The lawyers referred to a press conference held on Wednesday by Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ) Director Datuk M Kumar regarding Zara's death. 'Among the key disclosures made by him was that the Special Task Force's investigation had found evidence pointing towards bullying before the incident involving Zara,' they said. They are Shahlan Jufri, Rizwandean M Borhan, Mohd Luqman Syazwan Zabidi, Mohd Syarulnizam Mohd Salleh and Farrah Nasser. 'If these accounts can be relied on in court, we propose that the Attorney General charge the individuals named under Section 507D(2) of the Penal Code. 'Under that section, offenders can be punished with imprisonment of up to 10 years, a fine, or both. Once this step is taken, an inquest would no longer be necessary,' they added. They said if the evidence was not strong or insufficient to form an offence under the same section, further investigation must continue to strengthen the case, with an inquest to be held simultaneously. The statement also dismissed a so-called 'plot twist' circulated on social media in recent weeks suggesting their client was responsible for Zara's death. 'That 'plot twist' is a vile and despicable narrative concocted to defame our client and Zara,' the lawyers said. They expressed gratitude to Kumar and the Special Task Force for acting swiftly to investigate Zara's death and urged anyone with information to come forward. 'If you are afraid or need assistance to do so, you can meet with us,' they said. Sabah think tank launches study to tackle bullying crisis head-on after deaths of schoolgirl and doctor
KOTA KINABALU, Aug 17 — The Institute for Development Studies (IDS) Sabah is conducting a comprehensive study on the issue of bullying in the state. Its chairwoman, Datuk Seri Azizah Mohd Dun, said the study will be thorough and detailed to effectively tackle the problem. She said input from various experts, including those in psychology and child development, will be taken into account. 'Such efforts are vital, especially in the current climate where many influences can increase children's stress levels,' she said. On the issue of bullying, she cited cases involving the late student Zara Qairina Mahathir and specialist doctor Dr Tay Tien Yaa. 'We need to conduct a holistic study to address this issue comprehensively, because this problem also exists in other sectors. 'So we hope to be able to present some recommendations after this study is completed,' she added, after chairing a Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Women meeting at Wisma IDS, Kepayan on Friday. 'Bullying does not only inflict physical harm, it leaves deep psychological trauma on its victims. As a society, we must stand united in rejecting this toxic culture,' she said. Azizah urged authorities, educational institutions and local communities to take swift and firm action against those responsible, stressing that appropriate punishment must be enforced to send a clear message that bullying will not be tolerated at any level. She also highlighted the importance of providing comprehensive support to victims, including counselling, emotional guidance, and psychological assistance, to ensure a full recovery. 'Efforts to combat bullying require a holistic approach. Continuous awareness campaigns and cooperation from schools, NGOs, parents, and the media are vital in changing public attitudes and behaviours surrounding this issue,' she added. Azizah reiterated her commitment to advocating for stronger laws and policies to safeguard vulnerable groups, particularly the younger generation, and to ensure that community safety and harmony remain well protected. — The Borneo Post

Hundreds brave rain to rally for Zara Qairina and safer schools in Sabah
KOTA KINABALU, Aug 17 — Rallies across Sabah continued to be held in remembrance of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir. On Saturday evening, one such rally took place at Lintasan Deasoka here, with around 500 people in attendance despite continuous rain. Participants stood under umbrellas as they chanted support for Zara and her family, while others held placards demanding that schools be made safe spaces for all. Police guarded the perimeter to safeguard against any untoward incidents. According to organiser Jaya Kumar, 47, from the Indian Civil Servant Retirees Organisation, the gathering was to demand justice for Zara and highlight the rising number of bullying incidents. Jaya said if it wasn't for the rakyat's voices, the case might have already been closed, expressing dismay over a recent report that an investigating officer in the case failed to follow Standard Operating Procedures. 'This issue does not involve race or religion, it involves the loss of a child's life. I have children. How can I trust to send them to school with the situation now? Strict action must be taken by the authorities, parents and schools over this bullying issue. I hope that not just in Sabah, but the whole Malaysia, we do not see a second Zara,' he said. 'With these boxes, we can receive daily updates on what is happening in schools and detect incidents early. I came here not to complain to any party, but to fight for justice as Malaysians. Cops find leads in assault on Rafizi's son
KUALA LUMPUR: The police have found several positive leads in tracking down the suspects involved in the assault of Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's son at a shopping mall in Putrajaya. Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the leads were obtained following examination and review of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage around the shopping area. 'There are leads from the CCTV recordings, but not fully at this time,' he said, Bernama reported. He said 14 individuals have been called to assist in the investigation so far. Comm Shazeli said police were also investigating a threat message received by Rafizi's wife in relation to the incident, confirming that it was the first time the former economy minister's wife had received such a message via WhatsApp. On Wednesday, police confirmed the son of the former PKR deputy president was assaulted in an incident at about 2pm at the pick-up and drop-off area of a shopping mall in Putrajaya.
