball of the 49th over and blasted the winning shot to the boundary off the final delivery by Joseph, giving Pakistan the victory with seven balls to spare. In all, Nawaz reached 63 on 54 balls with three sixes and five fours while Talat finished on 41 from 37 balls with one six and four fours. Pakistan won the toss and sent the hosts in to bat first, a choice that paid quick dividends when Brandon King was taken for four on the fifth ball of the opening over, bowled by Shaheen Shah Afridi — his first of four wickets — and caught by Babar Azam off stump. Lewis exited on the last ball of the 19th over, bowled by Saim Ayub and caught by Afridi. West Indies captain Hope was bowled by Afridi and caught by Rizwan on the second ball of the 41st over, leaving the hosts on 200 for five. Romario Shepherd, was sent off on four on the last ball of the 43rd over. Chase made the third half-century for the West Indies with a boundary but went out on the next ball, caught by Azam and bowled by Naseem Shah, who also bowled out Gudakesh Motie and Jediah Blades on the last two Pakistan deliveries. — AFP

Ter Stegen defends stance after Barcelona removes captaincy

GOALKEEPER Marc-Andre ter Stegen has publicly addressed Barcelona's decision to strip him of the captaincy and initiate disciplinary proceedings. 'In recent weeks, many things have been said about me - some of them entirely unfounded,' he wrote on Instagram. The club took action after disputes arose over Ter Stegen's fitness following back surgery in late July. Reports suggest Barcelona sought to classify his injury as long-term to adjust their wage bill under La Liga rules. 'I am fully willing to collaborate with the club's management to resolve this matter,' Ter Stegen stated. Barcelona's financial struggles could impact their ability to register new players for the upcoming season. Ter Stegen denied that his surgery affected the club's transfer dealings or contract renewals. 'The decision to undergo surgery was fully approved by the club,' he emphasised. He reiterated his commitment to Barcelona and dismissed claims that his absence would hinder squad registration. 'My commitment to these colors remains absolute,' he affirmed. His position is now under threat from new signings Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny. If disciplinary action proceeds, Ter Stegen could face contract termination under La Liga regulations. - AFP
