
Reckitt eyes new options to advance Air Wick unit sale, sources say
LONDON, June 3 (Reuters) - Britain's Reckitt (RKT.L), opens new tab is considering new options to advance a sale of its Essential Home business, home to Air Wick fresheners and Cillit Bang cleaners, after bids came in below expectations, two people with knowledge of the process said.
The company still plans to pursue a sale, the people said, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks are private. Private equity firm Advent remains in talks for the assets, one of the people and a third person said.
Reckitt, which also makes Mucinex cold medication and Durex condoms, said in July it was looking to offload a portfolio of homecare brands by the end of 2025.
The proposed sale comes at a challenging time for businesses with factories around the world as they navigate U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs, which are roiling supply chains, boosting costs and dampening shopper sentiment.
Reckitt could keep a stake in the business or structure a sale another way to bridge a gap in valuations, one of the people said, adding that some of the bids came in below its hopes of over 4 billion pounds ($5.4 billion).
Reuters could not determine if other bidders remained in the process.
Reckitt and Advent declined to comment.
Bankers and CEOs have hit the brakes on mergers and acquisitions since Trump launched his trade war, with fewer deals getting signed than during the bleakest days of the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2008-2009 global financial crisis.
Reckitt said in April that it was "continuing to progress" the sale of the Essential Home business but that market conditions might affect the time frame.
Consumer staples companies are considered relatively resilient to economic downturns, but big brands like Reckitt, P&G (PG.N), opens new tab and Unilever (ULVR.L), opens new tab increasingly face competition from cheaper private label brands that gained popularity during the pandemic.
Reckitt's Essential Home business has struggled for several quarters, with sales falling 7% in the first quarter of this year to 482 million pounds, about 13% of total revenue for the quarter.
Reckitt has been undergoing a turnaround under CEO Kris Licht, who has sought to reassure shareholders concerned about the strength of the company's brands in North America and Europe, where consumer confidence has been dwindling.

I received an interesting E-mail from a reader last week, following up on a recent long-term report on the single-motor Volvo EC40 I'm currently driving. It turns out that our reader, a keen petrolhead called Derek Dunthorne, is running the twin-motor version of the Volvo EC40, and although it's in a different specification to mine and something of an upgrade, we share many similar opinions. He initially considered the smaller and newer EX30, but found he preferred the more conventional driver displays of the EC40, which is something I happen to agree with. It also turns out that we are even getting the same miles per kWh. But the really interesting information from Derek was beyond even what our long-term reports can offer. It transpires that he bought the car at six months old with 1,800 miles on the clock for a discount of 33 per cent on the new price and a three per cent PCP (to hedge against depreciation). He was impressed with Volvo's used car 30-day exchange policy, and as it transpired that was a good choice, because he actually ended up using it. Unhappy with his first car for a number of reasons, he returned it and the company refunded his money and allowed him to choose another, which he now loves. In terms of running costs, his are a fraction of mine. He uses the Octopus Energy Intelligent Go tariff that enables him to charge overnight for 7.0p per kWh. This means he has spent around £120 on electricity in 12 months and about 4,000 miles. Like many, he has never needed to use public charging, with all his journeys having been no longer than the 200 miles that the Volvo can comfortably complete. In the digital era, we often hear about information overload, but Derek's E-mail and the context of his purchase and ongoing experience really brought home the power of information for car buyers. Landlord wants permission for six-bedroom bedsit in Rhyl
A landlord has applied for planning permission for a house of multiple occupation (HMO) in Rhyl. Majid Khan, of London-based Genics Investment, has applied to Denbighshire County Council's planning department, seeking permission for a change of use of 15 Chester Street from a dwelling to six-bedroom HMO. According to the application, the HMO is already in use but is not registered with Denbighshire County Council. The applicant says the building has been in continuous use as a HMO for more than ten years. The applicant has supplied a list of tenancy agreements, housing benefit details, and a statement from the previous landlord as 'evidence' of the above. A planning statement issued on behalf of Mr Khan reads: 'The property was purchased in 1996 for a HMO use, and the previous landlord did submit a planning application in (the) late 90s (or) early 2000s, but this was not registered formally on the council's records. HMOs are carefully regulated by some councils, especially in seaside towns, which may have a greater number of large empty properties. Rhyl councillor Brian Jones said he believed the town already had enough HMOs. 'In my opinion, Rhyl has more than enough HMOs,' he said. 'When Rhyl is compared to other towns in Denbighshire, Rhyl has by far the highest number. We have enough of them. We certainly don't need any more.' Denbighshire defines a HMO as a property rented to 'at least three people who are not from the same household, such as a family'. A HMO property in Denbigh, Llangollen, Prestatyn and Rhyl must have a licence if there are three or more tenants living there and: They form more than one household, with or without shared facilities (bathroom and kitchen) They form more than one fully self-contained household, but do not meet the 1991 Building Regulations and where less than two-thirds of the self-contained flats are owner occupied. Mitie agrees £366m deal to buy Lord Ashcroft-founded firm Marlowe
Outsourcing firm Mitie has agreed a takeover of Lord Ashcroft-founded specialist services firm Marlowe in a deal worth around £366 million. Under the terms of the cash-and-shares deal, Mitie will pay 466p per Marlowe share. Mitie said it hopes to cut costs by £30 million a year across the combined group after the takeover. Marlowe is a provider of fire safety services, which is listed on the London's Aim junior market, and employs around 3,000 workers. FTSE 250-listed Mitie employs about 72,000 staff in areas from cleaning and security to maintenance. Phil Bentley, chief executive of Mitie, said: 'Adding Marlowe's circa 3,000 highly respected colleagues to Mitie's capabilities and providing access to Mitie's clients will generate significant revenue growth opportunities as well as immediate cost efficiencies. 'We are excited about the next chapter in Mitie's history to become a leading facilities compliance provider.' Lord Ashcroft, interim non-executive chairman of Marlowe, added: 'The acquisition represents excellent value for Marlowe shareholders.' 'I have been consistent since taking up the role of interim chairman in June 2024 that my aim was to maximise shareholder returns and the acquisition will be the final piece in that jigsaw,' he said. Lord Ashcroft – a former deputy chairman of the Conservative Party – co-founded Marlowe with Alex Dacre, its former chief executive. He became non-executive chairman on an interim basis when Mr Dacre left in June last year. He is the latest shareholder in Marlowe, with an 18.9% stake. In Mitie's full year figures also out on Thursday, it reported an 11% rise in underlying operating profits to £234 million for the year to March 31. But statutory pre-tax profits fell to £145.4 million from £156.3 million the previous year.
