NEW DELHI: Seventeen-year-old Aryan Ansari was on the terrace of a building near Ahmedabad airport, casually filming planes to show his friends. What he ended up recording was the moment Air India's Dreamliner 787-8 crashed and burst into flames, footage that has since gone viral across the country.
'I came here on June 12. The plane was passing from very close, so I thought of shooting a video to show to my friends,' Aryan recalled. 'The plane went downwards, and I thought it was going to land as the airport was nearby. But then flames started shooting up, I saw that it had exploded. I was scared. I showed the video to my sister. I also told my father about it.'
Aryan was attempting to capture a regular flight in action, unaware that he would end up filming one of the deadliest aviation accidents in recent memory.
Flight AI 171, bound for London, crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad airport on the afternoon of June 12. Of the 242 people on board, only one person survived. Among the deceased was former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani.
Aryan's video, which shows the aircraft descending rapidly and then engulfed in flames, is being widely circulated and has become a crucial record of the final moments of the ill-fated flight.
Meanwhile, authorities have begun the grim task of identifying the charred remains of the victims. Ahmedabad Civil Hospital is relying on DNA and blood samples provided by relatives to match and release the bodies.
'The bodies of 31 DNAs have been matched. 12 bodies have been handed over to their respective family members,' said Dr Rajnish Patel, Additional Medical Superintendent of the hospital. 'We are waiting for others to come and collect the remains of their relatives.'

Air India Plane Crash: With US, UK Investigators In Ahmedabad, What Evidence Is Being Analysed?

Last Updated: Several angles are being explored as global investigators begin their analysis of what might have brought down AI-171 On Sunday, investigators from the United States and the United Kingdom visited the crash site of Air India Flight AI-171 in Ahmedabad as part of the ongoing probe into the June 12 disaster that killed at least 274 people, including passengers, crew, and residents on the ground. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner had crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad airport, leading to a massive international investigation effort. A 10-member team from the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) arrived in Ahmedabad on June 15 to examine the crash site and collaborate with Indian agencies. A team of aviation experts from the United Kingdom was also present on site. Both teams reviewed physical evidence and began early-stage coordination with India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). Investigators are examining multiple sources of data and footage to determine what caused the crash. The following evidence is currently under scrutiny: These materials are being synchronised to reconstruct the timeline of the crash and pinpoint possible anomalies. The possibility of a bird hit is being examined. However, identifying conclusive evidence has proven difficult. The crash led to a massive fire, killing several birds and stray animals at the site, which has complicated the task of recovering an identifiable carcass linked to engine ingestion. As of June 16, the bird strike theory remains one of several possibilities under consideration, not a confirmed cause. Why Is The Eyewitness Video Important? The video of the air crash, recorded by Aryan, is emerging as key evidence since it captures the position of the plane, the wings, and other visual details. The video, along with black box recordings and CCTV inputs, is being integrated into a detailed reconstruction of AI-171's final moments. Given the significance of the footage, Aryan has been questioned by the police, according to sources. He was reportedly asked what he saw before he began recording. Investigators consider him a key eyewitness to the crash. Locals in Aryan's neighbourhood told CNN-News18 that the sound made by the aircraft was unlike anything they had heard before, further prompting the probe team to speak with him for contextual insight. What Are The Next Steps In The Investigation? Following the site visit by US and UK experts, the AAIB is expected to proceed with: Funeral Of Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani to Be Held Today Three days after the crash, DNA analysis confirmed the identity of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani as one of the victims. Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi said the confirmation report came at 11:10 am on June 15. Rupani's mortal remains will be handed over to his family today at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, where they are expected to arrive by 11 am. After the completion of formal procedures, the body will be flown to Rajkot, with arrival expected between 12:30 pm and 2 pm. Before the final rites, his body will be kept for public viewing for an hour, followed by a funeral procession at 4 pm. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, BJP Gujarat president CR Patil, and other senior leaders are expected to attend. The Gujarat government has declared a one-day state mourning to honour the former chief minister. tags : Ahmedabad Plane Crash Location : New Delhi, India, India First Published: June 16, 2025, 11:20 IST News india Air India Plane Crash: With US, UK Investigators In Ahmedabad, What Evidence Is Being Analysed?

‘Please Stop': Cousin Of Air India Crash Victim Slams Social Media Exploitation

Last Updated: Kuldeep Bhatt, cousin of Air India crash victim Komi Vyas, criticised influencers for exploiting the tragedy, urging dignity and respect for victims and families. As India mourns the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad that claimed more than 250 lives, including those on ground, a grieving family member of one of the victims has lashed out at the insensitive exploitation of the disaster on social media, issuing a poignant and powerful appeal for dignity and respect in the face of unimaginable loss. Kuldeep Bhatt, cousin of Komi Vyas, who tragically lost her life along with her husband Prateek Joshi and their three children in the crash, has strongly criticised social media influencers and content creators for exploiting the tragedy, spreading false information, and sharing manipulated images and videos of the victims and their families, all in a bid to gain likes and views. 'The biggest problem is that our family, as well as the families of 270 others, are going through mental trauma. And social media influencers, in an attempt to increase their views, likes and followers, are misusing crash videos, posting doctored visuals," Bhatt said. Speaking about the specific instances where private family photographs were manipulated, Bhatt said, 'When Komi and others were leaving the flight, they took a selfie and posted it in our family group. Now that photo has gone viral. People have been generating videos from that photo. One such video has gone viral throughout India. It's AI-generated. The photo has been made into a fake video." Bhatt highlighted another distressing incident involving a photo of the couple's daughter, Miraya, which has been widely circulated on social media, causing immense pain to the family. 'Since yesterday, a photo has been circulating on social media that is hurting us a lot. The girl is Miraya, such a lovely girl. Now we have no idea about the DNA sample. It has not matched. On social media, people are claiming her body is burned. There are even videos circulating that her cremation is taking place." Bhatt appealed to content creators to act responsibly, emphasising that authorities and the family were willing to provide verified information and support. 'If you need information, reach out to the administration for official updates. We'll provide photos or videos if needed. But please, don't exploit this tragedy for your own entertainment or popularity," he requested. Referring to another false claim circulating online, he said, 'One video being shared says it shows children's bodies. But the symbols seen in the video are coffins of Hadap and Mohan Chaudhary, written in Chitra Akshar. It's from some other incident. This is what we have to face – more mental trauma." Bhatt condemned the insensitive and reckless content, questioning, 'What the hell are people doing?" He emphasised content creators' moral responsibility during a national tragedy and urged them to stop exploiting the incident, appealing for dignity and respect for the victims and their families. 'This is my request to you. Please stop all these things," he said. Flight AI171, a tragic accident that occurred on Thursday afternoon, resulted in the loss of 241 lives onboard and several others on the ground when the aircraft, bound for London, crashed into a medical hostel and canteen complex in the Meghaninagar area shortly after takeoff. Among the victims were Komi Vyas, her husband Prateek Joshi, and their three children: twin sons Pradyut and Nakul, and daughter Miraya.
