‘Keep being kind': Kansas City bartender's act of kindness saves woman's life
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A local bartender named Heath is touted for saving a woman's life.
'I said 'what happened?' He said 'a woman came in, she was stressed, and I was nice,'' Colleen Kelly, co-owner of Kelly's Westport Inn, told FOX4.
In a message written on her receipt, the woman thanked Heath for saving her life – all because he was kind.
'I'd like to think it's this trickle-down effect,' Kelly said. 'If we treat them well, and they treat each other well, and they treat the customers well…hopefully that customer treats somebody else well.'
Kelly said she's worked for the business for 17 years.
'But my family has been here for almost 80 years, and we really have lasted because of the incredible staff,' she said. 'We are really a place for everybody.'
Storm damage reported across the Kansas City metro
The business first started in 1947, under a different name (Westport Inn), but it quickly grew to the likeness of Colleen Kelly's grandfather, she says, who it was soon named after.
'My grandfather started here in 1947,' she said. 'He became an owner the same year.'
Last week, Colleen Kelly took to social media to share an experience between a stranger and a staff member of hers.
'Keep being kind folks,' Kelly said in the Facebook post. 'Ya just never know…'
She said the post has received a lot of positive feedback.
'Tons of comments and just a lot of people reminding other people something really small can be something huge for someone else,' she said. 'There's a lot of negativity out there; there are days that it can feel overwhelming. Maybe sometimes just go to your local pub and put down your phone and have a conversation with somebody.'
She also said, since the post hit the internet, customers and former employees of the bar have shared with her their experiences, too, about meaningful conversations they've had and their lasting impacts.
'This isn't just happening at Kelly's; this is all over,' she told FOX4.
Kelly said she plans on framing the receipt behind the bar.
To the woman who wrote 'your kindness saved my life thank you' on the delicate sheet of paper, Kelly wants you to know:
'We are really glad you are alive.'

Saint Louis Zoo welcomes cheetah cub quintuplets
ST. LOUIS – The Saint Louis Zoo welcomed its newest animals last month. Five cheetah cubs were born on May 5 at the River's Edge Cheetah Breeding Center. The litter comes from the zoo's cheetahs Cora, 4, and Vader, 8. According to the Saint Louis Zoo, this is their first successful cheetah cub litter in seven years. They're nicknamed 'Cora's Quints.' Raising cheetah cubs is 'critical' in the first few months of their life, and they will stay out of the public eye for some time to bond with their mother. Care teams are monitoring each one via camera inside the den, but they say Cora has been an attentive mom. 'Each recommended cheetah birth is significant for the survival of this vulnerable species. Our dedicated Animal Care teams have been instrumental in these successful births from the pairing and introductions of Cora and Vader to the family's dietary needs, hormonal analysis for pregnancy monitoring, veterinary care, preparing a maternal den and so much more,' Julie Hartell-DeNardo, Kevin Beckmann Curator of Carnivores at Saint Louis Zoo, said in the release. Within the next few weeks, the cubs will receive their first vet checkup, which is where the doctors will learn the sex of each cub and name them. Cora and Vader, who arrived to the zoo last year, were paired together by recommendation from the AZA Cheetah Species Survival Plan. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 'Martha Stewart aesthetic' is the trend of the summer, according to Pinterest report
It's been 49 years since Martha Stewart left Wall Street, and the lifestyle maven is as influential as ever. According to the 2025 Pinterest Summer Report, the 'Martha Stewart aesthetic' is poised to take over, with searches up 2,889 per cent on the platform. From her vegetable garden (+72 per cent) to dinner recipes (+45 per cent) and chicken coop (+22 per cent), Stewart continues to inspire. 'It's going to be a Martha Girl Summer,' the Martha Stewart Instagram account posted. 'As we've seen, our founder is influencing the influencers, with many embracing her iconic lifestyle by throwing dinner parties, cultivating home-grown produce and raising backyard chickens.' The nearly three-thousand-fold increase includes Stewart-specific search terms, such as 'Martha Stewart chicken coop,' and more general ones that Pinterest attributes to her sway, including 'fresh summer recipes.' Stewart's estate in Bedford, New York, spans 153 acres. When she bought it in 2000, it was 'a blank canvas,' according to a Facebook post. Today, it's filled with rose beds, daffodils, orchards, vegetable plots and a greenhouse dedicated to begonias. 'My father taught me that you can do it all from scratch, starting from seeds or cuttings, and if you nurture them, they will produce,' she said. 'For me, gardening is all about scent, colour, and variety, variety, and more variety.' In the spirit of Stewart's DIY philosophy, Pinterest users are gravitating toward harvest recipes (+680 per cent), urban farming (+374 per cent), flower gardens (+259 per cent), small backyard vegetable gardens (+246 per cent) and garden-to-table cooking (+117 per cent). 'This back-to-basics approach not only fosters a reconnection to nature but also pairs seamlessly with the rise of summer detox drinks, with searches up 566 per cent on Pinterest,' according to the report. As people have started drinking less alcohol, especially young adults, functional beverages have filled the gap. These drinks, particularly popular among millennials and Gen Z, are designed to deliver health benefits beyond hydration and may be infused with herbs, vitamins and minerals, protein or CBD. Green juices for gut health (+316 per cent) — which Stewart drinks every morning — flavoured water drinks (+289 per cent), spinach smoothies that taste good (+227 per cent), anti-inflammatory drinks (+289 per cent) and herbal infusion recipes (+71 per cent) are among the summer detox drinks quenching Pinterest users' thirst. Whether low-alcohol, non-alcoholic or boozy, 'The popularity of savoury cocktails reflects a curiosity for innovative beverage experiences, marrying fresh produce and herbs with creative cocktail concoctions for a refreshing twist on traditional summer sips.'
