Saudi Arabia ramps up coffee production with new initiative

Arab News23-07-2025
JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia has launched an initiative to increase high-quality coffee seedling production using tissue culture technology as part of the Kingdom's push to develop its coffee sector and promote sustainable agriculture.
Led by the Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program, or Saudi Reef, in cooperation with the National Centre for Research and Development of Sustainable Agriculture, also known as Estidamah, the project will plant 50,000 seedlings and boost the productivity of coffee trees by 30 percent by the end of 2025.
Majid Al-Brikan, spokesperson for Saudi Reef, said the initiative began with selecting six elite genetic samples from coffee trees in Jazan, Asir and Baha.
These were supplied to labs, producing 17,000 somatic embryos and 4,000 plants, now undergoing the rooting phase.
So far, 1,200 plants have been transferred to greenhouse facilities for acclimatisation, and another 400 seedlings are in the hardening stage.
A bioreactor growth accelerator has also been installed to speed up production and reduce reliance on manual labor.
According to Al-Brikan, the project has yielded significant scientific breakthroughs, including the re-evaluation of 82 genetic patterns, now grouped into 12 genetic groups based on morphological similarities.
Seedlings are also being produced through cuttings of selected genotypes, with 1,000 rooted cuttings prepared to yield traceable, high-quality plants.
A key focus of the initiative is the development of disease-resistant and drought-tolerant coffee varieties, supporting the Kingdom's goals for climate-resilient agriculture.
Fourteen knowledge-based agricultural products have also been developed to promote best practices across coffee farms.
The program includes development of a reference book for local farmers on cultivation and post-harvest practices.
To support knowledge transfer, at least 109 farmers have participated in domestic and international study tours, and more than 200 stakeholders have received training through workshops and seminars.
The program has also engaged with global coffee events to promote Saudi Arabia's growing presence in the international market.

Saudi Arabia to unveil national media strategy soon, says minister

Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — Minister of Media Salman Al-Dosari confirmed on Wednesday that Saudi Arabia has not yet launched its official media sector strategy, stating that the national media strategy remains under review and will be formally announced in due course. Speaking during the government press conference in Riyadh, Al-Dosari said the Saudi media landscape is evolving from merely relaying news to creating impact, emphasizing that the sector is moving "from medium to message." He also announced that the upcoming edition of the Saudi Media Forum will be held under the patronage of King Salman bin Abdulaziz, positioning it as a national platform aligned with global media momentum and future-focused tools. '2030 is no longer a date in the future, it symbolizes limitless ambition. In Saudi Arabia, dreams aren't told, they're built. Tomorrow doesn't wait; it's accomplished today,' Al-Dosari added. Highlighting the Kingdom's humanitarian role, the minister noted that Saudi Arabia is transforming its aid initiatives into a sustainable humanitarian system. Since its inception, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) has delivered more than SR30 billion in aid to 108 countries through over 3,500 development and relief programs. Al-Dosari also revealed that around 230,000 surgeries have been performed under Saudi Arabia's overseas voluntary medical campaigns. Meanwhile, the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen has provided over SR4.27 billion in funding for more than 265 projects across key sectors including roads, water, health, and education. Turning to technology and innovation, Al-Dosari said Saudi Arabia sees sustainable development as a transnational responsibility. 'We are crafting the algorithms of the future, turning data into decisions and artificial intelligence into development,' he noted. Saudi Arabia's digital economy reached SR495 billion in 2024, accounting for 15% of GDP and growing at an annual rate of nearly 7%. The number of tech companies listed on the Saudi stock exchange has also surged to 23 in 2024, up from just two in 2020. 'Today, we don't just consume technology, we contribute to building it with a value-driven and human-centered vision,' Al-Dosari said.

Saudi royal reserve launches eco campaigns

RIYADH: The Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve Development Authority has stepped up efforts to combat environmental challenges through campaigns aimed at reducing harmful behaviors and raising awareness about pollution, the Saudi Press Agency reported. The authority has warned of the cumulative impact of harmful practices, stressing that actions like lighting fires in open areas or dumping waste severely damage soil and vegetation and weaken the ecosystem's ability to regenerate and stay balanced. Pollution begins in the soil, it explained, where chemicals and solid pollutants affect its biological properties and disrupt its role in supporting plant life. The damage extends to groundwater and worsens as pollutants reach the air, releasing toxic gases from burning or decomposing waste. The authority said environmental protection depended on compliance with regulations, adding that cooperation between individuals and relevant entities was key to minimizing damage and ensuring ecosystem stability across the Kingdom. Covering 91,500 sq. km, the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve is the second-largest royal reserve, home to 138 wildlife species and 179 plant species. It is known for its rich ecology, stunning landscapes and heritage sites.
