RTM unveils mega-budget ‘Srikandi' drama based on classic Malay literature, airing on Merdeka night (VIDEO)
KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 — Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), in collaboration with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), has produced the epic supertele entitled 'Srikandi' to be aired on Aug 31, in conjunction with the Independence Month celebrations.
Its director-general (DG) of Broadcasting, Datuk Suhaimi Sulaiman said that the special feature inspired by the classic masterpiece 'Syair Siti Zubaidah Perang China,' published by DBP with the support of the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) and Pahang State Secretary's Office, successfully produced a quality script.
'After more than six months of hard work since last October, including over a month of filming at various locations around Pahang, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, this project is now in the final phase of production. This drama is the first special epic story by RTM produced on a mega scale and using a film format with the assistance of FINAS.
'The film set of 'Srikandi' highlights historical locations and natural beauty, especially in Pahang, such as Jerantut, Kuala Tahan, Sungai Lembing, Kuantan and Pulau Tioman,' he said during a special meet-and-greet session for the film at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (PBAKL) 2025 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) here today.
Also present at the event were the DBP DG Dr. Hazami Jahari, 'Srikandi' director Wan Mohd Afzam Wan Daud, and some of the film's cast.
Suhaimi said this feature is not just entertainment but also an intellectual work that uses modern technology to create a cinematic impact.
He said the 'Srikandi' script is targeted for competition in film festivals and to be marketed internationally.
Meanwhile, Wan Mohd Afzam said the drama, which combines elements of reality and fiction from the pre-16th century era, highlights the spirit of struggle and wisdom of Malay women through the lead character Siti Zubaidah.
'This special tale narrates the determination of Siti Zubaidah as a resilient woman in saving her husband, Sultan Zainal Abidin, from being kidnapped by pirates despite being heavily pregnant,' he also said.
Besides Farali Khan, who plays Siti Zubaidah, the drama is also supported by Datuk Fauziah Nawi, Fauziah Latiff, Luqman Hafidz, Catriona Ross, Che Kem and Khatijah Tan among others, and it will be aired on Aug 31 at 9 pm over TV2 and RTMKlik. — Bernama

Drowsy driver loses control, express bus with 25 passengers overturns into drain on North-South Expressway
IPOH, June 4 — An express bus carrying 25 passengers overturned into a drain after the driver lost control of the vehicle at Kilometre 342.2 of the North-South Expressway (southbound) yesterday. Tapah District Police chief Supt Johari Yahya said police received a report on the crash at 1pm while the bus was en route from Penang to the Southern Integrated Terminal (TBS) in Kuala Lumpur. 'Investigations revealed that the driver lost control of the vehicle due to drowsiness (micro sleep). The bus sustained damage to the front, rear, left, and right sides after veering off into a drain on the left side of the road. 'Following that, the 31-year-old driver and all 25 passengers managed to exit the bus with assistance from members of the public,' he said when contacted today. He added that the driver was unharmed in the incident. 'Three passengers who sustained minor injuries are receiving treatment at the Slim River Hospital in the green zone, while the remaining 22 passengers continued their journey on a replacement bus,' he said. Johari said further investigations revealed the bus driver tested negative for drugs, and no arrests had been made so far. 'Checks on the bus also confirmed its insurance is valid until March next year. The case is being investigated under Rule 10 of LN 166/59 for causing minor injuries,' he added. — Bernama

‘Datuk Seri' arrested for allegedly assaulting woman with pistol grip in George Town
GEORGE TOWN, June 4 — A local man with the title Datuk Seri has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a 28-year-old female sales assistant with a pistol grip during an incident on Jalan Kelawei. According to Buletin TV3 (TV3), the 41-year-old suspect was detained after surrendering himself at the Northeast District Police Headquarters (IPD) yesterday. North-east district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad told TV3 that the incident, which occurred around 2.20am the day before, is believed to have stemmed from a misunderstanding between the suspect and the victim. 'The victim sustained serious injuries to the nose and eye after being struck by the suspect with an object resembling a pistol grip. Police have seized a pistol, a magazine, and a firearm licence book along with some bullets. 'The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code and Section 34 of the Arms Act 1960,' he was quoted as saying. TV3 reported that the incident occurred while the victim and two friends were en route to Tanjung Tokong. The car she was driving veered into the middle lane, but the victim continued driving as usual. She then realised that her car was being followed by a black Mercedes-Benz before it blocked her path in front of a petrol station on Jalan Kelawei. The suspect then allegedly inserted a shiny gold-coloured pistol into the victim's mouth, struck her twice on the left cheek with the pistol grip, and repeatedly punched her in the face with his hands, causing a broken nose and bruising around her left eye. The victim later received treatment at Penang General Hospital (HPP) before lodging a police report. The suspect was also alleged to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

Man suspected of murdering wife remanded in Johor
The man allegedly slashed his 34-year-old wife to death in a residential area in Bukit Gambir. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : An unemployed man suspected of killing his wife with a vegetable knife before setting several cars on fire at Taman Cahaya, Bukit Gambir in Johor, has been remanded for seven days. Berita Harian reported that magistrate Lee Kim Keat allowed the police's application today to remand the 33-year-old in an investigation under Sections 302 and 435 of the Penal Code for murder and mischief by fire. In the Monday evening incident, the man allegedly slashed his 34-year-old wife, who worked as a clerk, to death in a residential area in Bukit Gambir. He then fled to his in-laws' house in Kampung Durian Chondong where he set several vehicles on fire. The New Straits Times reported that he walked into the Bukit Gambir police station at around 7am yesterday and told the cops he had slashed his wife and committed arson. According to the report, police found the woman's body lying under a blanket with neck injuries and a blood-stained knife in the living room. The man, who was arrested at his home, tested negative for drugs.
