Next year, though, IPL has to take a back seat to the World Twenty20 Cup that will be hosted by India and Sri Lanka in February and March. After the thrills and spills of this 20-team tournament that will also include Canada, the passionate fans will turn their attention from rooting for their country to cheering their provincial or city clubs.

With its growing power on the international sporting scene, especially cricket, it appears India calls all the shots.

One country that has felt the full brunt of India's clout has been Pakistan. Pakistani players featured in the IPL's inaugural season in 2008 and then later that year 10 insurgents from Pakistan stormed Mumbai and some 166 people lost their lives. Since then, Pakistanis have been blackballed by the IPL and the two national teams have not played a bilateral Test series. The only time they face each other is in International Cricket Council-organized tournaments such as the World Cups.

Unfortunately, some of the countries competing in next year's World T20 Cup will find themselves targeted if they have any ties with Pakistan. Two of Canada's star players — all-rounder Saad Bin Zafar and fast bowler Kaleem Sana, both born in Pakistan — are expected to make their mark in the tournament in 2026 — that's if the Indian authorities allow them into the country.

Making life difficult for Pakistani-born players isn't something new.

In 2010, I brought it to the attention of then Canadian immigration minister Jason Kenney that one of our top all-rounders Rizwan Cheema had not been granted a visa to play in the World Cup (50 overs) hosted by India. Kenney used his influence to get India to reverse its stand on Cheema.

Others who have had to clear hurdles before being granted visas included England's Saqib Mahmood, and in 2024 Test spinner Shoaib Bashir. The British government then intervened, but because of the red tape the spinner missed the first Test. 'We absolutely expect India to treat British citizens fairly at all times in its visa process,' said a British government communique. The other top-rated player who had a similar experience was Australia opening batsman Usman Khawaja, also because of his Pakistani heritage.

Bin Zafar and Sana were in brilliant form with the ball in piloting Canada to the World Cup finals in the sub-continent after also impressing during Canada's first appearance in this version of the competition in the U.S. and the Caribbean in 2024 where Zafar earned the honour of captaining Canada. Sana is an experienced player, having played top-notch club cricket for Pakistan Customs and also representing Pakistan in the Under-19 World Cup.

McIntosh races for a fourth straight gold in Singapore in Saturday's 800-metre freestyle. It could be the Canadian's toughest challenge yet as McIntosh needs to beat reigning Olympic champion and world-record holder Ledecky for another gold. McIntosh posted the third-fastest time in Friday's heats at eight minutes 19.88 seconds behind Ledecky (8:14.62) and Lanni Pallister of Australia (8:17.06). McIntosh and Ledecky will race in lanes beside each other in the final scheduled for 8:17 a.m. ET. 'Any time I get to race Katie, whether it's in the 800, which I haven't done in a while or the 400 or any event really, any time we get a matchup it's lots of fun,' said McIntosh. 'She pushes me to reach bigger goals, so I'm really excited to race her tomorrow night.' The 18-year-old from Toronto beat Ledecky in the 400-metre freestyle on opening day for the first of her three gold medals, which is the most by a Canadian at a world championship. McIntosh was also victorious in the 200-metre individual medley and 200-metre butterfly. Her stated goal for Singapore was five wins in her five individual races -- the 400 individual medley is Sunday -- which is a feat only U.S. great Michael Phelps has achieved at a single world championship. Ledecky is the only woman to win four gold medals at a long-course world championship, which she did in 2015 in Kazan, Russia. Also Friday, Toronto's Josh Liendo and Montreal's Ilya Kharun booked spots in the men's 100-metre butterfly final Saturday. The two shared the Olympic podium in Paris last year, with Liendo taking silver and Kharun the bronze. Liendo turned in the second-fastest time in the semifinals of 50.24 seconds, while Kharun was fourth in 50.39. Saskatoon's Tierney finished fourth in the men's 200-metre backstroke in 1:55.09, which was just under half a second short of a medal. 'This is my first time ever making a semi, let alone a final, in the 200 back,' Tierney said. The 23-year-old broke the Canadian record twice -- in the heats (1:55.17) and again in the semifinal (1:55.03) -- to qualify for the final. 'The plan was really just to treat each swim like it was my only swim, so if I didn't make a semi or final, I'd be able to walk with my head high,' Tierney said. 'It was a little more taxing than maybe some of the other guys who maybe cruised some in the morning. But three 1:55s, I'm pretty happy with that.' Hungary's Hubert Kos won gold in 1:53.19, followed by South Africa's Pieter Coetze (1:53.36) and France's Yohann Ndoye-Brouard (1:54.62). Canada has won six medals at the world aquatics championships -- five in swimming and one in high diving. UAE to host cricket tri-series ahead of T20 World Cup
ISLAMABAD (AP) — The United Arab Emirates will host a Twenty20 tri-series including Afghanistan and Pakistan later this month as part of the teams' buildup for next year's T20 World Cup. Sharjah will host all seven games of the tri-series, starting Aug. 29. Teams play against each other twice before the top two qualify for the final. Pakistan and Afghanistan have already secured direct qualification for the T20 World Cup to be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. UAE could also qualify but it has to play ICC's Asia-East Asia and Pacific qualifiers in Oman in October. Afghanistan, which finished seventh in the last T20 World Cup, hasn't played a T20 since a bilateral series against Zimbabwe late last year. Pakistan is currently playing a T20 series against West Indies in the United States. The tri-series will be followed by the Asia Cup, also scheduled to be held in the UAE, from Sept. 9 when Afghanistan takes on Hong Kong in the opening game. ___ AP cricket:
