Five-star Drogheda dismiss non-league Crumlin United to begin title defence

Barry Landy reports from Sullivan & Lambe Park
DROGHEDA UNITED BEGAN their defence of the FAI Cup in style by hitting non-league Crumlin United for five at Sullivan & Lambe Park.
Whilst it was not the nine-goal hammering they dished out to Munster Senior League side Wilton United in last year's competition, it was no less comprehensive as Drogheda dominated from start to finish.
The home side did not score until the 45th minute – through a Conor Keeley header – but they pressed home their superiority after the break through goals from Thomas Oluwa, Josh Thomas, Darragh Markey and John O'Sullivan.
For Keeley, Thomas and O'Sullivan, theirs were first career FAI Cup goals.

It was an emotive night for Crumlin, with a minutes silence before the game dedicated in part to Nicole McNeill, the sister of player Ian, who passed away during the week. Ian took his place in the side at right back.
Kevin Doherty certainly demonstrated his intent by selecting a strong XI to take to the field against the non-league outfit. Drogheda do have a sparse looking July with no European trips in their calendar.
Thomas appeared as a substitute after almost five months out with a quad injury – scoring a penalty to put United two goals ahead – and O'Sullivan, on-loan from Shamrock Rovers ensured he had a debut to remember with a late goal of his own. It was a perfect night Keeley opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time – heading in Owen Lambe's corner – and Oluwa added it to just two minutes after the restart.
Had the game not been over as a contest by that point, there was no way back for Crumlin. Oluwa's strike was eye-catching – a piledriver from 20 yards, but replays suggested it look a touch on the way past overworked goalkeeper Morgan Daly. He was a standout performer for a team that were under the cosh throughout.
So too was winger Reece Kavanagh. He won a corner off James Bolger after one of his multiple darts into Drogheda territory in the first half.
He was fleet of foot throughout and while the visitors did not test the goalkeeper, it was likely anything they would muster might come from the 19-year-old.
Kavanagh had bagged two in Crumlin's 4-2 victory over Lucan United in round one but this was a much sterner test for them.

Thomas, on loan from Swansea City, was fouled by Anthony Kay and slotted the spot kick beyond the goalkeeper himself. Markey made it four from close range soon after.
O'Sullivan's 85th minute goal was well taken. Any one of several United men could have tested sub goalkeeper Ryan Donnelly. O'Sullivan did and beat him.
Doherty's team are enjoying a fine season and a return to the Aviva Stadium in November will surely be in their sights, whatever obstacles the draw throws up. For now though, a trip to Salou for a training camp next week awaits in their immediate future.
Drogheda United: Luke Dennison; Andrew Quinn, Conor Keeley (Aaron Harper Bailey 76), James Bolger; Owen Lambe, Ryan Brennan (Shane Farrell, 60), Luke Heeney (John O'Sullivan, 59), Conor Kane (Kieran Cruise, 70); Darragh Markey; Thomas Oluwa, Dare Kareem (Josh Thomas, 60).
Crumlin United: Morgan Daly (Ryan Donnelly, 83); Ian McNeill, Josh MacGabhann, Jack Funge, Aidan Friel (Kyle Murphy, 63); Jamie Whelan, Samuel O'Donoghue; Calum Bridgeman (Kane Byrne, 83), Ben Coughlan (Brian O'Meara, 63), Reece Kavanagh; Anthony Kay (Synnott Lawlor Brennan, 75).

Shamrock Rovers and St Patrick's Athletic ready for big European tests

Shamrock Rovers and St Patrick's Athletic are both in UEFA Conference League action this evening as they continue their chase of league stage football. The Hoops are in Kosovo for their third qualifying round first leg clash with Ballkani while St Pat's are at home as they welcome Turkish side Besiktas to Tallaght Stadium. Stephen Bradley's side have the easier tie on paper as they take on the runners-up from last season's Superleague campaign. Ballkani, like Rovers, have enjoyed success on the European stage, making it to the group stages of the Conference League during the 23/24 season. They bowed out of the Conference League at this stage of the competition last season, losing to Irish League side Larne on penalties after losing their home tie 1-0 and winning 1-0 away. A 4-2 home victory over Maltese side Floriana in the last round along with a 1-1 draw in the away leg was enough for Ballkani to progress but that home win was their first in six attempts, suggesting that Rovers can get at their hosts. Ballkani's record of conceding eight goals in those eight games will give Rovers belief that they can take a lead back to Tallaght, as will the form of striker Rory Gaffney who is in a rich vein of form and comes into the game off the back of a brace against Derry City at the weekend. Gaffney now has eight goals in the last 12 games, having missed much of the early stages of the season through injury and looks ready to make his mark in Europe. Graham Burke and midfielder Jack Byrne are both in line to start, having been rested against Derry City but Rovers are waiting on the fitness of defender Dan Cleary, who went off injured against the Candystripes. Gaffney admits that he doesn't know too much about Ballkani, who are currently going through their pre-season campaign, with the Kosovan Superleague running from August to May. "It's a step into the unknown," Gaffney said. "I don't think anyone has played a team from Kosovo before. I know a couple of their players were playing for Shkupi and Celje, teams we've come up against before. I'm sure they'll be good, they always are. "You don't know what you're going to get so there's always that bit of uncertainty in the first leg. "Over there, the weather is going to be warm. Thankfully, it's a grass pitch, not an astro this time. "We'd back ourselves that if we turn up, we'll give a good account of ourselves and be there or thereabouts. If we bring them back to Tallaght, we'll be a match for anyone." While Ballkani may be unfamiliar to many football fans, St Patrick's Athletic's opponents are worryingly familiar. The Saints take on a side that are European regulars when it comes to group stage football as Turkish outfit Besiktas are a side with a genuine European pedigree and with a Champions League winner at the helm. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took charge of Besiktas in January, his first managerial role since parting company with Manchester United in 2021, but despite only being seven month into the job, Solskjaer is coming under pressure. A fourth-place finish in the Turkish Super Lig saw Besiktas start their European campaign in the Europa League before a surprise 6-2 defeat on aggregate to Shakhtar Donetsk saw them drop into the Conference League. The winners of this tie will face either Larne or Portuguese side Santa Clara in the play-off round, with the losers exiting Europe for the season, so anything but a victory for the Turkish side would be considered a disaster. Solskjaer has a wealth of internationals at his disposal, with household names like Tammy Abraham, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Joao Mario and Gabriel Paulista all plying their trade in Istanbul. Oxlade-Chamberlain will miss the trip to Dublin, sidelined with a ligament issue, while midfielders Mustafa Hekimoglu and Can Keles are also out. Saints also have injury worries of their own as Zach Elbouzedi picked up a shoulder injury in the last round of the Conference League which will see him miss this rest of the season, while Sean Hoare and Romal Palmer are also out of action, along with Aidan Keena. With a growing injury list, the Saints have been forced to dip into the transfer market and have signed attacker Jordon Garrick on a short-term deal The winger was most recently with Forest Green Rovers and has made over 130 appearances in English League football, from his beginnings at Swansea City to spells at Swindon Town, Plymouth Argyle and Lincoln City. Garrick (27) has penned a four-month contract and trained with his new team-mates for the first time on Tuesday. Nevertheless, Kenny believes his side can cause a major upset. "We've played against some good European teams and put in performances over the last year," he said. "So we can take confidence from those experiences and take it into the game. "You have to draw on all your experiences, they come into play. But equally, it is a different challenge. We did play Basaksehir last year so the players have experience of playing a top Turkish team and gained some experience in that regard. "It would be one of the great victories in Irish football history if we could do it. It's a big challenge, Besiktas have a tremendous tradition and are an institution in Turkey."

Shamrock Rovers boss Bradley hails Roberto Lopes for going from ‘average midfielder' to ‘best defender in Ireland'

PICO THE BUNCH Shamrock Rovers boss Bradley hails Roberto Lopes for going from 'average midfielder' to 'best defender in Ireland' SHAMROCK ROVERS boss Stephen Bradley has hailed record-breaking Roberto 'Pico' Lopes as one of the reasons why the Hoops can believe in playing group-stage football again. Captain Lopes, 33, will make his 48th European appearance for Rovers this evening in Pristina against Ballkani in the Conference League — beating Ronan Finn's club Euro record. Bradley said: 'It's a credit to Pico. When he came here, he was an average midfield player, I would say. He would say. 'And he's turned into the best centre-back in the country for quite some time. He's become a full international. 'He's played at a really high level. He's been a big part of what we've done.' Advertisement Echoing his gaffer's view, centre-back Dan Cleary admitted he has been a long-time admirer of his defensive partner. Cleary said: 'I've known Pico probably since we were kids. I used to hang around with his brother in Crumlin. We used to be knocking around near his house as well. 'When I came here three years ago then I got to know him even better. 'We went to the same school as well. He's a top lad. Leads by example every day.' Advertisement Bradley insisted that the European experience Lopes and his side have — which includes two seasons in the Conference League group stage — makes him sure the Hoops can qualify again. But this season they are trying to navigate a trickier path as they must win every tie, compared to 2022 and 2024 when they were on the 'Champions path', giving them the safety net of dropping down from other competitions on both occasions. Shamrock Rovers snap up Northern Ireland Under-21s goal-getter as Stephen Bradley gives exciting verdict Bradley said: 'That's the beauty of the Champions path. And not having that, we knew it was going to be difficult. 'What I said at the start, our aim is to get into the group phase, the league phase. That's our aim.' Advertisement The Hoops will face either Larne or Portuguese outfit Santa Clara in a play-off if they can overcome the Kosovans.
