Enid Blyton book collector 'gobsmacked' to find notes by wife

BBC News20-06-2025
A book collector was "completely gobsmacked" to find a charity shop novel contained a note written 50 years ago by his wife.Steph Mills was rearranging his Enid Blyton collection at home in Hockley, Essex, when he discovered the handwritten message by spouse Karen. The book was given away by his mother-in-law in the 1970s and Mr Mills said it was a "mind-blowing" coincidence to unknowingly buy it."I kept rereading it and thought 'This cannot be, surely?'," said the 67-year-old.
The note gave details of Mrs Mills' life as a child in Staffordshire - when she had not met Mr Mills - including details of family members and old addresses.Mr Mills purchased The Naughtiest Girl Again book in Rayleigh, more than 160 miles (257km) away from where his mother-in-law handed it in at a local fete. But he only realised what it contained during a recent tidy-up of his bookshelf.
"I opened the front cover and I was shocked to see my brother-in-law's name in it," he explained. "It included an address that I'd heard my wife mention and I just couldn't believe it."Mr Mills, who owns about 50 Enid Blyton novels, then showed his 60-year-old wife, who turned the page and found the note she penned."She was equally shocked," he continued. "It was actually quite a cute thing to look at."
'Extraordinary'
The surprise did not end there for the couple, however. They went on to discover two other novels on his bookshelf also featured annotations by his wife.
"We both sat there really not quite sure how to handle it because this was just extraordinary," Mr Mills said."They look nice on the shelf and it gives me a nice warm feeling to know I've got them."The retired civil servant said realising he and Mrs Mills shared the same love of books as children "bridges the two of us even closer".He added: "There's probably more out there, so it's set me on another quest."

Mum leaves people gobsmacked after sharing her ‘diabetes inducing' groceries, including 32 pizzas & 14 blocks of cheese

A MUM has been brutally slammed after sharing her grocery haul which included 32 pizzas and more than a dozen blocks of cheese. Mother-of-three, only known as @ boymomx3_b, came under fire after she showed off the mega pile of food she'd snapped up for her brood. 2 The 37-year-old, who works full time, explained that this food was meant to be for her three boys, as well as her parents who've moved in with her. The mother, from North Carolina, said she had visited four stores to get all the goodies to stock up her fridge and pantry with. As well as purchasing two large boxes of mini brownies, the US-based mum bought, a huge pack of Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal, a big box of Oatmeal Cream Pies, some cereal bars, tea, a staggering five big bags of frozen fries, she shared in the now-viral clip. Up until the next grocery trip, the family will also be devouring two big jars of mayonnaise, a whopping 14 blocks of different cheeses, nine large bottles of sugary fizzy drinks, several packs of Oreos and more sugary cereal. On top of this, the mother also left the stores with a staggering 32 frozen pizzas - which almost towered over her in the video. Meanwhile, in the fresh produce section, she also got two cucumbers, lettuce, grapes, some bananas and a huge watermelon. ''We took all they had,'' the mum said, revealing she cleared the frozen aisle from the popular dish. Leaving TikTokers horrified with her monster haul, the mum also totalled up how much the shopping trip had cost her. ''All of that together is $476.68 today [£352.33]. ''A little bit less than last time but the crazy thing is that we left a lot of the stuff off the list this time because we didn't run out.'' I'll never step foot in a supermarket to do my food shop again The mum-of-three went on in the caption: ''Why do groceries have to cost so much.'' But while the TikToker may have been horrified by how much she had spend, viewers were left gobsmacked by another aspect - the 'diabetes-inducing' diet she was feeding her brood with. The video, which has racked up more than 5million views, has sparked backlash, with thousands slamming the boy mum. One said: ''NINEEEE bottles of soda THIRTY TWOO pizzas and like two cucumbers is wild.'' Someone else was just as stunned, writing: ''Diabetes is around the corner.'' ''i cannot imagine living like this,'' another chimed in. ''2 cucumbers, 1 head of lettuce, 1 watermelon, 1 bag of grapes, 1 bunch of bananas. You spent nearly $500 on groceries, and only bought 6 pieces of fresh produce,'' a fourth wrote. Hitting back at the haters, the mum had a simple message: ''Don't watch then.''

EastEnders couple get back together after SIXTEEN years apart – but there's a catch

A COUPLE on EastEnders have got back together after sixteen years. However, it may not be all plain sailing and BBC One viewers are absolutely hooked. 6 6 It has been a rocky few months for the Panesar family in Albert Square as they have come under fire from all sides. At the start of the summer, Bernie Taylor (Clair Norris) swindled Suki (Balvinder Sopal) out of money before departing Walford. She threatened to reveal her role in the killing of her brother Keanu, before Avani (Aaliyah James) almost destroyed the family with her accidental pregnancy. However, her parents are seemingly on the verge of getting back together in a huge twist, leaving EastEnders fans stunned. In tonight's edition of the show, Ravi (Aaron Thiara) asked hsi ex-partner Priya (Sophie Khan-Levy) if the pair should get back together. They were last in a relationship when they welcomed Avani into the world as a baby, but at 16-years-old she is now grown up. In a shock move, Priya actually agreed to rekindle their relationship after Ravi admitted: "The kids, us, that's all that really matters to me." However, she sets some rules in place which might be difficult for Ravi to follow. She agrees to get back together as long as he puts a stop to his illegal activities and dodgy dealings. Priya also suggests that the duo should keep their romance a secret for the time being. EastEnders airs shock exit as vile truth about Suki Panesar is exposed A few fans have taken to social media as they remain sceptical that the couple will work out in the long-term. Writing on X - formerly known as Twitter - one fan commented: "Am I the only one who doesn't like Ravi and Priya together.. I feel like their more good friends then lovers." As a second stated: "If Ravi fumbles both Denise and Priya within the space of a year I will in fact be laughing at him." However, more long-time viewers are absolutely delighted that the duo have rekindled the romance. EastEnders stars who QUIT MICHELLE Collins has seen her second EastEnders stint boost her bank balance. Yet what stars have quit this year? The Sun exclusively reported how Michelle, 62, was down to £20,000 in her company accounts when she agreed to a shock back-from-the-dead return to Albert Square last year. Her character, Cindy Beale, was presumed dead off-camera in 1998. Yet what about the 2024 exits? Earlier this summer, loyal soap fans appeared to note how Stevie Mitchell had "quit" the long-running series. It came after Alan Ford enjoyed just six-months on-screen. Bobby Beale actor Clay Milner Russell also left this year after five years in Walford. Fans also feared Martin Fowler actor James Bye would "quit out of boredom" over recent storylines. Additionally, a host of stars have quit the BBC soap for Hollywood fame. One of the most successful stars to come from the BBC One soap is Rob Kazinsky. He played Stacey Slater's brother Sean Slater from 2006 to 2009, he has starred in Hollywood blockbusters Pacific Rim and Captain Marvel. Ben Hardy, who quit EastEnders as Bobby Beale almost a decade ago, went on to break Hollywood the following year, when he starred as Archangel in X-Men: Apocalypse. Since then, he has played Roger Taylor in Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, and he starred in Michael Bay 's Netflix movie 6 Underground. Michelle Ryan played Zoe Slater until 2005. She starred as the lead in short-lived American series Bionic Woman from 2007 to 2008. A third wrote: "Priya & Ravi have the potential to be the greatest couple the square has ever seen." While someone else gushed: "Priya and Ravi getting back together automatically gives it [the new era] extra points!!" And a fifth added: "Rooting for Ravi and Priya." 6 6 6 6
