PIB Debunks Deepfake Video Falsely Attributing Fighter Jet Losses To Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh

A digitally manipulated video falsely portraying the Indian Air Force (IAF) Chief, Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, as admitting to the loss of six fighter jets and one Heron UAV during the May 7 air engagements has been officially debunked by the Press Information Bureau's (PIB) Fact Check unit on Monday. The video, which circulated widely on social media platforms, was confirmed to be an AI-generated deep-fake. It falsely claimed that the Air Chief Marshal acknowledged significant Indian losses during Operation Sindoor, India's retaliatory air campaign following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. In reality, Air Chief Marshal Singh made no such statement. In his verified public address at the 16th Air Chief Marshal LM Katre Memorial Lecture in Bengaluru on August 9, Air Chief Marshal Singh detailed India's successful air operations, confirming that the IAF had shot down five Pakistani fighter jets and one large airborne surveillance aircraft -- possibly an AWACS or ELINT platform -- at a distance of 300 km. He described it as "the largest ever recorded surface-to-air kill" by India. The full, unedited speech is available on YouTube, where Air Chief Marshal Singh can be seen discussing the strategic use of India's S-400 air defence system, precision strikes on Pakistani command centres in Muridke and Chaklala, and the destruction of radar sites and hangars housing F-16s. At no point does he mention any loss of Indian jets or UAVs. PIB Fact Check has categorically said that the viral clip is fabricated and part of a broader misinformation campaign by pro-Pakistan social media accounts. The agency urged citizens to rely on verified government sources and refrain from sharing unverified content that could compromise national security narratives. The top IAF officer told the gathering about the plan, war tactics and targets which India destroyed in Pakistan during Operation Sindoor in detail through a powerpoint presentation with satellite images to support his statements. The deep-fake video underscores the growing threat of AI-generated disinformation in defence and strategic domains, prompting renewed calls for digital vigilance and media literacy.

Why did Donald Trump deploy the National Guard in Washington?

US President Donald Trump declared a 'public safety emergency' in Washington, DC, on Monday. He announced that his administration would take control of the city's police department and deploy 800 members of the National Guard in the nation's Capital. President Donald Trump signed a directive for Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth to activate the National Guard.(AP) The announcement, made in a press conference flanked by top administration officials, is part of what Trump calls an effort to "take our capital back." Trump said he was declaring a public safety emergency and his administration would be removing homeless encampments. "We're going to take our capital back," Trump declared, adding he'd also be "getting rid of the slums." Why did Trump take over the Washington Police? Trump invoked Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act in an executive order to declare a "crime emergency" so his administration could take over the city's police force. He signed a directive for Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth to activate the National Guard. The president cast his actions as necessary to "rescue" Washington from a purported wave of lawlessness. Statistics show that violent crime shot up in 2023 but has been rapidly declining since. However, Trump offered no evidence that violent crime is surging in Washington. In fact, city statistics show the opposite: violent crime in DC is down 26% this year, following a spike in 2023. Homicides, robberies, and burglaries have all declined significantly, the AP reported. About 500 federal law enforcement officers are being tasked with deploying throughout the nation's Capital as part of Trump's effort to combat crime, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. According to the Army, Guard troops will be deployed under Title 32, or 'federal-state status' authority. That means the troops can conduct law enforcement activities on the streets of the nation's capital — though, at the moment, that doesn't appear to be the plan. Attorney General Pam Bondi will assume responsibility for Washington's metro police department, Trump said, as he also railed against potholes and graffiti in the city and called them 'embarrassing.' The president did not provide a timeline for the control of the police department, but he's limited to 30 days under statute.

Operation Sindoor, facts After the Indian Air Force chief made a statement that India 'took down six Pakistani aircraft during Operation Sindoor' (Front page, August 10), it is all the more necessary for the government to be frank about the losses incurred by India. This disclosure will only prove how far our forces were able to target Pakistani territory to destroy terror infrastructure. Citizens have a right to know how well the defence forces are operating. V. Padmanabhan, Bengaluru Enable peace The deep tensions between Israel and Palestine can be sorted out if some lead nations apply their minds. It is most heart-rending to read about the terrible state of Gaza. As a nonagenarian, I recall how the Jews were murdered by Adolf Hitler. Is Benjamin Netanyahu thinking along these lines? I hope not. Mani Nataraajan, Chennai Court on stray dogs The order of the Supreme Court directing the Delhi government to move stray dogs to shelter homes is one that must be made applicable across the country. Stray dogs are becoming a serious threat to life. In Kerala alone, there have been numerous instances of people being attacked and left seriously injured. There is also the grave danger of rabies. If the extent of the Court order widens, governments and local bodies will need to allocate adequate resources to establish proper shelter homes for these animals and for the recurrent expenditure of feeding them. While we talk about the responsibility of governments in containing the stray dog menace, we need to understand that the citizens too have to play their role. Stray dogs live in large numbers in places where food is available. So, people need to keep their surroundings clean. Unnikrishnan S. Menon, Chennai
