President Trump's latest pardons include reality TV stars, Capitol rioters, and convicted sheriff
WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — President Donald Trump's recent wave of pardons is drawing national attention and sparking fresh debate.
Among the latest to receive clemency are reality TV stars Todd and Julie Chrisley, convicted for bank fraud, and several individuals jailed for their roles in the January 6 Capitol riot.
On Tuesday, Trump personally called the Chrisleys' children to inform them their parents would be released. The couple's daughter had endorsed Trump during last year's Republican National Convention.
'I heard they're terrific,' the president said of the family.
Meanwhile, Trump has confirmed he is considering pardons for Barry Croft Jr. and Adam Fox—two men found guilty in 2022 of plotting to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in 2020.
At the time, authorities said the plan was an attempt to incite civil war in the lead-up to the election. Trump expressed doubts about the verdict, calling it 'somewhat of a railroad job' and adding, 'it's been brought to my attention.'
Since his return to office, Trump has issued dozens of pardons, including for people convicted in connection to the January 6 Capitol attack. The decision has drawn sharp criticism from Democrats, who accuse the president of abusing his clemency powers.
One particularly controversial pardon was for Virginia Sheriff Scott Jenkins. A jury convicted Jenkins last year of accepting more than $75,000 in bribes, and he was sentenced to ten years in March.
Trump defended the move, saying Jenkins was a victim of what he called an 'overzealous Biden Department of Justice.'
Senator Mark Warner of Virginia called the pardon 'a slap in the face.'
Gov. Whitmer has made two public appearances alongside President Trump since his return to the White House. Her office has not responded to a request for comment.
Although more people were implicated in the Whitmer kidnapping plot, only Croft and Fox received federal sentences, which makes them eligible for presidential pardons. Trump has not indicated when a final decision on their cases will be made.
In a statement, Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) said, 'I'm deeply disturbed President Trump is considering pardoning the men convicted of conspiring to kidnap Governor Whitmer. I would want anyone who tried to hurt the president, or worse, tried to assassinate him, to be held accountable. Those who tried to harm the governor must be held accountable as well, not released to do further harm to her or anyone else.'
As Trump continues to wield his pardon powers, critics argue it's part of a broader effort to reward political allies and undermine institutions. Supporters claim he is correcting what they see as political overreach by the previous administration.

Yeah, it's if you look at those two characters, they basically show you how divided the country is. Two different versions of Poland, one with just Trzaskowski, who is who's very much pro-European. He's very friendly with the government and actually he's a candidate of the government. So government is hoping that by having him as a president, it will be easier for them to push forward with with a pro-EU agenda. On the other hand, Nawrocki is is very conservative. He's the representative of the opposition and he also got MAGA endorsement just this week. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was in in Poland at CPAC conference, and she said, I'm here on behalf of President Trump and Karol Nawrocki should be your president. So so he's coming as this kind of who's who's railing against migration. He's very much skeptical of climate change. And he's standing for for traditional values, as he puts them. So, you know, you basically have two visions of Poland on the ballot this Sunday. Okay. So hugely consequential for Europe. Maybe another test of Trump's influence in Europe. But let's also just think about the market reaction, because so far, Poland's had this world beating rally this year. How much is this going to put that to the test? Indeed, the Polish assets, both stocks and bonds, but also the currency, has been on a tear. And this was basically a result of the fact that when when the current government came to power in 2023, the expectations were they were reversed. It was those times of populist government where, you know, Poland had for the past eight years and they will introduce reforms, they will get power to Poland, closer to to to the EU mainstream. And also Poland has has really envious metrics when it comes to the economy. It's one of the fastest growing in in the EU. So there were expectations that things will only get better for the Polish economy, for for where it's going next. And that's where we saw the the the markets reacting accordingly. Now, the big question now is Poland also has a huge deficit, which it also has a lot to spend on on defense. So the question is, if if the government doesn't get the president that they want that that will be working with them. It may put all these plans for reforms to test and put in question.

5 bodies appearing to be missing musicians of Mexican regional music band found near Texas border
CIUDAD VICTORIA, Mexico -- Five bodies that appeared to be members of a Mexican regional music group who had gone missing were found in the northern city of Reynosa, along the Texas border, authorities said on Thursday. The musicians from the band Grupo Fugitivo, which played at parties and local dances in the region, had been reported missing since Sunday. The genre they played – Mexican regional music, which encapsulates a wide range of styles including corridos and cumbia – has in recent years gained a spotlight as it's entered a sort of international musical renaissance. Young artists have mixed the classic genre with trap and sometimes pay homage to leaders of drug cartels, often portrayed as Robin Hood-type figures. While it was not immediately clear if the group played such songs, other artists have faced death threats by cartels, while others have had their visas stripped by the United States under accusations by the Trump administration that they were glorifying criminal violence. Few details were released about where the bodies were found and in what conditions, but Tamaulipas state prosecutors had been investigating the case, according to a statement by state security officials. The last time they had communicated with their families was Sunday night, when they said they were going to a venue where they were hired to play. After that, nothing else was heard of them. Officials said the bodies shared characteristics of artists, though did not provide further detail. Their disappearance caused an uproar in Tamaulipas, a state long eclipsed by cartel warfare. Their families reported the disappearances, called on the public for support and people took to the streets in protest. On Wednesday, protesters blocked the international bridge connecting Reynosa and Pharr, Texas, later going to a local cathedral to pray and make offerings to the disappeared.
