Siraj strikes for India as England's Brook rides his luck in Oval thriller
England were 164-3 at lunch on the fourth day, still needing a further 210 runs to reach a huge victory target of 374 that would give them a 3-1 series win.
Joe Root, the world's top-ranked Test batsman, was 23 not out, with Yorkshire teammate Brook riding his luck during an unbeaten 38 featuring four fours and two sixes.
Brook struck 27 runs in the space of eight balls, having come in with England 106-3 after Siraj had stand-in England captain Ollie Pope lbw for 27.

The talented Brook charged down the pitch to loft Akash Deep for an extraordinary six over cover despite heavy cloud cover in London favouring India's quicks.
But he almost holed out to fine leg off Prasidh Krishna only for Siraj, right back on the boundary, unable to stop himself taking a pace backwards when completing the catch. By stepping onto the rope, Siraj transformed a dismissal into another six.
England resumed on 50-1 after Siraj yorked Zak Crawley with the last ball of Saturday's play.
Ben Duckett was 34 not out and Pope, leading England in place of the injured Ben Stokes, yet to face.
Left-hander Duckett was repeatedly beaten by fast bowler Siraj, who has appeared in every match of a gruelling series.
He continued to fend outside off stump and it was no surprise when he fell for 54 after edging an intended drive off Krishna to second slip, with KL Rahul holding a sharp catch to leave England 82-2.
But Pope hit three fours in one Krishna over with an on-drive followed by a clip through midwicket and a forceful pull.
Siraj, however, had Pope plumb lbw for 27 with a ball that kept a touch low and nipped back.
Siraj's 20th wicket of the series made him the leading bowler on either side.
India posted 396 in their second innings on Saturday. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal made a sparkling 118 and Washington Sundar smashed a quickfire 53 late in the day.
History is against the hosts as no side have made more to win in the fourth innings of a Test at the Oval than England's 263 in a one-wicket victory over Australia in 1902.
But England chased down 371 for a five-wicket win in the opener at Headingley.

Next Stay Close ✕ The 29-year-old told the media on Wednesday that, whether he opens with 19-year-old Lhuan-dré Pretorius or Aiden Markram, he will not change his natural brand of cricket, as it fits the vision of the current T20 side. 'I can honestly say I'm still trying to establish myself in the T20 side. From my own personal point of view, luckily enough, there is experience around me within T20Is, such as Aiden and Rassie,' said Rickelton. 'I don't think there'll be any expectation for me to change anything in what I've been doing these last two years. It's just an opportunity for me to hopefully claim that opening spot for the South African side going into the T20 World Cup and beyond. 'So, definitely not trying to change the way I play. I think the way the team is structured, it fits the mould and how they want me to play, too. "So, pretty comfortable with what's required. Always looking to take or make that first punch and get the side off to a good start, no matter who's alongside me at the top.' The Proteas will face Australia for the first time since they beat them at Lord's in the World Test Championship final in June. Rickelton said the squad takes confidence from that result, despite the change in format. 'It is a different format, but I think the Lord's victory instilled belief not just within the group, but within the wider cricketing community in South Africa. It definitely gives us confidence that we can do these things we speak about and dream about,' he said. 'It's a different format, a crazy format — anything can happen, and the game can change in the space of a few deliveries. 'So, we're looking forward to trying to take momentum from a few months ago, especially with the guys coming back as well, and trying to win a series here in Australia.' Rickelton, alongside Kagiso Rabada, Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs, returns to action for the first time since the WTC final, after being rested for the tour to Zimbabwe. The southpaw revealed that, while they may not have understood the reason for the break at first, they now feel refreshed and hungry to return. 'It's been a few of us who've been on the road for quite a period of time, and before the break comes, you might not really be looking forward to it or understand the need for it. But I think, looking back now, it was really beneficial to me,' said Rickelton. 'I chatted to the guys who've been on break — Aiden, Tristan, Marco, KG — they look really chuffed with life. KG's raring to go again. Aiden looks like he's got that spark in his eye again. He's keen to get going as well. 'So, it's important to just have that switch-off. The exposure you have to cricket can be a little bit too much sometimes. So, to be able to step out is quite nice. 'And if you look at the rest of the year, all the way through to the end of the IPL next year, it's pretty packed — not just for the five of us, but for the collective group as well. 'So it's important to have that break, and the five of us are very chuffed with it. I'm very chuffed with it. And like I said, we're happy to be back and really ready to go.' Test title gives Proteas confidence ahead of T20 series against Australia
Some key players have returned to the Proteas squad after being rested since the World Test Championship final in June. They will be playing a different format, but top-order batter Ryan Rickelton says the Proteas will have more confidence going into their T20 series against Australia after beating the Baggy Greens to win the world Test title a couple of months ago. The SA team defeated Australia by five wickets in the World Test Championship final in London in June. And while the Proteas went on to win their two-Test series against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, and lost three of their five games in the T20 International tri-series against New Zealand and Zimbabwe in Harare, some key players were rested. Having arrived in Australia with a stronger squad, Rickelton said the Proteas were buoyed by their victory in the Test championship final as they geared up for a three-match T20 International series against the same opposition starting in Darwin on Sunday. 'It is a different format but I think the Lord's victory instilled belief not just within the group but the wider spread cricketing community in South Africa,' Rickelton said yesterday. 'It definitely does give us a lot of confidence that we can do these things we speak about and dream about. 'But it's a different opportunity, it's a fresh team… so we're looking forward to trying to take momentum from a few months ago, especially with the guys coming back as well, and trying to win a series here in Australia.' Proteas 'raring to go' One of the players who had been given a break over the last two months, Rickelton said he felt rested and was eager to return to action for his country. In the build-up to next year's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, he felt the break would do some key players well in the long run. Picture: Nokwanda Zondi/BackpagePix The unmitigated success of the Proteas since Shukri Conrad took over has been nothing short of incredible, according to legendary South African fast bowler Makhaya Ntini. It was no joke when Rob Walter resigned as the Proteas limited overs coach on April 1, and it meant a month later Conrad was given the role across all three formats. Conrad was first appointed as Test coach in February 2023, and at the time Cricket SA (CSA) had envisioned that two different coaches would handle the limited overs and red ball formats. It came as quite a shock then when Walter resigned in the middle of his contract but given the success Conrad had with the Test team it made sense to give him the extra responsibility.
