Ranchi: The Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL) has issued a public advisory, calling upon all festival organisers, committees, devotees, and citizens across the state to strictly adhere to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) prescribed for festivals and religious processions.
The advisory was released in light of the directive issued by the Jharkhand high court on June 10, 2025, it said.
The primary objective of the SOP is to ensure uninterrupted and safe power supply during various cultural and religious events while preventing electrical hazards and accidents. JBVNL clarified that power supply will normally remain uninterrupted during festivals and processions. However, to mitigate risks associated with overhead power lines and infrastructure, strict regulations have been outlined regarding the permissible height of flags, sound systems, DJs, and decorative floats on vehicles.
The height of such items from the ground must not exceed 4 metres . Additionally, individuals are strictly prohibited from sitting on rooftops of buses or other tall vehicles during processions, and no high structures or flags must be erected that violate the height restrictions.

NGT calls for regular cleaning, monitoring of Sidhwan Canal banks

Ludhiana: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has firmly directed authorities concerned to ensure regular cleaning and monitoring of Sidhwan Canal banks. Disposing of a petition filed against solid waste dumping and pollution in the canal, the Tribunal emphasised that no garbage should be allowed to accumulate along the banks or be thrown into the water body. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Authorities have been instructed to carry out cleaning operations at regular intervals and to frame a standard operating procedure (SOP) within three months to ensure compliance. In its order, the NGT noted that although cleaning efforts were undertaken during pendency of the case—prompted by previous Tribunal directives—these actions were not sufficient. The material submitted by petitioners stressed the need for continuous monitoring and sustained action to prevent recurring pollution and encroachments. In its previous submissions, the MC claimed to have removed solid waste from the canal banks and taken steps to prevent future dumping. These included the installation of chain fencing along canal banks, awareness campaigns discouraging people from dumping puja offerings, and issuing challans to repeat offenders. The MC also stated that it had removed all secondary dumpsites and replaced them with compactors at transfer stations. A compactor site is currently under construction at the canal location, following approvals from the Punjab State Mandi Board. Additionally, the MC claimed to have developed a green belt along the canal after clearing encroachments, aiming to improve the ecological health and aesthetics of the area. The Tribunal has now mandated regular inspections to ensure that these measures do not just remain one-time efforts. CBSE: 75% attendance for students non-negotiable

Ranchi: City schools are now focusing on starting awareness campaigns for parents about the 75% compulsory school attendance rule for their children, in line with the latest directive issued by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In its standard operating procedure (SOP) for all affiliated institutes, CBSE emphasised strict adherence to attendance norms, especially for Class X and XII students appearing for board examinations. Experts said the SOP mandates that schools must inform students and their parents about the attendance policies and consequences from the beginning of an academic session. Moreover, schools are required to contact parents of irregular students frequently and formally notify them through post or email if the attendance drops below the required benchmark. The board may send inspection teams to conduct surprise checks in schools towards achieving this goal, the experts said. These checks will involve examination of attendance registers, which must bear the signatures of both class teachers and principals. Any discrepancy could result in the cancellation of a student's board exam or even revocation of the school's affiliation under the CBSE norms. While the 75% attendance rule remains non-negotiable, CBSE has listed exemptions for students facing genuine circumstances such as prolonged illness, bereavement, participation in national sports tournaments, or family emergencies. Students seeking relaxation must submit documentary proof to the CBSE regional office. As a step to inform the parents, schools used parent-teacher meetings (PTMs) as platforms to reinforce the importance of attendance and explain the possible consequences. "We counsel students about attendance requirements at the beginning of the session and during PTMs. If a student remains absent frequently, it is the teacher's responsibility to contact parents. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now We will continue to strictly adhere to the board's guidelines," said Rajesh Pillai, the principal of Kerali School. Similarly, the principal of Gurunanak Higher Secondary School, Sumit Kaur, said, "This is not a one-time effort; it's a continuous and ongoing process in our school. We regularly conduct awareness drives, counselling sessions, and follow-up measures."
