The Boston Banshees are the city's new women's pro rugby team

Axios29-01-2025

A new rugby team will make its debut this spring: the Boston Banshees.
Driving the news: The Women's Elite Rugby league unveiled the team names for Boston and the five other cities participating in the inaugural season.
The other teams are the Bay Breakers in California, the Chicago Tempest, the Denver Onyx, the New York Exiles and the Twin Cities Gemini.
Zoom in: The Boston team's name gives a nod to the banshees described in Celtic folklore.
Their screams were believed to signal impending doom.
The league is gearing up for its debut, having announced head coaches for each team late last year.
WER tapped Kittery Ruiz, Brown University's women's rugby assistant coach, as Boston's head coach.
Ruiz played on the Women's National Team, representing the U.S. at the 2010 and 2014 Rugby World Cups, per Brown.

Phillies Reliever José Ruiz Heading to Rival Braves After Wavier Claim

Phillies Reliever José Ruiz Heading to Rival Braves After Wavier Claim originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Back on June 1st, the Phillies decided to juggle their bullpen by promoting No. 12 prospect Seth Johnson back to the majors. To make room for the starter-turned-reliever on the roster, Philly designated José Ruiz for assignment. Advertisement Ruiz, who is out of minor league options, was exposed to waivers, giving the other 29 clubs a shot at claiming him. One of them did. The NL East Rival Atlanta Braves, who have their own bullpen woes this season, chose to pick up Ruiz. They will hope that the 30-year-old righty can somewhat return to form after starting off 2025 with several issues. Ruiz is in his seventh full season of major league action. Last year with Philadelphia, he pitched to a respectable 3.71 ERA with 52 strikeouts and a 1.33 WHIP in 51 innings. However, this spring has presented one challenge after another for Ruiz. He struggled to the tune of an ERA just under 5 through April, went on the 15-day IL, then came back to more struggles. He allowed five runs in his last outing to the Mulwaukee Brewers, prompting Philly to cut ties. José Ruiz had three holds early this season but otherwise wasn't nearly effective enough for the Phillies to keep Streicher-Imagn Images Ruiz joins a Braves club that has gone through it's share of former Philly arms. Hector Neris and Enyel De Los Santos both made the club out of spring training. Neris was cut after a terrible first week, while De Los Santos is still on board with a sub-3 ERA. Craig Kimbrel returned to Atlanta as well, but he only pitched one game for them before being DFA'd. Advertisement Atlanta's bullpen is right in the middle of MLB with a combined 3.83 ERA. If Ruiz can reset in the new environment, he could cause problems for his old club with the division still far from decided. Leinster 37-19 Glasgow: Three things we learned

Scots downed in Dublin… again For a Scottish rugby player, heading for Dublin must be about as much fun as heading to the dentist – you know there's going to be pain. No Scottish side has ever won at the Aviva Stadium and Irish rugby's haunted house spooked Glasgow into playing well below their capabilities. Advertisement Leinster were very good. There was a lot of pre-match chat about them being off the boil, but the sight of Scottish opposition on home soil was the perfect tonic. It followed a similar pattern to many Irish v Scottish match-ups in recent times, and the hex the Irish have over their Celtic cousins shows little sign of being broken any time soon. Warriors can be proud of title defence Despite the disappointing finale, Glasgow can be proud of the defence they put up of their URC title in what has been a very testing season. The injury list has been savage. Sione Tuipulotu, Huw Jones, Zander Fagerson, Scott Cummings and Jack Dempsey have all missed big chunks of the season. They're not the only ones. Advertisement It's been a struggle and Warriors have had to dig far down into their reserves to find players to step into the breach. The fact they made it to the last four, and dispatched a good Stormers side so impressively in the quarter-finals, is an achievement in itself. Franco Smith – will he stay or will he go? Franco Smith looked emotionally drained when he spoke to BBC Scotland in the bowels of the Aviva Stadium after Saturday's defeat. Long seasons away from your family, living every moment of highs and lows of a team you have invested so much into emotionally, will do that to you. The South African was in no mood to offer any guarantees he will still be at Scotstoun next season. Advertisement Smith is clearly unhappy at the direction of travel under performance director David Nucifora with regards to player recruitment, and you wonder if the head coach perhaps feels he has done all he can at Glasgow Warriors.
