Calls for justice after Mpumalanga man allegedly sets women alight
Advocacy groups fighting against gender-based violence (GBV) are calling on the government to deal harshly with perpetrators.
This is after a man from Emalahleni, Mpumalanga, was arrested and denied bail for allegedly causing burn injuries to Nompumelelo Gumede, 21, and Mbali Hill, 23.
They were burnt when Gumede's boyfriend allegedly set alight a room with the two women locked inside last week.
The 35-year-old man appeared in the Emalahleni Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on two charges of attempted murder.
The case has been postponed for further investigations. He is expected to appear again in the same court next Thursday.
Government urged to act decisively
An activist fighting against GBV, Prince Ntsikelelo Soga, the executive director of the organisation I Am That Man, said: 'Our hearts are heavy with grief and outrage over incidents like this.
'The brutal violence against women and children is a wound that cuts deep into the fabric of our society and it's a crisis that demands our collective action.
'We are talking about real people, mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends who deserve to live without fear of violence.
'We need to come together to create a culture of respect, empathy and accountability, where men take responsibility for their actions and work towards creating a safe environment for everyone.

'We believe in the transformative power of mentorship, education and community support in addressing GBV, declared as a pandemic by President Cyril Ramaphosa. We call on everyone to join us in this fight.'
Women in critical condition
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdluli said Gumede and Hill were in a critical condition in hospital.
He said the suspect had a child with Gumede, while Hill is her relative.
'The women sustained serious burn wounds and were taken to hospital by a community member. The matter was reported to the police in Vosman and after an investigation he was apprehended on the same night.'
A call to work together
Mpumalanga acting provincial commissioner Major-General Zeph Mkhwanazi promised that investigators would work collaboratively with the prosecutors to ensure the man gets the punishment he deserves.
'We hereby make a clarion call to faith-based organisations, community leaders and civil society groups to continue to work collaboratively with us, as public servants, in fighting GBVF.'
It is not the first time a man from Emalahleni has burnt a partner. In 2023 a woman was hospitalised after her husband allegedly poured boiling water over her.
Zodwa Ngwenya sustained injuries on the face and body.

Criminologist slams 'slow' police response Rural criminologist Dr Witness Maluleke said it was devastating that it took four burned bodies before the police could arrest the suspect. 'It's about time for our policing system to prioritise human lives. This is too much, dangerous to handle and worrying. There is no justification for their slow investigations,' he said. Maluleke said losing women in this manner is inhumane and justice is demanded for the victims families. Gender-based violence remains rampant Criminal law expert Cornelia van Graan said South Africa has extensive domestic violence laws and projects on gender-based violence. However, despite the legislative framework, crimes against women were on the rise and the war against women continued. 'It is time to ensure the adequate training of police officials,' said Van Graan. In another incident this year, Vanderbijlpark police found two bodies in an open field under trees near Louisrus plots. Police spokesperson sergeant Sabelo Sigcu said police found two decomposing bodies tied with rope to their hands and feet, with multiple bruises after an anonymous call was logged. SAPS secures nearly 3 000 convictions in fight against GBV In celebration of Women's Month, the SAPS has shared notable progress made in its fight against GBV and crimes targeting women and children. Between April 1, 2024 and March 31, the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) units across the country secured 2 941 convictions and arrested 22 219 suspects involved in sexual offences, femicide, child abuse and other violent crimes against vulnerable individuals. Leading the charge is Major General Mmantsheke Lekhele, a seasoned female detective overseeing national FCS operations. Suspect who allegedly murdered wife and girlfriend found dead
The man accused of killing two women, including his pregnant ex, has been found dead in a field near Lusikisiki. The police found the man who allegedly killed his pregnant girlfriend and his wife in Ngobozana, Eastern Cape, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Ngobozana area in Lusikisiki was left reeling on Tuesday as the police hunted a 42-year-old man for allegedly shooting and killing two women. The suspect first allegedly shot his girlfriend, Dolly Voxeka, 22, at a tavern in the Chithwayo locality after she tried to break up with him. Man accused of killing wife and girlfriend Voxeka's mother said her daughter had two young children and was expecting a third when the suspect took her life. 'He said to Dolly that you can't say you don't want to be with me now. I am also unhappy in my home because of your situation [pregnancy],' the grieving mother said. Voxeka ran to a tavern to escape, but the 42-year-old followed her and allegedly shot her there. 'This man killed my child, who was born in 2003; at that time, he was a grown man. He killed my child and left her young children,' the inconsolable mother said. The suspect then proceeded to his home in Unity Park, where he allegedly shot his wife while she was asleep. According to reports, her grandchildren were sleeping with her at the time. Found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound He fled the scene in the family's vehicle, which police later discovered abandoned. On Wednesday, the police announced the discovery of the man's body in Gqathula locality, approximately 10km outside the Lusikisiki CBD. Following the double murders, an intensive search ensued until community members found a man's body in an open field with a 9mm pistol nearby. The deceased was positively identified as the suspect in the Ngobozana murders. Inquest docket The Lusikisiki police have opened an inquest docket to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
