Barcelona fans have their say: Atlético Madrid star should be no.1 transfer target

Yahoo21-07-2025
Supporters of La Liga giants Barcelona have weighed in on what they feel the club should be prioritising when it comes to reinforcements to Hansi Flick's squad this summer.
As much has come by way of a survey, carried out by Spanish outlet .
When asked which position in the Blaugrana's ranks is most in need of fresh blood with a view to next season, the majority (42.33%) pointed towards centre-forward.
This of course comes with Robert Lewandowski due to turn 37 next month.
Shifting focus towards specific targets, and the name most frequently pushed by the Barca faithful to fill the striker role in Catalunya's capital is Julián Alvarez.
Atlético Madrid standout Alvarez is understood to be on the radar of those in the Camp Nou boardroom, albeit with a view to the summer of 2026, rather than this.
Following Alvarez with the 2nd most mentions, meanwhile, was Manchester City hitman Erling Haaland.

Portugal star Joao Felix teams up with Cristiano Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia with Al Nassr

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Joao Felix took his total transfer cost to around $260 million Tuesday when completing his latest move — this time to Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr. The Portugal forward has teamed up with compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo, joining from Chelsea for a reported initial fee of 30 million euros ($34.6 million) and signing a two-year contract. 'I'm here to spread joy. Let's win together,' Felix said in a video announcing his arrival, shared on Al Nassr's social media channels. He is the latest star player from Europe to move to Saudi Arabia as part of the kingdom's bid to become a major force in soccer. But his transfer from Club World Cup winner Chelsea is the latest in a long line of moves for a player who holds the record for the fourth most expensive signing in history, but has failed to live up to the expectations placed on him so early in his career. Still only 25, Felix has time to hit the heights he seemed destined for when joining Spanish giant Atletico Madrid from Benfica for $140 million in 2019. But his career has stalled since then with a series of loans to top teams including Chelsea, Barcelona and most recently AC Milan failing to see him establish himself among the very elite. According transfer date website Transfermarkt, Felix is behind only Neymar (222 million euros ($256 million)), Kylian Mbappe (180m euros ($208 million)) and Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele (both 135m euros ($155.8 million)) on the list of highest transfer fees in soccer. His value has dropped significantly — joining Chelsea for a reported $60 million last year, with his fee almost halving again to join Al Nassr. The move to Saudi Arabia is not guaranteed to reignite his career. While some have flourished, including the likes of Ronaldo and Aleksandar Mitrovic, Neymar left after an injury-disrupted time at Al-Hilal and Jordan Henderson and Jhon Duran only stayed for months before moving on. Al Nassr will hope Felix's arrival will see it win the title it has been waiting for since signing Ronaldo in a spectacular move late in 2022. While the Portugal great has helped raise the profile of Saudi Arabian soccer and continued to score at a prolific rate, he has had to watch rivals Al Ittihad (twice) and Al-Hilal crowned champion during his time in the league. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP soccer:

Canada's Tajon Buchanan joins Villarreal in permanent transfer from Inter

Tajon Buchanan has joined Villarreal in a permanent move from Inter. The 26-year-old has signed a five-year contract at the Spanish club after spending the second half of 2024-25 on loan, scoring once in 13 appearances. Buchanan started only once for Inter in the first half of last season after suffering a broken leg during a Canada training session in July. He joined Villarreal on loan in January, making four starts in the second half of last term and finishing the campaign strongly with a late winner at La Liga champions Barcelona — his only goal for the club — in the penultimate game of the season and an assist against Sevilla on the final day. El Villarreal y el @Inter han alcanzado un acuerdo de traspaso por Tajon Buchanan, que firma con la entidad amarilla hasta el año 2030. Benvingut, Tajon 💛! — Villarreal CF (@VillarrealCF) July 29, 2025 Buchanan signed for Inter from Club Brugge in a deal worth an initial €7million (£6m; $7.7m) plus add-ons in January 2024 but did not start a game for the Italian club that season, featuring 10 times as a substitute as they won the Serie A title. Buchanan, who was the first ever Canadian to play in Italy's top flight, previously played 67 times for Club Brugge after arriving in January 2022. The versatile wide player has made 51 appearances for the Canada men's national team, including starting all three of their group games at the 2022 World Cup. ()

Houston ace Framber Valdez criticizes defensive shift in Astros' loss to Nationals

HOUSTON — Houston ace Framber Valdez expressed frustration about the defensive positioning on a play in the sixth inning that led to the only run he allowed in the Astros' 2-1 loss to the Washington Nationals. There were two outs in the sixth when Valdez walked Josh Bell. Nathaniel Lowe's groundball double to the right field corner scored Bell and tied the game at 1. Valdez wasn't happy that right fielder Taylor Trammell was shifted halfway to center field instead of in right field on the play. 'I saw the right fielder playing center field and, you know, we have a center fielder for that,' Valdez told reporters in Spanish through a translator. 'I feel like the right fielder should have been playing right field. I was uncomfortable with that.' Valdez was asked if he addressed the positioning with the coaching staff. 'I don't have to ask the coaches about that,' he said. 'I feel like baseball is a game of common sense. With me as a lefty pitcher, they don't hit a lot of fly balls against me.' Valdez allowed three hits and a run while tying a season high with 12 strikeouts in six innings to become the 10th pitcher in franchise history to reach 1,000 career strikeouts (1,007). Riley Adams hit a solo homer in the seventh inning to give Washington the win and extend Houston's skid to a season-high five games.
