Airline adds more flights between Edinburgh and Orlando

An ultra-rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging hub – which will be operational on a 24/7 basis – has officially opened next to a cinema in Renfrewshire. Osprey Charging has developed land in Saturn Avenue in the area of Phoenix Retail Park into a state-of-the-art facility catering for cars, vans and taxis. The company has designed a space with 16 300kW charge points, a flow-through layout and pedestrian walkways in the vicinity of the Showcase Cinema de Lux, Marmalade Pot pub and McDonald's fast food restaurant. Ian Johnston, CEO of Osprey Charging, said: "We're proud of this carefully designed site located in Paisley at the heart of a busy retail area. "By purchasing the land we were able to create a bespoke layout specifically for EV charging that maximises space and accessibility. "The hub's 16 super-fast, super-reliable charge points are the new normal for Osprey – and we're building these large convenient hubs all over Great Britain." Osprey Charging was granted planning permission by Renfrewshire Council for the project in September 2023. The local authority explained in a report on the decision at the time: "The charging hub would be located on a vacant site within an existing commercial centre so would contribute to the development of the wider centre. "The development could be easily accommodated at the site, would not look out of place and would reflect the form and use of the wider area." The hub is accessible from the east and west-bound carriageways of the A737, less than five minutes from the M8 and under 10 minutes from Glasgow Airport. Scottish Government transport secretary Fiona Hyslop visited to open the facility last week. She said: "I'm delighted to open Osprey's new ultra-rapid charging hub near Glasgow Airport – now the largest 24/7 public electric vehicle charging site in Scotland. "Not only is this sort of private sector investment exactly what we need to see to support our vision for public EV charging, it's in a prime location offering high-powered EV charging to fleets, taxis and everyday drivers travelling around Glasgow and to and from the airport."

Plus, what you need to know about flight compensation rules GROUNDED Major strike action to hit 12 Spanish airports that have Ryanair flights BRITS heading to Spain this month are being warned of chaos as baggage handlers are to strike at 12 Spanish airports. More than 3,000 workers are set to strike between August 15 and 17 and then will continue to strike every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at a number of Spanish airports. 2 Strikes are expected to hit 12 Spanish airport and impact Ryanair Credit: Alamy The strikes are set to continue through to the end of December. The protests are "against the sanctions imposed on workers and the abuse of hours". The FeSMC-UGT airline sector is requesting mediation before the Interconfederal Mediation and Arbitration Service (SIMA). According to the union, the strikes are being called for various reasons including a lack of stable job creation, restrictions on medical leave and the consolidation of part-time staff's working hours. "UGT regrets having to go to these extremes and all the damages that may occur, for which the direct responsibility will be solely and exclusively the company and its reckless action with the workforce," the union commented. Jose Manuel Perez Grande, federal secretary of the FeSMC-UGT Air Union, claimed Azul Handling has "a strategy of precariousness and pressure on the workforce that violates basic labour rights and systematically ignores union demands". Flight cancelled or delayed? Top tips for handling travel disruptions The FeSMC-UGT Air Sector is now demanding that the company withdraw the sanctions, comply with the opinions of the Joint Commission and immediately open a real negotiation process. This would improve the working conditions of the more than 3,000 workers affected. A number of baggage handlers also went on strike at several Spanish airports for the same reasons last year. A Ryanair spokesperson told The Sun Travel: "Ryanair does not expect any disruption to our operation as a result of these third-party handling strikes in Spain." Back in June, Ryanair also revealed Europe's worst air traffic control centres (ATCs) for delays. This included 1,642 of the airlines' flights to/from the UK being delayed, impacting nearly 300,000 British passengers. Ryanair commented that the European Commission and European governments "have taken no action to fix their shoddy ATC services and ATC delays will now be even worse in summer 2025". Micheal O'Leary, the airline's CEO, added that if staff shortages and ATC issues are not sorted, there will be "record ATC flight delays this summer". Flight compensation rules A look at your rights if a flight is delayed or cancelled, when your entitled to compensation and if your travel insurance can cover the costs. What are my rights if my flight is cancelled or delayed? Under UK law, airlines have to provide compensation if your flight arrives at its destination more than three hours late. If you're flying to or from the UK, your airline must let you choose a refund or an alternative flight. You will be able to get your money back for the part of your ticket that you haven't used yet. So if you booked a return flight and the outbound leg is cancelled, you can get the full cost of the return ticket refunded. But if travelling is essential, then your airline has to find you an alternative flight. This could even be with another airline. When am I not entitled to compensation? The airline doesn't have to give you a refund if the flight was cancelled due to reasons beyond their control, such as extreme weather. Disruptions caused by things like extreme weather, airport or air traffic control employee strikes or other 'extraordinary circumstances' are not eligible for compensation. Some airlines may stretch the definition of "extraordinary circumstances" but you can challenge them through the aviation regulator the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Will my insurance cover me if my flight is cancelled? If you can't claim compensation directly through the airline, your travel insurance may refund you. Policies vary so you should check the small print, but a delay of eight to 12 hours will normally mean you qualify for some money from your insurer. Remember to get written confirmation of your delay from the airport as your insurer will need proof. If your flight is cancelled entirely, you're unlikely to be covered by your insurance. The HotelPlanner Tour trio are teeing up on the DP World Tour this week, having opted to play in the Nexo Championship, which is being held at Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen, as opposed to the Irish Challenge at Killeen Castle in Co Meath. Location is a big factor this week Now more than ever, though, players are aware that even taking a single week off from the bread and butter of the ultra-competitive HotelPlanner Tour might come back to haunt them when those coveted 20 DP World Tour cards are handed out in Mallorca at the end of the season. One of the reasons why Law, Young and Walker have decided on a change of environment this week is that it's an assignment on Scottish soil, a ground-breaking one, too, as the Old Course at Trump International Golf Links stages a DP World Tour event for the first time. In the case of Law and Young, they will also be teeing up in the knowledge that they have both effectively secured top-tour tickets for 2026. On the back of a win in the D+D REAL Czech Challenge last month, Law sits fourth on the Road to Mallorca Rankings, with Young is up to sixth after his maiden title triumph in the Farmfoods Scottish Challenge supported by The R&A at Schloss Roxburghe in the Borders on Sunday. 'I've got myself in a nice position on the HotelPlanner Tour and I'll be teeing up with the same expectations I had last week, to be honest. 'My game is good and I was up playing the course with Davy (Law) a week past Friday. I've played it a good few times over the years and it suits my game as you've got to be strong off the tee. It will just be interesting to see how they set it up as it can get pretty blustery up there.' It can, indeed, as the players competing in last week's Staysure PGA Seniors Championship discovered, with only winner Bo Van Pelt and runner-up Darren Fichardt ending a challenging four days in red figures and that was despite a number of the tees being moved forward in one of the rounds. 'I probably need one more good result' Walker, who will be getting his first look at the Martin Hawtree-designed course, sits 14th on the HotelPlanner Tour points list after finishing third behind Young at Schloss Roxburghe. Three years in a row, he narrowly missed out on securing a step up after heading into the Grand Final sitting around 20th and is determined to be closer to the top ten on this occasion. 'I probably need one more good result like the one last week. If not that, then I need to be consistent for the rest of the season and I've been consistent (as evidenced by by making the cut in 15 of his 17 starts) so far.' It would be correct to say that Young took time to find his feet on the second-tier tour, finishing 173rd in the rankings in 2021 then 77th and 100th the next two years. There were clear signs, though, that he was starting to make headway as he made it to the Grand Final for the first time last season and his weekend win came after finishing third and second in his previous two starts. Seeing different places, being in an airport every week. It's not easy and you've got to get used to that. 'The standard out here gets better every year. There are so many good players. Young guys starting out and guys coming back off the DP World Tour. So to have had the run of events that I've just had is obviously very satisfying.'
