China issues safety warning for its nationals studying in Philippines
Beijing, Jul 18 (AP) China's Education Ministry issued a safety warning for Chinese students in the Philippines after what it said were a series of criminal incidents targeting them.
The brief warning Friday did not identify any specific incidents but told students to increase their safety awareness should they choose to study in the Philippines. The number of Chinese students in the country was not given but enrolments have fallen to just a few hundred in recent years, according to the Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post.
Relations between the governments of China and the Philippines are particularly tense due to disputes over maritime claims in the South China Sea, which China claims almost in its entirety. China has used water cannons and other non-lethal shipboard deterrents to drive off Philippine fishing boats.
Politically, China has dismissed a UN-backed court decision in The Hague that ruled out most of China's claims in the South China Sea and has expressed resentment over close ties between the US and Manila.

UK prosecutors say rocks, eggs thrown at police during asylum hotel protests
London, Jul 21 (AP) Rocks and eggs were thrown at police as they tried to protect a hotel near London being used as accommodation for asylum seekers, prosecutors said Monday as a man arrested in connection with the incident appeared in court. More than 100 protesters — some wearing British flags and releasing red, white and blue smoke — gathered at the Bell Hotel, in Epping Forest, on Sunday as demonstrators gathered to vent their anger after a man was arrested in the area on suspicion of sexual assault. Chanting 'save our kids" and 'send them home," the demonstration escalated, with projectiles thrown at police vans blocking the entrance. Officers escorted a counter-protester from the area after demonstrators surrounded her. A similar protest took place last Thursday. 'Disappointingly, we have seen yet another protest, which begun peacefully, escalate into mindless thuggery with individuals again hurting one of our officers and damaging a police vehicle," Chief Superintendent Simon Anslow of the Essex Police said in a statement on Monday. 'For anyone who thinks we will tolerate their thuggery, think again." The protests come amid escalating tensions over the rising number of asylum seekers who are being housed at government expense in hotels around the UK. Those pressures flared into days of rioting last month in Northern Ireland after two teenagers were arrested on charges of sexual assault. The attacker was a 17-year-old who was born in the UK to parents from Rwanda and was not an asylum seeker, as had been rumoured. Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government has acknowledged concerns about immigration and made tackling irregular migration a priority. As Parliament debated the unrest in Epping Forest on Monday, Diana Johnson, the policing minister, said there was no justification for the violence. The protests outside the hotel were triggered by the arrest of a 38-year-old asylum seeker who was charged with sexual assault after he allegedly attempted to kiss a 14-year-old girl. The man, who denies the charges, was remanded into custody following a court appearance on July 10. 'We don't take sides, we arrest criminals and we have a duty to ensure no-one is hurt — plain and simple,"Anslow said. 'I know the people of Essex know what we're about, so I know they won't believe the rubbish circulating online that is designed to do nothing more than inflame tensions and trouble." Epping Forest District Council, which provides local government services in the area, condemned the violence but said it had long opposed the central government's decision to use the Bell Hotel to house asylum seekers. 'We have consistently shared concerns with the Home Office that the Bell Hotel is an entirely unsuitable location for this facility and should close," the council's leader, Chris Whitbread, said in a statement last week. 'We continue to press Home Office officials for the immediate closure of the site and are encouraged that our local MPs are now actively supporting our call." Notorious Ecuadoran drug trafficker Adolfo Macias has pleaded not guilty to narcotics charges in a court in the United States on Monday, nearly a month after he was arrested again after he escaped from a maximum security penitentiary in 2024. The leader of the Los Choneros gang delivered his 'not guilty" plea in a federal court in Brooklyn through his lawyer and with the help of an interpreter, AFP reported. The man denied seven charges, which included drug trafficking and arms trafficking – which is punishable by 20 years to life imprisonment. 'As alleged, the defendant served for years as the principal leader of Los Choneros, a notoriously violent transnational criminal organization, and was a ruthless and infamous drug and firearms trafficker," US attorney Joseph Nocella said in a statement ahead of hearing on Monday. 'The defendant and his co-conspirators flooded the United States and other countries with drugs and used extreme measures of violence in their quest for power and control." In April, the US Attorney's Office filed charges against Macias for allegedly being involved in cocaine trafficking, conspiracy, and gun-related crimes, including smuggling weapons. The flight carrying Macias from Ecuador arrived in New York state late Sunday. Last week, Macias—who was once a taxi driver but later became a crime leader—agreed in a court in Quito to be sent to the US to face these charges. Macias is the first person from Ecuador to be extradited under a new law passed last year. The law was approved after a public vote, where President Daniel Noboa asked citizens to support tougher action against criminal gangs. Ecuador, once a peaceful country located between Colombia and Peru—the world's top cocaine producers—has seen a rise in violence as rival gangs linked to Mexican and Colombian cartels fight for power. In January 2024, after Macias escaped from prison, President Noboa declared a state of 'internal armed conflict". He sent the military and tanks into the streets to take down the gangs. Macias's escape led to a wave of violence and a large operation by police and the military to catch him. The government even offered a $1 million reward for information that would lead to his capture. On June 25, Macias was found hiding in a bunker under floor tiles in a luxury house in Manta, a port city known as the base of his gang, Los Choneros. President Noboa said Macias should be extradited 'the sooner the better."
