‘Heartbreaking': One of Bradford County's largest employers shuts down
Action News Jax is looking into the impacts as one local town is losing one of its biggest employers.
Davis Express, a long-time trucking company, is shutting down and laying off its staff.
Jimmy Davis, the company's owner and president, took to social media to announce the closure. In a Facebook post, he said the company has been unprofitable since early 2023 and does not see any signs of improvement in 2025.

A notice to the state said Davis Express has 163 employees, and the company said they will all be paid through mid-June.
The company is one of the ten biggest employers in all of Bradford County, and in Starke, many people are connected to the trucking company.
'It's definitely heartbreaking,' Jose Cabrera, who works at Laredo Mexican Restaurant, said.

'It was sad,' Bonnie Ripley, who lives in Starke, said. 'My husband started working for Davis Trucking, so we moved here. He really enjoyed the company, and he felt like they had strong family values.'
Lake Ray, the president of the First Coast Manufacturers Association, said the impacts of this closure could be significant.
'When we see companies like this shut down, it is a little bit of a concern because it does mean that there will be a reshuffle of companies in terms of getting the goods and being able to manufacture,' Ray said.

Major traffic shift begins on CR 210 in St. Johns County
A major traffic shift in St. Johns County is causing concerns for some drivers and nearby business owners. The County Road 210 Widening Project from I-95 to US-1 is turning what was a two-lane road into six. Beginning Monday night, traffic will be diverted. All of the traffic in the 0.7 mile strip is going to be moved over to the newly constructed roadway on the other side, making for restricted left turns. The roadway will have two lanes going eastbound and one westbound lane. The shift is expected to be done by the end of the week. Huyen Ngo owns both Sugarcoat Nails and Beary Boba off CR 210. She's been dealing with the widening of the road since her businesses opened in fall 2023. 'I think it's going to confuse a lot of customers that are used to this older traffic flow now,' said Ngo. 'I know a lot of my younger drivers from my Beary Boba shop are a little bit terrified of this road as well.' The roadway is also getting a new traffic signal, sidewalk, and bike lanes to help alleviate congestion in the area. Nate Gottschalk is the project manager for St. Johns County Road and Bridge Engineering. He tells Action News Jax the project started in January 2024 and was supposed to be finished this fall; however, it's been delayed. 'We've had to add time due to some utility conflicts, weather delays, things of that nature,' said Gottschalk. The project is now expected to be complete in Spring 2026. Brett's in Fernandina Beach is being demolished: Vote on its replacement
Brett's Waterway Cafe is shutting down, and the City of Fernandina Beach wants the public's input on what should take its place inside the Fernandina Harbor Marina. The current lease between the city and Brett's owners, the Center Street Restaurant Group, ends in December, according to officials. Because of the building's age and structural integrity, the city intends to demolish it at the beginning of the year. Georgia gas prices still trending lower
The average cost of gas prices at the pump in Georgia is continuing its downward trend. According to AAA's gas price tracker, the price of a gallon of gas for regular unleaded is down another two cents compared to last week. Month-to-month, it's four cents lower and a full 43 cents lower than last year. AAA said that was almost $7 less than a year ago for the same refueling effort. 'Remember, we're still at the front end of hurricane season, and a sudden storm could bump up oil prices, causing gas prices to increase.' As far as those oil market fluctuations, AAA said the cost of a barrel of oil had settled at $62.85 as crude inventories fell by 4.3 million barrels over the past week. AAA said the U.S. crude oil inventory is roughly 7% lower than the five-year average for this time of year. This comes as prices across the nation fall and summer driving season continues. While inventories of crude oil are down, AAA also reported that supply in the market is outweighing demand. National gas prices were averaging $3.12 per gallon, according to AAA.
