Auburn claims 4 additional 'national championships' on its football resume
The Tigers, for decades, boasted titles in 1957 and 2010. They also claimed the 1913, 1983 and 1993 seasons as meeting national championship qualifications.
Now, though, athletic director John Cohen is adding titles from 1910, 1914, 1958 and 2004 to the program's resume. It's laudable by some and laughable by others.
'For too long, Auburn has chosen a humble approach to our program's storied history — choosing to recognize only Associated Press national championships,' Cohen told On3 for a story announcing the decision Tuesday. 'Starting this fall, we have made the decision to honor the accomplishments of our deserving student-athletes, coaches and teams from Auburn's proud history.
'Our visible national championship recognitions now align with the well-established standard used by the NCAA's official record book and our peers across the nation.'
The Associated Press, which began handing out its annual national championship trophy in 1936, credits Auburn with two titles: 1957 and 2010. Banners recognizing those seasons hang inside Jordan-Hare Stadium.
The other titles Auburn is claiming have varying degrees of validity. For example, the Bowl Championship Series existed in 2004, and the Tigers failed to make the title game. They finished 12-0 and third in the rankings behind undefeated USC and undefeated Oklahoma. Auburn finished second in the AP and the coaches' polls after the Trojans handled the Sooners in the title game.

View more Video Transcript Auburn has officially claimed four more college football national championships, adding 1910, 1914, 1958, and 2004, wild to me. I'll use 2004 as a note because most of us listening and watching don't remember 1910, 1914, and probably 1958. But in 2004 it was a riveting year. I am the old person on this show. Uh, Auburn finished number two that year. They did not play in the BCS championship game, but they finished number two that year, but the number one title went to USC. Uh, that title was vacated by the NCAA because of the Reggie Bush situation, and all of a sudden you end up with Auburn saying, well, we finished number two, therefore we shall claim a title. I'm stunned, Caroline, to see this from a program like Auburn. Um, I actually recently just claimed a Miss America title and an Olympic gold medal. So that is how you may now introduce me every time we open up the show. Thank you so much. It was really so much hard work, and I'm really but that's how silly you sound, Auburn. And that's my biggest thing here: we are talking about Auburn football with a storied history, with a long history of greatness and championships, SEC championships. We are talking about one of the most reputable programs in the entire country. You're better than this. You are better, Auburn, than UCF-ing your way into more national championships. And of course I'm talking about UCF, who just claimed a national championship because they had an undefeated regular season but didn't get into the college football playoffs. Like these are make-believe fairy tale national championships. You don't get to just wake up one day and say, I feel like having four. More national championships today. That's not how this works. Now in 2004, obviously USC had to vacate that national championship. They beat Oklahoma in the national championship that year. But just because that win is vacated does not mean it's up for grabs. It doesn't mean that you can just say all of a sudden you want it. Uh, look, at the end of the day, Auburn has made themselves a laughingstock right now and if you're an Auburn fan, you can't even fight that. Like now you're in the same conversation as UCF. Good God. Like this is not, you can't give yourself a nickname in life. You, you're not allowed to give yourself a nickname. You can't walk into a gym, tell everybody, hey, I haven't decided what like people have to give you a nickname. You also can't give yourself a national championship. There is a process here if they really think because the title was vacated, that they should be named the champion, then I think they should go to the NCAA and see if the NCAA wanted to name them. If the NCAA had come out and said, you know what, because of the vacation of the 2004 national championship, we're going to, we're going to now give that to Auburn. Like in the Olympics, if somebody loses a gold, they have the right to go out and then give that gold to the silver. They could, they could do all these things. Fine. If the NCAA come out yesterday and said we're giving Auburn the 2004 NCAA championship, we would have laughed, but we would have laughed at the NCAA. Instead, we're laughing at Auburn, and this is the sort of thing you don't do when you're a serious. Close

Auburn quarterback Jackson Arnold named to Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list
Jackson Arnold has been added to another preseason watch list. The 2025 Auburn Tigers have the talent to be a good team this season. This is especially the case when it comes to the offensive side of the football. Hugh Freeze and staff have assembled one of the best groups of receivers in college football. Additionally, the offensive line should be much better than it has been all season. With that said, the success of this offense will largely depend on quarterback Jackson Arnold. He does not have to be great, but just good, for this team to be successful. The talent is there for Arnold to succeed. That is why he has been named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list. This is an award given to the best offensive player in college football. It is also tied to being from the state of Texas. Arnold was one of the best high school football prospects to come out of the state. As part of the 2023 recruiting class, Arnold was rated as the No. 2 player in Texas by 247Sports before committing to Oklahoma. Nationally, he was rated as the No. 4 quarterback and No. 8 player. There was a lot of excitement for Arnold when the 2024 season started for the Sooners. He showed his potential in Oklahoma's Alamo Bowl loss to Arizona. In the 38-24 defeat, he threw for 361 yards and two touchdowns. Last season did not go well for Arnold, but that cannot all be placed on his shoulders. Due to the injuries at wide receiver and the lack of a good offensive line, he struggled. A fresh start at Auburn could result in Arnold showing the potential he had as a Texas high school football player. 2025 Tour Championship picks, odds: Can anybody upset Scottie Scheffler at East Lake?

The 2025 PGA Tour season concludes this weekend at East Lake in Atlanta, Ga., and, if we're being honest, they should just crown Scottie Scheffler the FedEx Cup Champion and save us all the trouble. Scheffler erased a four-stroke deficit Sunday to win the BMW Championship, giving the World No. 1 his fifth win and 15th top-10 finish in 18 starts this season. Those results are historic, but he'll only be crowned as this season's champion if he can win this week's Tour Championship. In previous formats, Scheffler would start the Tour Championship at 10-under par, but the powers that be have decided to do away with starting strokes and put all 30 players on even par for the 2025 iteration. Not only does that level the playing field, but it also makes this tournament a lot more fun for bettors, who, like casual fans, were pretty tired of the old format. 3 Scottie Scheffler after winning the BMW Championship. AP Even without the head start, Scheffler is a whopping +150 favorite at DraftKings, well ahead of Rory McIlroy (+850), Tommy Fleetwood (14/1), Ludvig Aberg (18/1) and Russell Henley (20/1). Despite his Tiger-esque odds, you can feel pretty confident that Scheffler will be the most popular bet behind the window this week – and don't let me stand in your way if that's your speed – but we'll pick out a few long shots who look like they're primed to make some noise in the curtain-closer. 3 Harry Hall has been one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour in 2025. AP 2025 Tour Championship picks Harry Hall (55/1, bet365) If you're a regular reader of our Wednesday golf picks, you probably saw this one coming. We've been on Harry Hall the past two weeks, hoping to cash in on the Englishman's terrific, yet unheralded, form. It hasn't worked out just yet, but Hall was right around it once again at the BMW Championship, finishing sixth for his fifth top-10 finish on the season. The 28-year-old has been remarkably consistent to close out 2025, posting 11 straight top-30 finishes with eight top-20s in that span. According to Justin Ray of the Twenty-First Group, Hall ranks first in strokes gained: putting, third in scoring average and fourth in birdie-or-better rate since May 1. He's doing everything but winning right now. That said, Lowry finished T23 at the BMW Championship and showed signs of life Sunday. Known to do his best work on the biggest stages, Lowry's talent means he's always worth a look at this kind of price. 3 Sungjae Im teeing off at the BMW Championship. Getty Images Sungjae Im (90/1, Caesars) Like Hall, Sungjae Im has been a regular feature in this column to no avail, yet. Like Lowry, this is a buy-low opportunity on a player with the talent to disrupt this field. It may be a surprise that Im even qualified for this event, but his T17 at the St. Jude two weeks ago was enough to vault him into East Lake in what has otherwise been a down year. The South Korean has missed four cuts and posted just two top-30 finishes in his last 10 starts, but he has popped at different times this year. He came out of the gates strong with two top-five results in his first three starts, and he was T5 at Augusta in April. Im also has some strong history at East Lake with a runner-up in 2022 and a sixth-place finish last year.
