Knicks reportedly set to interview Taylor Jenkins, Mike Brown to become next head coach

NBC Sports12 hours ago

The Knicks are done flirting with other teams' coaches (well... probably) and have settled into focusing on coaches currently available.
The Knicks are set next week to interview Taylor Jenkins (the recently-fired Memphis Grizzlies coach) and Mike Brown (a veteran NBA coach, most recently of Sacramento, where he helped them break their playoff drought), reports James Edwards III at The Athletic. However, they may not be alone, and the Knicks may not be done with coaches currently employed by other teams.
The Dallas Mavericks' Jason Kidd and the Chicago Bulls' Billy Donovan are two the New York might circle back to in the coming weeks, according to league sources. The belief around the league is that Kidd and Donovan are looking for contract extensions from their current franchises, and if those don't materialize, they might be open to joining the Knicks.
In addition to Jenkins and Brown interviewing next week, New York is also expected to start contacting organizations to speak with assistant head coaches about the opening, per a league source.
That could open the door for New York to interview former Knicks assistant coach Johnnie Bryant, who is currently an assistant in Cleveland, was a finalist for the Phoenix Suns' job, and is a favorite with a segment of the Knicks fan base.
New York fired Tom Thibodeau — who had just led the team to its first Eastern Conference Finals in 25 years — without an upgrade at coach lined up, or even a clear plan of succession in place. They reached out to five teams (that we are aware of) to inquire about their currently employed coaches, however, all five did not give New York permission to talk to those coaches.
Jenkins is the winningest coach in Grizzlies history, but was fired with three weeks to go in the season. He has a good reputation around the league, which remained intact after the firing, as the team went 4-9 without him (including the playoffs). There were reports he had lost the locker room, and in particular star Ja Morant, in large part because of a change in offensive philosophy this season — one pushed by team management.
Brown coached the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Eastern Conference Finals during the LeBron James era — where he developed ties with current Knicks power broker William 'Worldwide Wes' Wesley — as well as coaching the Lakers and Kings. He also interviewed for the Knicks job in 2020, when it went to Thibodeau.
Whoever the Knicks hire as coach, they are not rushing into a deal. They will interview Jenkins and Brown, then possibly others (former Denver coach Michael Malone is out there, but league sources tell NBC Sports it's a long shot that he gets his foot in the door, he is seen as too similar to Thibodeau). They will wait to see if the situation in Dallas or Chicago changes. With no other coaching vacancies, New York is not going to lose a candidate it likes to another team.

Rookie Cam Smith hits walkoff single to give Astros a thrilling 3-2 win over Twins

HOUSTON (AP) — Rookie Cam Smith hit a tiebreaking RBI single off closer Jhoan Duran with two outs in the ninth inning to give the Houston Astros a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday. Duran (4-2) walked Christian Walker with one out in the ninth and he moved to third on a two-out single by Jake Meyers. Smith then singled on a grounder to center to score Meyers for his first career walkoff hit and Houston's fourth straight victory. Closer Josh Hader (3-0) struck out two in a scoreless ninth for the win. Both teams got strong performances from their starters. Houston's Hunter Brown allowed three hits and two runs with a career-high 12 strikeouts in seven innings. Minnesota's Joe Ryan yielded two hits and two runs while fanning seven in seven innings. Yainer Diaz hit a two-run homer for Houston in the third and Brooks Lee tied it with his shot in the fifth that extended his career-long hitting streak to 14 games. Bryan Abreu struck out three in a scoreless eighth for the Astros. Brown plunked Byron Buxton on the left elbow to start the sixth before walking Trevor Larnach. But he retired the next three batters, with two strikeouts to escape the jam. Buxton remained in the game for the bottom of the inning but was replaced in center field by Harrison Bader in the bottom of the seventh. The team said he had left because of a bruised left elbow. Smith's single to win it. Key stat Brown has a 1.88 ERA, which ranks second in the American League. Up next ___

Fever's Caitlin Clark dominates 1st half vs. Liberty

The post Fever's Caitlin Clark dominates 1st half vs. Liberty appeared first on ClutchPoints. Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark delivered a dominant first-half performance in her return from injury, scoring a career-high 25 points in any half to help the Fever take a 53-50 halftime lead over the defending champion New York Liberty on Saturday afternoon. Advertisement The 23-year-old sophomore, who had missed five games with a quad strain, shot 9-of-13 from the field and 6-of-9 from beyond the arc. Clark added five rebounds and three assists in 17 first-half minutes. Caitlin Clark's early barrage sparks Fever as she returns from injury vs. Liberty She erupted in the opening quarter with 14 points, including a stretch of three consecutive three-pointers in under 40 seconds. Each of those shots came from over 30 feet out, energizing the home crowd at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Clark originally sustained the injury in a 90-88 loss to the Liberty on May 24. In that game, Indiana held an eight-point lead entering the fourth quarter but managed just 12 points in the final period and came up short. It remains the Fever's only meeting with New York this season prior to Saturday. Advertisement The Fever entered the contest with a 4-5 record, sitting seventh overall in the WNBA standings and third in the Eastern Conference. Indiana went 2-3 in Clark's absence. New York has been led by Sabrina Ionescu with 17 points and Breanna Stewart with 14 at the break. The Liberty, who won the 2024 WNBA title, are looking to extend their strong form behind their All-Star core. Clark's return comes at a pivotal time as the Fever seek to build momentum. Her offensive efficiency and long-range shooting provided an immediate spark for a team aiming to rise in the standings. Caitlin Clark shines in return as Indiana Fever hand New York Liberty first loss of season

Caitlin Clark sized up Breanna Stewart on the wing in the second quarter, crossed over and stepped back for a 3-pointer from 31 feet. After the preposterous triple splashed through the net, Clark ribbed the two-time MVP back down the court, and all Stewart could do was laugh. After five games away from the court, Clark was rearing to go, eager to get the Fever back on track after an uneven start to the season. That her return came against the undefeated New York Liberty was icing on the cake, as the reigning rookie of the year delighted in taking on Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu in an encore of May 24's thriller between the two teams. Indiana gave away a fourth-quarter lead in that meeting but took care of business in the final period this time around. Led by Clark's 32 points and nine assists, the Fever (5-5) cracked 100 points for the first time this season and dealt the 2025 Liberty (9-1) their first defeat, winning 102-88. Caitlin Clark knocks down her 7th three to extend our 17-0 run and force a timeout 🔥 — Indiana Fever (@IndianaFever) June 14, 2025 Kelsey Mitchell added 22 points, Aliyah Boston had 14 and Sydney Colson — back in a bench role after starting in Clark's absence — had her first double-digit scoring effort for the Fever to go along with six assists. The Fever were out of sorts to start, falling behind 13-6 within the first four minutes. The deficit was still at nine when Clark returned for her second shift of the first quarter. (Coach Stephanie White played Clark in shorter spurts in her return from injury.) But a nine-point flurry in 38 seconds to end the quarter — three 3-pointers from a combined 93 feet — got Clark in a rhythm. The rest of the team fed off that energy as Indiana took a 53-50 lead into halftime, the first time all year that New York trailed at the break. Advertisement Clark was unconscious from distance in the first half, making six of nine 3-pointers en route to 25 points, her career-high for a half. She toyed with Natasha Cloud, Rebekah Gardner and any other Liberty defender who wound up guarding her. New York was forced to put Stewart on Clark in the second half with Leonie Fiebich at EuroBasket. It worked in isolation, as Clark had seven points. However the point guard still had six assists that led to 15 points and dragged Stewart onto the perimeter, compromising the Liberty's rebounding. They had thrived on second chances in the first half. — Sabreena Merchant Entering Sunday's game against the Fever, the Liberty had the league's No. 1 defensive rating, allowing only 88.1 points per 100 possessions. That mark was seven points better than the league's second-best defense. But playing without their defensive anchor Jonquel Jones, New York's defense struggled, especially in the first half. The Liberty allowed 53 first-half points, the most they had given up in a half this season. Indiana shot better than 40 percent from 3-point range in each quarter, as the Liberty tried to throw different defensive looks at the Fever, often to no avail. Cloud, Kennedy Burke, Gardner and Stewart all guarded Clark at different points in the game. And even though Clark went scoreless in the fourth quarter, with Stewart largely serving as the primary defender, New York allowed Indiana's Mitchell to get into the lane too often for their liking and surrendered open looks to guards Colson and Lexie Hull. Clark's 32 point outing will draw headlines, but it's the 39 combined points scored by Colson, Hull, and center Damiris Dantas that really cost New York this game — Ben Pickman When the Liberty and Fever met on May 24, Jones helped to orchestrate New York's fourth-quarter comeback. The 2021 league MVP and 2024 WNBA Finals MVP scored 14 of her 26 points in the fourth quarter, as the Liberty eked out a two-point win. Advertisement Jones missed her second consecutive game on Saturday as she deals with an ankle injury that she suffered against the Washington Mystics on June 5. Her absence was felt. Saturday's game flipped in the third quarter as Indiana went on a 19-0 run. The Liberty never regained the lead, and although they finished with 44 paint points, New York allowed 36 points in the paint and got outrebounded. The good news? Coach Sandy Brondello said pregame she expects Jones to return on Tuesday when the Liberty play the Atlanta Dream. — Pickman (Photo of Caitlin Clark: Trevor Ruszkowski / USA Today)
