Snooker star Zhao: from ban to Chinese sporting history

Yahoo05-05-2025
In 2015 a teenage Zhao Xintong told a documentary he wanted to be like Chinese snooker trailblazer Ding Junhui.
But now 28, Zhao has surpassed his compatriot's notable achievements by becoming China's first world snooker champion in stunning style on Monday.
Zhao defeated three-time world champion Mark Williams 18-12 in the final to clinch the title at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre on Monday.
The left-hander's unexpected triumph is the culmination of a redemption story that ensures him a place in Chinese sporting history.
Zhao's journey from first picking up a cue aged eight to glory in his maiden appearance in the World Snooker Championship final has not been without controversy.
The 2021 UK Championship winner was playing at the Crucible as an amateur as he continued his comeback from a 20-month ban for his involvement in a major betting scandal.
Chinese players in recent years have become a significant force in snooker, but in 2023, 10 players from the country were banned in a match-fixing case that shook the sport to its foundations.
Two players, Liang Wenbo and Li Hang, were banned for life.
Zhao's suspension was the shortest, reflecting the fact that while he bet on matches, he did not throw them.
- Away from home -
Like many of the Chinese players now making a name for themselves, Zhao has made the northern English city of Sheffield his base.
Zhao is with the Chinese-run Victoria's Snooker Academy, a two-floor facility just 10 minutes by foot from the Crucible.
Not far away there is also the Ding Junhui Snooker Academy.
A record 10 Chinese were among the final 32 players competing at the Crucible, reflecting just how prominent the country now is in the sport.
For many of them, including Zhao, it all comes back to Ding, China's first snooker star.
"My goal when I was younger was to become someone like Ding Junhui," a 17-year-old Zhao told a Chinese documentary in 2015 called, "Becoming Ding Junhui".
The so-called grandfather of Chinese snooker won the UK Championship three times and the Masters in 2011.
Ding lost the world championship final against Mark Selby in 2016.
- 'Luckiest kid in the world' -
Zhao was born in the tourist city of Xian but as a child moved to the metropolis of Shenzhen, just over the border from Hong Kong, when his parents went there for work.
An only child, Zhao's father Zhao Xiaowei is the vice-president of a hospital and his mother, Wen Anxiao, is a nurse in the same hospital.
Zhao first became interested in snooker because of some tables set up outside small stores near his home.
As his interest grew, his parents put a snooker table in one of the rooms in their home and made it his practice room.
Even then, as is typical for many Chinese parents, they were sceptical about his sporting ambitions and wanted him to study.
In the documentary, Zhao's mother recalls: "I asked him, when you've finished university what job will you do?
"He said, 'Play snooker'. He said it very firmly, he didn't need to think about it."
She says that was the moment she decided to fully support his decision to make snooker his life.
Acknowledging that support from his parents, Zhao said: "I'm the luckiest kid in the snooker world."
The same programme includes a ringing endorsement from Ding's father, calling Zhao his "favourite" player and a "rare" talent.
"There's no problem with this child's character," he says.
Seven-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan is another big fan of Zhao, even after suffering a crushing 17-7 semi-final defeat to him in Sheffield last week.
The two have been known to practise and dine together, and they shared a warm embrace in the dressing rooms after Zhao's devastating display.
Away from snooker and as his fame grows, Zhao's personal life has attracted scrutiny in China.
Several years ago, photos emerged of him with a Chinese student he met in Britain in which he appeared to show off his family's supposed wealth.
One picture showed Zhao sitting in the boot of a Rolls Royce.
After Monday's stunning success, Zhao has the riches of the snooker world at his feet.

JJ Pegues climbing up depth chart with preseason performance

The Las Vegas Raiders are looking for a defensive tackle to step up after the Christian Wilkins saga. So far, rookie JJ Pegues has answered the call during the Raiders' first two preseason games. Pegues had a handful of quality reps as a run defender against the Seattle Seahawks and managed to record four pressures as a pass-rusher versus the San Francisco 49ers, tied for the second-most among interior defenders according to Pro Football Focus. Additionally, the Ole Miss product continued to stand out against the run last weekend. That likely secured his spot on Las Vegas' 53-man roster, and also should help him gain some traction on the team's depth chart. So, let's flip on the tape and break down his performance on Saturday. Let's start with a good example of the former Rebel's knockback power as a run defender. The 49ers run lead zone to the weakside of the formation, putting the center one-on-one with Pegues, who appears to be two-gapping, meaning he's responsible for both A-gaps. Pegues uses good pad level and his impressive upper body strength at the point of attack to push the center into the backfield and reset the line of scrimmage. From there, the defender makes sure the strong side A-gap is protected by shading to that side of the center while peeking into the backfield. Because he won at the point of attack, once Pegues sees the running back cut into the weakside A-gap, he's able to cross the center's face and get involved in the tackle while the offensive lineman is still hanging onto him. Considering Las Vegas could use help at nose tackle, this is a pretty encouraging rep from the rookie. This next rep is almost identical to the last one, where Pegues is physically dominant at the point of attack to reset the line of scrimmage. Again, he knocks the center into the backfield, which helps cut the field in half by forcing the running back to cut up the field. Also, Pegues manages to get involved in another tackle while the center is still hanging onto him. Another strong rep against the run while lined up as a shade nose tackle. Unfortunately, Las Vegas has issues on the back end covering San Francisco's play-action pass here. So the ball is out of the quarterback's hands too quickly for the defensive tackle to get a sack, but he does manage to record a win as a pass-rusher. Post-snap, Pegues quickly recognizes it's a play-action fake and not a run play, transitioning from run to pass defense and abandoning his run responsibilities (the A-gap). Then, Pegues does a great job of using the left guard's momentum against him, winning with a hump move to get pressure. Again, the ball is out too quickly for the defensive lineman to hit home, but reps like these can pay off later with better coverage. The 49ers had a lot of quick passes to attack the Raiders' soft zones on Saturday. So the play above is another rep where Pegues gets a win without anything to show for it, since the quarterback gets rid of the ball almost immediately after his back foot hits the ground. Regardless, the defensive tackle does a good job of recognizing the quick set from the guard, adjusting his path to win around the outside by defeating the guard's hands. Again, plays like this one will pay off later when the offense runs a longer developing pass play or the quarterback is forced to work through his reads. Later in the game, the Raiders found success by having Pegues slant inside or running line games with him. Here, they run Cover 0, where both linebackers and the nickelback blitz while the defensive tackle lines up as a 3-technique in the B-gap pre-snap before slanting into the A-gap post-snap. He manages to capture the guard's attention by squaring up the guard before going inside, which allows the nickel to be a free rusher on the blitz. Granted, the running back does a good job of coming off the linebacker and picking up the defensive back in the protection scheme. However, Pegues keeps his feet moving and goes from attacking the center to bull rushing the guard, freeing up the linebacker (No. 43, Michael Barrett) to get the clean-up sack. So, the rookie managed to help two teammates get pressure on the quarterback while collapsing the pocket himself. This time, the Raiders run a T/E stunt where Pegues is the penetrator. Initially, he disguises the line game well by working up the field with his first two steps before pivoting to the outside and attacking the right tackle. As a result, he catches the right tackle off guard and is physical at the point of attack to win the rep and get pressure. Unfortunately, the ball is out quickly again, but this is still another quality rush from the rookie.

Shohei Ohtani still piling up numbers at an incredible rate

Coors Field is usually a great place to pad one's statistics, and Shohei Ohtani did just that on Tuesday. But he's also been hitting everywhere of late, leading the National League in several categories. But he hit a few notable numbers in the Dodgers' 11-4 win over the Rockies in Denver. Ohtani began the day tied for the league lead with 43 home runs. Kyle Schwarber hit his 44th home run for the Phillies in a game that started 112 minutes earlier than Dodgers-Rockies. In the second inning at Coors Field, Ohtani launched his own 44th home run, a solo shot against Austin Gomber. Ohtani already set the Dodgers' single-season record with 54 home runs last season, and this year with 36 games remaining on the schedule he's on pace for 57. But just getting to 44 home runs this year puts him in rarefied air in franchise history. There have only been five such seasons in Dodgers history, and Ohtani is the only one to do so twice: Shohei Ohtani (2024) 54 Shawn Green (2001) 49 Adrían Beltré (2004) 48 Cody Bellinger (2019) 47 Shohei Ohtani (2025) 44 and counting The home run also put Ohtani's major-league-leading total to 301 total bases on the season, making him just the 14th Dodger to have 300 total bases in consecutive season, the first to do so since both Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman turned the trick in 2022-23. Since the start of 2024, Ohtani now has 712 total bases, just 52 shy of Babe Herman's franchise record for a two-year span from 1929-30. In August, Ohtani is hitting .381/.506/.746 with six home runs and 10 extra-base hits in 17 games. Ohtani on Tuesday later walked, and also reached on a fielder's choice in the seventh inning. After the latter, he scored on a single by Will Smith. That gave Ohtani 120 runs scored this season, 22 more than anyone else in the majors (Aaron Judge) and 31 runs more than anyone else in the NL (Juan Soto and Elly De La Cruz). Tuesday was only the Dodgers' 126th game of the season. He's the first major league player to score 120 runs within his team's first 126 games since Ted Williams in 1949. That puts Ohtani on pace for 154 runs on the season. The Dodgers' franchise record is 148 runs scored, by Hub Collins in 1890, Brooklyn's first year in the National League. In the modern era (since 1900), Herman holds the Dodgers record with 143 runs scored in 1930. Since MLB integration in 1947, only two major leaguers have scored 150 runs in a season — Williiams, with 150 runs in 1949, and Jeff Bagwell, who scored 152 times in 2000 for the Astros. Ohtani has 36 more games to add to his already prolific totals on offense. Oh yeah, and he's pitching on Wednesday, too.
