DOJ drops charges against Utah doctor accused of throwing away COVID vaccines, distributing fake vaccination cards
Michael Kirk Moore Jr. and three of his associates were indicted by a federal grand jury in January 2023 and accused of discarding more than $28,000 worth of government-provided COVID-19 vaccines and of distributing nearly two thousand fraudulent COVID-19 vaccination cards in exchange for cash or required 'donations.'
The indictment also alleged that Moore and his associates administered saline shots to children, at the request of the parents, so the children would think they were receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.
The trial began a week ago in Salt Lake City, but Bondi announced Saturday that the DOJ would dismiss the charges.
'At my direction @TheJusticeDept has dismissed charges against Dr. Kirk Moore,' Bondi wrote in a post on the social platform X.
'Dr. Moore gave his patients a choice when the federal government refused to do so,' she continued. 'He did not deserve the years in prison he was facing. It ends today.'
The case has become a rallying cry for many in the GOP, who have railed against the charges filed under the Biden administration.
The announcement also comes as Bondi has faced growing scrutiny by members of Trump's right-wing base for her handling of the case related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
The DOJ put out a memo on Monday concluding there was no so-called client list that Epstein kept to blackmail high-profile associates, refuting popular conspiracy theories suggesting otherwise. The memo also said there was no evidence to suggest foul play was involved in Epstein's death, which had previously been ruled a suicide.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) thanked Bondi for 'dropping the WRONGFUL charges against Dr. Kirk Moore,' whom Greene called 'a hero who refused to inject his patients with a government mandated unsafe vaccine!'
'We can never again allow our government to turn tyrannical under our watch,' she continued. 'Thankfully, as soon as I told Pam Bondi about Dr. Moore's case she swiftly moved to drop the charges against him. This is a big win!'
Bondi acknowledged the role Greene played in the decision.
'This would not have been possible without @RepMTG who brought this case to my attention. She has been a warrior for Dr. Moore and for ending the weaponization of government,' Bondi wrote in a subsequent post on X.
She also thanked Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), saying on X he 'has been a champion for advocating to end the weaponization of government, including to Dr. Moore.'

DeSantis planning second Florida immigration detention facility
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Thursday teased plans to open a second migrant detention facility in the Sunshine State despite pushback over ' Alligator Alcatraz.' DeSantis said the Baker Correctional Institution, a state prison about 43 miles west of downtown Jacksonville, Fla., will now hold migrants awaiting deportation, according to The Associated Press. The move comes just weeks after the state opened its 'Alligator Alcatraz' facility in the Everglades. Its construction was spurred by President Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration. Trump, along with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem, visited the center last month. 'There is a demand for this. I'm confident that it will be filled,' DeSantis said in his announcement Thursday, referring to the new center as 'Deportation Depot.' Development of the new facility could cost up to $6 million, despite the preexisting structure, he added. It currently features 1,300 beds but officials in the state are looking to add at least 700 more. The proposal comes as federal judges weigh legal challenges to 'Alligator Alcatraz,' including whether a government agency or private contractor has the legal authority to detain people or act as an immigration enforcement officer and if its construction complies with federal environmental laws. Last month, the governor said he hoped Florida would be used as the 'force multiplier' for deportations. 'I don't want it to be where illegals are just stored there, and then just kind of sitting. I want it to be where illegals are here, there's an aggressive processing and an aggressive deportation schedule,' he said. The Trump administration has also been in contact with other GOP governors about similar construction projects in other states, according to Noem. While a list of potential states has not been provided, DHS announced a partnership with Indiana to build the ' Speedway Slammer,' a facility that would be located about 65 miles north of Indianapolis. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) just last month launched grant program that will offer funding to states to build detention centers.

Blumenthal calls for firing of RFK Jr. ally over violent rhetoric
Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) is demanding Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr 'immediately' fire a key ally from his role as vaccine advisor on a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention panel due to 'escalating and violent' rhetoric in the wake of an attack on CDC headquarters. Blumenthal wrote a letter to Kennedy on Aug. 13 calling for him to fire Robert Malone from the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). Blumenthal said Malone 'issued a meme-filled post' on his personal blog 'that included violent and threatening images that appeared to be directed at government officials.' Hours before a gunman attacked CDC headquarters, Malone uploaded a post to his personal blog that included an image of a revolver loaded with a single bullet and the words 'Five out of six scientists have proven that Russian roulette is harmless.' Less than 48 hours after the attack, another of Malone's blog posts included images of guns and meme with the words 'if you need a disarmed society to govern, you suck at governing.' On Aug. 8, a gunman opened fire on the CDC in Atlanta, killing a responding police officer. Officials said almost 500 shell casings were recovered, and about 200 struck six different facilities on the agency's campus. The alleged shooter was motivated by his distrust of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to law enforcement. Kennedy tapped Malone as one of eight hand-picked replacement members of the ACIP in June after firing the 17 sitting panelists. Malone is a former researcher who helped lay the groundwork for mRNA vaccine technology, but has since turned into a self-professed anti-vaxxer, COVID-19 skeptic and close advisor to Kennedy. ACIP is an influential panel that recommends which vaccines go on the childhood and adult schedules after reviewing safety data. If ACIP endorses a vaccine, insurers must cover it. 'Malone has displayed an unfathomable failure of judgment and heartlessness for the family of slain Officer Rose, and for the thousands of CDC staff on whom the work of ACIP depends,' Blumenthal wrote in the letter. 'Dr. Malone's escalating and violent rhetoric—including in the aftermath of this tragic incident—has no place on a panel responsible for determining immunization recommendations for children and adults throughout our country,' he continued, before calling on Kennedy to fire Malone immediately. Malone did not immediately respond to requests for comment. 'Sen. Blumenthal's demand is nothing more than virtue signaling,' an HHS spokesman told The Hill. 'Dr. Malone was selected for ACIP based on his long-standing scientific credentials and we are grateful to him for taking the call to serve. This is not a moment for the media or democratic lawmakers to exploit a tragedy for political gain.'
