MK party could alienate voters over Shivambu's ties to Bushiri, expert warns
Despite condemnation from the South African government, Shivambu recently defended his association with fugitive Bushiri.
A political analyst has warned that the 'puzzling' relationship between uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party secretary-general Floyd Shivambu and Shepherd Bushiri may come back to hurt the party.
Shivambu visited Malawi in April, meeting with politicians and Bushiri. During the trip, Shivambu was introduced at the controversial pastor's church as a South African politician, to loud cheers.
Bushiri was arrested in South Africa in 2020 but fled the country soon after. He faces charges of alleged rape, contravention of bail conditions, and forgery.
The self-proclaimed prophet and his wife, Mary, also face fraud charges.
Despite condemnation from the South African government, Shivambu defended his association with fugitive Bushiri again last week.
A stance that may hurt the party at the polls
'Shivambu's visit to Bushiri is rather puzzling given the controversy that surrounds him,' Sanet Solomon from the University of the Free State told The Citizen.
'By associating with Bushiri, Shivambu and his party, by association, could be alienating voters.
'South Africans are facing many challenges related to femicide, rape, corruption and fraud that voters would want to distance themselves from this.'
Despite Bushiri being an influential figure and businessman in Malawi, Solomon said the 'MK party would certainly not benefit from any association with the rogue 'pastor'.'
Shivambu heads to the 'house of the Lord'
Meanwhile, Shivambu said he will not apologise for accepting an offer to go to the 'house of the Lord'.
'One thing I will never apologise for is when I went to see Prophet Shepherd Bushiri, and he said, 'Let's go to church'. I said, 'I will go to church'.
'I am like those who say I am glad when they say, 'Let us go unto the house of the Lord'.'
The MK party distanced itself from the visit at the time, claiming Shivambu had travelled in his personal capacity.

Zuma knew about visit
However, the politician said this week that even party president Jacob Zuma was aware of the trip.
'There is nothing that I do without informing the president. There is no political programme that I engage in without making the president aware.
'There is no decision that I communicate to the membership of MK and externally without the president knowing,' he said.

DNA results confirm the murder of Pretoria journalist
The South African Police Service has confirmed that the remains found in Rust De Winter last month, are of journalist, Aserie Ndlovu and his partner. Ndlovu and his girlfriend went missing on 18 February 2025. The bodies analysed for DNA were discovered by SAPS on 8 May 2025. 'The SAPS can now confirm that a DNA analysis has been concluded and has positively linked the remains to that of Aserie Ndlovu and Zodwa Mdhluli', said national police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe. Mathe said the remains found were analysed and matched against samples taken from biological relatives of both Ndlovu and Mdhluli. SAPS has notified both families of the positive DNA match. The families have also been told that the results confirm that the remains found are of the missing couple. Mathe said the police were pleased to assist both families in finding closure. While the families come to terms with this new development, the case of the suspected killers of Ndlovu and Mdhluli continues before the KwaMhlanga Magistrate's Court. Seven suspects were arrested on 4 May 2025, over two months since the couple had been missing. The seven were charged with kidnapping, house robbery and possession of stolen property. Last month, a cross province operation involving Gauteng and Mpumalanga police led SAPS to the seven suspects. They were questioned and subsequently arrested. 'The first suspect who is arrested, is according to investigations, the last to be in the company of the missing couple', said Mathe. 'The second, third and fourth suspects that have been arrested were found with different vehicle parts believed to be that of the missing journalist', she continued. Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola has previously attributed the police successfully apprehending the suspects, to public participation. 'The social media community must also be appreciated for sharing the pictures of these suspects far and wide. Dept of Social Development wants SRD grant extended beyond March 2026
CAPE TOWN - The Department of Social Development wants the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant to be extended beyond March 2026, despite Treasury's intentions to stop the welfare initiative. The department said this was necessary while it finalised the basic income grant policy, which has been reviewed again by the department, despite frustrations from members of Parliament (MPs). The basic income grant policy has been in the making for several years and aims to provide monthly financial support to citizens who qualify. The Department of Social Development told Parliament that the policy was still in the making, and it could be a year before legislation on the policy was developed. Deputy Director-General Brenda Sibeko said until such time that the basic income grant policy was finalised, the SRD grant must be extended beyond March 2026. "So, we will also, in the process of doing the legislation, need the SRD grant to continue. So, in that regard, we will ask Treasury again to extend the SRD so that there isn't a break in that income support while the policy process is underway." She said the policy would also link beneficiaries with economic opportunities so that they did not just rely on the basic income grant.

Bushiris accuse witness who testified against them in extradition matter of hearsay
JOHANNESBURG - Self-proclaimed prophet, Shepherd Bushiri, and his wife, Mary, have accused the State witness who testified against them in their extradition matter of providing hearsay evidence. Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Advocate Sibongile Mzinyathi took to the stand to testify against the two. In March, the couple was ordered to return to South Africa after they fled to Malawi in 2020, violating their bail conditions. But the Bushiris are now challenging this before the High Court in Lilongwe. In papers before the High Court in Lilongwe, Shepherd and Mary submitted that the State's only witness, Mzinyathi, gave hearsay evidence that was inadmissible in common law countries such as Malawi. They argued that Mzinyathi's reliance on investigators who also relied on the complainants makes the DPP's affidavit a third-hand one. They submitted that the South African government could only blame itself for withdrawing five other investigators as witnesses, as they would have been appropriate to take the stand. Therefore, they argued that Mzinyathi's evidence was inadmissible before the court. On this basis, the Bushiris submitted that South Africa's extradition request must be dismissed.
