ASEAN Higher Education Ministers' Roundtable in Langkawi on June 19
PUTRAJAYA: The ASEAN Higher Education Ministers' Roundtable: Envisioning the Next Decade and Beyond will be held in Langkawi on June 19, and is expected to outline a new direction for regional higher education, said Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.
He said the roundtable would be one of the main events under the ASEAN Ministers of Education and Higher Education Roundtables (#EduRoundtables2025) and Events, which will take place on the resort island from June 17 to 19.
'This event will see the participation of education and higher education ministers from ASEAN member states and Timor Leste, as well as senior representatives from Myanmar and the ASEAN Secretariat,' he said during a briefing with editors-in-chief at the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) here today.
He said one of the key outcomes of the meeting would be the ASEAN Leaders' Declaration on Higher Education: Towards an Inclusive, Sustainable and Prosperous ASEAN, which would serve as a foundational document or new blueprint to strengthen higher education in the region over the next decade.
Zambry said the new declaration would renew and reinforce the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on Higher Education adopted at the 27th ASEAN Summit on Nov 21, 2015.
He added that the ASEAN Senior Officials' Meeting on Education (SOM-ED) held on Feb 14 had also endorsed the implementation of the ASEAN Global Exchange Mobility and Scholarship (ASEAN-GEMS) initiative proposed by Malaysia through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS).
'This proposal involves the implementation of an Intra-ASEAN Scholarship Programme that facilitates smoother student exchanges among ASEAN countries, free from mobility restrictions, while also providing students with exposure to diplomacy and culture,' he said.
Zambry also noted that the 8th Meeting of the ASEAN Working Group on Higher Education Mobility (AWGHEM) had agreed to place both initiatives on the main agenda of the upcoming roundtable in Langkawi.
Separately, he said that in conjunction with the MADANI Rakyat 2025 programme to be held at Lumut Waterfront, Perak, from June 13 to 15, with the theme Higher Education as the Driver of a MADANI Nation, the ministry will highlight the role of higher education in advancing the MADANI national agenda.
The programme is scheduled to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and will feature various activities involving universities, polytechnics and community colleges.
Commenting on Malaysia's role as ASEAN Chair this year, Zambry said MOHE had taken a strategic approach by convening two ministerial meetings — one involving education ministers and the other focusing specifically on higher education.
'In this engagement, we want Malaysia to be the heart of ASEAN higher education excellence by strengthening regional collaboration, including through the empowerment of teaching personnel in areas such as artificial intelligence and the latest technologies,' he said.

She said the current administration has moved at an unprecedented pace in laying the groundwork for institutional and legislative reforms, setting a benchmark not seen under previous governments. Azalina said the legal affairs division of the Prime Minister's Department, together with other agencies under her purview, had made significant progress in implementing reforms in a structured and comprehensive manner. This included the successful reinstatement of the Parliamentary Services Act 2025, and the implementation of more than 30 legislative amendments since 2023. 'This shows that the government's reform efforts are not mere rhetoric. 'This is clear evidence that the Madani government's reform agenda is in motion and being implemented. 'As policymakers, our duty is to ensure that every reform initiative is not only ambitious but, more importantly, feasible and beneficial to the Malaysian public,' she said. Azalina said the legal affairs division had launched the PetaRI portal, a dedicated online platform to provide the public with regular updates on the progress of government reform initiatives. 'Whether we like it or not, we must acknowledge that the Madani government has laid the foundation for reform at a pace unmatched by previous administrations. 'The proof lies in the institutional changes and legal updates that the public can assess for themselves,' she said.

JAKARTA, June 11 (Xinhua) -- As the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) advances its economic integration efforts, Indonesian economist Syafruddin Karimi of Andalas University said the region's ambition to become the world's fourth-largest economy is within reach. "ASEAN is currently entering a pivotal phase in its economic integration project," said Syafruddin in a recent interview with Xinhua. "With the spirit of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration adopted at the 46th ASEAN Summit, the region has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening intra-regional cooperation and accelerating progress toward comprehensive economic integration." He emphasized that ASEAN has made "significant progress in recent years, particularly in the harmonization of trade standards, the acceleration of physical and digital connectivity, and advancements within free trade frameworks such as the ASEAN Free Trade Area and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership." "Efforts to promote labor mobility and regional supply chain integration continue, although they still face structural obstacles," he noted. According to him, ASEAN's goal to become the world's fourth-largest economy is theoretically attainable due to its demographic projections, strategic geographic positioning, and the vast potential of domestic markets. However, realizing this ambition will depend heavily on consistent structural reforms, political stability, and the collective capacity of member states to create a policy ecosystem that supports investment and innovation. Vertical schools in housing projects to help reduce transport costs, says PM Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR: The integration of a vertical school concept within the Rumah Bakat Madani housing project in Penang is expected to enhance student safety and ease the transportation cost burden on families, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said that incorporating educational elements into residential development is part of the Madani government's initiative to build compassionate neighbourhoods and foster community development based on Madani values. Anwar said this approach underscores the government's commitment to promoting holistic well-being for the people, rather than focusing solely on physical structures and architectural design. "The planned vertical school element, integrated with the housing project, aims to ensure student safety, and I believe it can also help families save on transportation costs,' he said in a Facebook post on Wednesday (June 11). He also stressed that the Madani government placed strong emphasis on expediting project approvals through collaboration across ministries, agencies and with the involvement of state governments. Anwar said the project was an initiative involving private developer SkyWorld, aimed at enabling low- and middle-income groups to own affordable homes. "I was informed that the development will also include essential infrastructure and comprehensive facilities such as schools and childcare centres, surau, commercial spaces, as well as landscaped areas and parks,' he said.
