U.S. presses for Google to share data by citing Yahoo Japan deal

U.S. antitrust enforcers reached back to a deal Google struck 15 years ago to argue that the Alphabet unit should once again share information with third parties, this time to end its illegal monopoly of online search.
Google's agreement in 2010 to provide Yahoo Japan with access to search index data applied only to Google's Japanese-language index, not its global index. But Justice Department lawyer David Dahlquist said in court Friday it showed Google had voluntarily shared data with others in the past.
Google has been pushing back on the remedies proposed by the U.S. to address its search dominance — one of which is sharing search data with rivals. Google has claimed that would imperil user privacy and put its intellectual property at risk.
The Yahoo deal was revisited as part of a three-week trial that will determine how Google should restore competition to online search after U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta ruled last year that the tech giant had illegally maintained a monopoly in the market. In a separate antitrust case before a different judge, the Justice Department urged Friday that Google be ordered to sell key parts of its advertising technology to address a ruling that it illegally monopolizes much of the market for placing ads on the web.
The government wants Google to divest itself of its Chrome browser, license some search data to competitors and stop paying for exclusive positions on other apps and devices. Google has countered that the government's proposals are too extreme, saying they would hurt American consumers and the economy, as well as weaken U.S. technological leadership.
The document detailing the Yahoo accord was presented during cross-examination of Jesse Adkins, a Google director of product management for search syndication, who oversaw implementation of the agreement for a number of years. The deal called for Google to share document IDs, URLs, and various signals like popularity and spam scores.
"You're aware, sir, that the Yahoo Japan agreement is actually the foundation for plaintiff's data-sharing remedy in this manner?' Dahlquist asked as he walked Adkins through the different points of the agreement in court.
"I will take your word for it,' Adkins responded.
Google has long had a relationship with Yahoo Japan, a service unrelated to the U.S.-based Yahoo search engine, to provide it with search results and some backend work related to search advertising. During questioning, Google's lawyer sought to clarify that the tech giant had agreed to share portions of its Japanese-language search index solely to have Yahoo Japan assess the quality of Google's search results and provide feedback to Google.
Adkins also testified that Yahoo Japan needed the data that Google shared to make sure that Google's search results complied with local laws, for instance around properly classifying adult websites. The agreement evolved over time, Adkins said, with Google later providing a more limited set of data to Yahoo Japan in real-time rather than the bulk data dumps it had in the past.
Google's next witness was Eric Muhlheim, the chief financial officer of Mozilla, who discussed the importance of its partnership with the search giant for its revenue model. Last year, Mozilla — maker of the popular Firefox browser — brought in $570 million, Muhlheim testified. Of that revenue, 85% came from Google, which pays Mozilla for an exclusive position on the Firefox browser.
In the short term, Muhlheim said, Mozilla's U.S. revenue would "drop precipitously' if the company were forced to switch to a different provider for Firefox's built-in search engine and no longer received compensation from Google under its longstanding revenue-sharing agreement.
"The ensuing hole in our revenue would have to be overcome by pretty significant cost cuts across the business,' Muhlheim said. The remedy would also decrease the amount of money the company could invest in its own software and make it less competitive, he added.
It could "start a downward spiral of usage as people defected from a browser, which could at the end of the day put Firefox out of business,' he said.
If Google were barred from paying for an exclusive position on Mozilla's Firefox browser, Muhlheim testified, the company would be on the lookout for alternatives. "But we'd really be struggling in the meantime,' he said.
In the last year, Muhlheim said the company has explored other options, including discussions with Microsoft about its Bing web browser taking the Mozilla's default search engine slot. But ultimately, Mozilla's assessment was that Bing wouldn't monetize as well as Google.
Muhlheim added that he thought Microsoft could reduce the amount of revenue it was willing to share with Mozilla over time if it were the only strong competitor for the search engine browser slot.
In a telling exchange near the end of Muhlheim's testimony, Mehta asked whether Mozilla would benefit from having "at least one other competitor' besides Google with equal quality of service competing for the search engine slot in the Firefox browser. Muhlheim answered that this would be a "better' world for Mozilla.
"Do you believe that the market conditions that exist today could achieve the outcome that you're talking about either in the short term or the long term?' Mehta asked.
"In some ways, it's hard to know, because AI is coming in. One could imagine that the amount of funding and the way people are working' in AI would create that world, Muhlheim responded. "So I don't think it's out of the question.'

Japanese officials will be watching for changes in Seoul's stance toward Tokyo under Lee, a liberal known for his hard-line stance on wartime issues related to Japan's 1910-1945 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula, including compensation for Korean laborers. Ishiba said he wants to promote frank dialogue and exchanges between the neighboring nations to make their connections even stronger, pointing out that Lee said during his presidential election campaign he views Japan as an important partner. "The importance of holding summit talks at an early date and engaging in 'shuttle diplomacy' won't change," Ishiba said, referring to the practice of the leaders visiting each other's countries. While wartime history has cast a pall over bilateral ties, the two nations have seen increased people-to-people exchanges. South Korea is a popular destination for Japanese tourists and vice versa. "Japan and South Korea have been deepening exchanges across a wide range of areas. TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japanese police have arrested four people for allegedly selling at an online auction elephant tusks as mammoth tusks to evade a trade ban, police said Wednesday. Nobumasa Daigo, a 58-year-old executive of Daigo Ivory Co. that processes and sells ivory products, and three other family members who work for the company based in Saitama Prefecture near Tokyo were arrested Monday on suspicion of violating the Unfair Competition Prevention Act that prohibits misleading labeling of goods. Tokyo's Metropolitan Police Department, which led the investigation, suspects the company annually sold elephant tusks and ivory products worth around 100 million yen ($695,000) by labelling them as coming from mammoths, an extinct species. The four were arrested on suspicion of selling such products totaling some 126,500 yen to four male customers via an auction site between October 2022 and November 2023, police said, adding the case came to light after a tip from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The suspects have admitted to the allegations, according to the police. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, also known as the Washington Convention, bans in principle international trade in ivory to thwart the threat of poaching of elephants. Elephant tusks have been traded under the guise of mammoth tusks as they are hard to distinguish, according to environmental organization the Japan Tiger and Elephant Fund. In Japan, commercial trade in elephant tusks is allowed if they are certified by a state-backed organization as legally obtained tusks.

New Studio Ghibli Uniqlo T-shirt line coming to the U.S., Japan left out once again【Photos】

Eight Ghibli anime movies inspire new collection of tees and sweatshirts. Uniqlo has announced some pretty big-name collaborations with the anime/manga world this summer, including new partnerships with Pokémon and Ai Yazawa. But the casual clothing chain isn't done adding anime flare to fans' wardrobes yet, as they've now announced a brand-new line of Studio Ghibli apparel. However, as has become oddly the norm for Uniqlo Ghibli collections, once again these items won't be offered in Japan. Instead, they appear to be exclusive (at least for now) to Uniqlo U.S.A. As with the previous Uniqlo Ghibli items, these designs were created by Thai artist Kanyada Phatan, who contributes photography and poetry to Neppu, a monthly magazine published by Studio Ghibli. The new collection consists of both short-sleeved T-shirts and long-sleeved sweatshirts, featuring characters from eight Ghibli anime films, including, of course, My Neighbor Totoro, with the Catbus hanging out near the nape of your neck on this shirt. While some of the designs take their illustrations directly from their source anime, others are original creations, like on the Totoro sweatshirt, which has some Soot Sprites congregating near the left cuff. The Howl's Moving Castle design uses pretty much the entire front of the shirt as a canvas for the titular mobile architecture… …and there's no missing No Face, blazingly emblazoned in triplicate across the front of the Spirited Away sweatshirt, which also bears the film's Japanese title, Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi. ▼ This time there's a Radish Spirit hanging out on the sleeve. Some of the designs are double-sided, with graphics on both the front and back, like with the Princess Mononoke sweatshirt. Set in a forest green field on the front is monster princess San, accompanied with raised text of the film's promotional poster tagline in Japan, 'Ikiro' ('Live' or 'Survive'). San appears on the back as well, underneath Ashitaka, with the movie's Japanese-text title, Mononoke-hime, overlapping them. There's more princess-related attire with the The Tale of the Princess Kaguya T-shirt… …and another Ghibli anime that doesn't get a lot of merchandising attention, Pom Poko, is here too. Along with the movie's Japanese title and the kanji character for tanuki (狸), the text on the back identifies the wearer as a member of the human-observing tanuki research team, while the front graphic is, as far as our analysis can tell, the first-ever depiction of testicles on a Uniqlo T-shirt. ▼ Though these are culturally relevant testicles. A less ballsy option is this Kiki's Delivery Service sweatshirt, which is both dual-sided and bilingual. Rounding out the single-movie designs, The Boy and the Heron gets two pieces, a T-shirt with the Gray Heron unnervingly saying 'My Dear' on the front while the back reminds you of who made the movie as the scene-stealing Warawara remind you of just how adorable the little marshmallow-like creatures are. The sweatshirt flips their positions around, with the Warawara on the front and the Gray Heron on the back. And finally, rounding out the adult-sized collection is an overarching Studio Ghibli T-shirt, with illustrations of Porco Rosso's protagonist, Nausicaa, Ponyo, Castle in the Sky's Dola, and The Wind Rise's Ka-14 aircraft, which would eventually evolve into the Imperial Japanese Navy's World War II Zero fighter plane. The T-shirts are all priced at US$24.90, and the sweatshirts at US$39.90.
