
Google facing £25 bn legal claim in UK over abuse of search ad market

LONDON (dpa)Google is facing a £25 billion ($33.7 billion) legal claim in the UK, accusing the tech giant of abusing its dominant position in the online search advertising market.The claims that Google's agreements with mobile device manufacturers to make Google Search the default search engine on devices has prices pushed up for UK advertisers.The claim is being led by Roger Kaye KC, a former deputy High Court judge, and has been filed at the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT), where it alleges Google's unlawful conduct has impacted between 500,000 and 1.5 million UK advertisers, resulting in "excessive and unfair prices" for advertising.It is seeking compensation for all advertisers who paid Google for search advertising from January 1, 2011 until now, estimating an aggregated award of up to £25 billion.The claim argues that Google's agreements with phone manufacturers and network operators to make Google's search engine the default option on their products meant it has been able to maintain a degree of domination in the significant search market, and as a result charge higher prices.The US tech giant is already facing a similar legal claim at CAT over its search advertising business, and a judge in the US ruled last year that it is running a monopoly in search.
The company is now fighting proposals t hat it could be required to break up its digital empire and sell off parts of its business, such as its Chrome web browser, as part of the remedies in that case. Kaye said: 'This case marks a significant step in re-establishing a fair and competitive landscape for all advertisers.'The unlawful conduct has already been proven by both the European Commission and a US court, and it is time that all affected UK advertisers are duly compensated for the financial repercussions to their business.'A Google spokesperson said: 'These types of meritless claims are brought by lawyers seeking profit and bring little-to-no benefit to those they represent.
"Consumers and advertisers use Google because it's helpful, not because there are no alternatives."

As they lose out on traffic, we're seeing publishers lean into subscriptions and paid AI licensing deals to bolster revenue," Emarketer analyst Minda Smiley said. AI search ad spending is expected to constitute nearly 1% of total search ad spending this year and 13.6% by 2029 in the U.S., according to Emarketer. Sectors such as financial services, technology, telecom, and healthcare are embracing AI as they are seeing clear advantages in using the technology to enhance their ad strategies, while the retail industry's adoption is slow, the report said. Google recently announced the expansion of its AI-powered search capabilities into the consumer packaged goods sector through enhancements in Google Shopping. Meta and Yandex Exploited Android Loophole to Track Users Across Browsers and Apps
Meta and Yandex have been found to exploit a loophole in Android's architecture, enabling them to de-anonymize users' web browsing activities by linking them to persistent app identities. This tracking method bypasses standard privacy protections, including incognito mode and cookie clearing, raising significant concerns about user privacy. Researchers from Radboud University, IMDEA Networks, and KU Leuven discovered that Meta's Pixel and Yandex's Metrica tracking scripts, embedded in millions of websites, communicate with their respective Android apps via the device's localhost interface. This communication allows the apps to receive browsing data directly from the browser, effectively linking web activity to user identities within the apps. The tracking mechanism operates by having the browser-based scripts send data to specific ports on the localhost interface, where the apps are listening. For instance, Meta's apps listen on UDP ports 12580–12585, while Yandex's apps use ports 29009, 29010, 30102, and 30103. This setup enables the apps to collect browsing data, including cookies and metadata, even when users employ privacy measures like incognito mode or VPNs. ADVERTISEMENT Meta began implementing this method in September 2024, while Yandex has utilized a similar approach since 2017. The widespread use of Meta Pixel and Yandex Metrica—estimated to be present on 5.8 million and 3 million websites respectively—suggests that a vast number of Android users could be affected. The discovery has prompted responses from major browser developers. Google has initiated an investigation and is working on mitigations to prevent such tracking techniques. Mozilla is also developing solutions to protect Firefox users on Android from this invasive tracking.
