'Star Wars: Episode V — The Empire Strikes Back' is 45 years old today – and Billy Dee Williams couldn't be prouder to have starred in such a ground-breaking piece of cinema
'Working on 'The Empire Strikes Back' was like stepping into a dream — an adventure in every sense,' the 88-year-old actor who played Lando Calrissian exclusively told The Post.

'George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, and the entire team created a world so rich and real that it was impossible not to get swept away,' Williams added. 'I knew it was something special even then, but none of us could have predicted the lasting impact it would have.'

Williams made his 'Star Wars' debut in the 1980 film directed by Kershner (who died in 2010) with a story by Lucas, 81.
Upon its release, 'The Empire Strikes Back' got mixed reviews from critics and fans, many of whom complained about the film's dark tone that culminated in the bad guys winning in the end.

But after many years, 'The Empire Strikes Back' became universally considered the best 'Star Wars' movie ever.

'Forty-five years later, 'The Empire Strikes Back' still resonates because it's not just about battles and starships — it's about friendship, sacrifice, and hope,' Williams told The Post. 'To be part of a story that has inspired generations is a humbling honor. I feel the love from fans every day, and it never gets old.'

'Lando was, and still is, a trailblazer,' said Williams. 'He showed audiences that charm, complexity, and courage could live in one man.'

Editor Paul Hirsch exclusively told The Post that working on the film is still one of his greatest achievements in his career.
'I was on the picture for 14 months, during which time I was on location in London and in Marin County, where my son was born,' said Hirsch, who wrote about 'The Empire Strikes Back' in his 2019 book 'A Long Time Ago in a Cutting Room Far, Far Away.'

'I had innumerable memorable experiences during that time,' Hirsch added, 'so to pick out a single memory would be impossible.'

Despite its success, 'The Empire Strikes Back' infamously faced numerous production difficulties.

Additionally, several actors got hurt on set including Mark Hamill, who was in a severe car accident that caused facial injuries. That forced the film's creators to include a scene where Luke Skywalker is attacked by a Wampa on Hoth.

There were also financing problems as the film's initial budget of $8 million rose to over $30 million. The movie ultimately made over $540 million at the worldwide box office.

Hirsch told The Post that his job as editor wasn't impacted by the production issues.
Speaking about the film's legacy, Hirsch said, 'The initial release of a film is like its birth. Some grow up and lead long lives and achieve success later on. I have worked on a few that were total flops at first, but are now considered cult classics.'

In a rare interview with StarWars.com in 2020, Lucas looked back on making 'The Empire Strikes Back.'
'It wasn't the most fun movie to make, but it was definitely a rewarding film,' he said. 'It turned out well. I learned some things.'

The horse Bobby Flay couldn't sell has long-shot Belmont Stakes dream
SARATOGA SPRINGS — At 15-1 odds, Crudo is a long shot to outrun Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty and Preakness champion Journalism to the wire in Saturday's Belmont Stakes at Saratoga. One could argue, however, that this outcome would be no more of a surprise than the circumstances that led Crudo into the Triple Crown race in the first place for owners Bobby Flay and Jimmy Ventura and Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher. 'Jimmy and I were going to buy him as a pinhook proposition — we bought him as a weanling and we were going to sell him as a yearling. We brought him to the Saratoga [Fasig-Tipton] sale, and he didn't sell, so we kept him,' Flay, the chef, restaurant magnate and Food Network star told The Post early Friday morning before visiting Crudo. 'I don't usually race colts. I usually race fillies only. But I have him, so he's racing, and he's turned out to have talent,' Flay continued. 'The Belmont Stakes is New York's most important race and as a New Yorker, it's clearly important to me.' 3 Celebrity chef Bobby Flay is pictured next to Crudo on June 6. Jason Szenes for the NY Post Flay, 60, says he's been watching horse racing since his teenage years when he and his friends from the Yorkville neighborhood in upper Manhattan would cut school and take the A train to Aqueduct. The Belmont Stakes has long been a staple of Flay's social calendar. 'I go to the Belmont every year. I usually take 20-30 people to Belmont Park and make a day out of it,' Flay said. 'It's become a tradition where I have people over to my house for brunch, everyone comes dressed in their racing gear — suits, summer dresses, hats. I feed them in the morning and then put everyone in cars and we go to Belmont and we have a day.' He said those nights usually end with a group dinner at Wolfgang's Steakhouse on 33rd Street. But Saturday, the stakes will be much higher. On Preakness Day at Pimlico, in his third career start, Crudo won the Sir Barton Stakes by 7¹/₂ lengths. Pletcher, a four-time winner in the Belmont, gave the son of 2018 Triple Crown champion Justify a few weeks to breeze, considered other options and decided to give it a go in the $2 million race. 'The horse is here, he's doing well, I don't see a whole lot of pace in the race, we've got [jockey] John Velazquez available,' Pletcher said. 'I couldn't come up with a reason not to give it a try.' Crudo's name, not surprisingly, has ties to the culinary world. 3 Bobby Flay is pictured June 6. Jason Szenes for the NY Post 'I came up with the name,' Flay said, explaining he acknowledged raw talent, though on menus everywhere the word means raw fish. 'It's so hard to name these horses. I liked the fact that it meant raw because he was such a young horse when we bought him and he had talent. 'I told Jimmy what I named him and he was like, 'Really?' He wasn't impressed,' Flay added about his partner, who is in commercial real estate and has been involved in horse racing for more than 30 years. 'Naming horses and naming restaurants. If they turn out to be good, the name makes perfect sense. It couldn't be anything else.' Flay spent much of his spring rooting on his beloved Knicks from the first few rows at Madison Square Garden. Like most fans, he reveled in the team's longest playoff run in 25 years and still is feeling the disappointment. 3 Bobby Flay and co-owner James Ventura are pictured with their horse, Crudo, on June 6. Jason Szenes for the NY Post 'I remember all the playoff seasons when we ran into Michael Jordan,' said Flay, who lists the Knicks and Yankees as his biggest sports passions. 'We were good then, but we kind of couldn't get past it. It was fun to watch those guys play this year. They're a really good team and, unfortunately, they lost to Indiana.' Flay said he was surprised at the firing of coach Tom Thibodeau. 'I am. I thought he did a good job. I mean, we beat the world champions. We beat the Celtics soundly,' he said. 'A couple things go different ways and you're in the Finals. I don't always think that new is a good idea, but it's not my team.' His team on Saturday is Crudo-Flay-Ventura-Pletcher. 'Both Bobby and Jimmy love horse racing. Bobby's been terrific to train for, for a number of years,' Pletcher said. 'He's knowledgeable and also always says, 'You can make the decision.' We've had some success together and these guys are fun to train for.'

Ryan Gosling's ‘Star Wars: Starfighter': Everything to know as Mia Goth takes on the Mikey Madison role
This is as close as we're going to get a Barbie-MaXXXine crossover. Mia Goth is joining the new Ryan Gosling-powered Star Wars installment, Starfighter, taking over the role originally offered Anora Oscar winner Mikey Madison. The casting coup is the latest scrap of news about the anticipated project, which will be helmed by Shawn Levy and which had its coming-out party at Star Wars Celebration in April 2025. Here's everything we know so far about Star Wars: Starfighter. More from GoldDerby Danya Taymor could make Tony Awards history with a win for 'John Proctor Is the Villain' How 'Severance' creates Lumon's 'manufactured perfection' through VFX 'Say Nothing' star Anthony Boyle on playing IRA activist Brendan Hughes: We 'get to the humanity as opposed to the mythology' The are scant details about the plot, other than it is a one-off installment that involves Ryan Gosling's character and his young companion being pursued by villainous forces. Levy says that Starfighter will cover new territory in franchise storytelling and won't feature any of the major characters from prior releases. 'This is a standalone. It's not a prequel, not sequel. It's a new adventure. It's set in a period of time that we haven't seen explored yet,' the filmmaker said. 'The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters,' said Gosling. 'It's filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.' Starfighter the movie is not related to the 2001 video game of the same name from LucasArts that was set on the planet of Naboo during the time period of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Starfighter takes place about five years after the events of the last Star Wars feature, 2019's Rise of Skywalker. The two previously collaborated on The Adam Project and This Is Where I Leave You. "That rumor is true," Levy said as he brought out his star to the stage to massive cheers. "The rumors are true." According to Variety, Mikey Madison was initially offered the female lead one of the baddies hunting down Gosling and his young sidekick. Madion reportedly turned down the role due to a pay dispute. Mariah Carey is back to heat up summer with a new bop — 20 years after ‘We Belong Together'
For years, Mariah Carey has reigned as the Queen of Christmas. With that unsnatchable crown, the 56-year-old diva has seemed perfectly content to chill until defrosting herself right after Halloween to rule the holiday season with 'All I Want for Christmas Is You.' But now MC is heating up a different season — summer — with her first proper new single since her last studio album, 2018's 'Caution.' And 'Type Dangerous' — released to the delight of Lambs all over on Friday — threatens to be one of the bops of summer. Advertisement 4 Mariah Carey is back with 'Type Dangerous,' her first proper single since her 2018 album 'Caution.' Ethan James Green Yes, 20 years after Carey owned the summer of 2000 with 'We Belong Together,' she's back. It's not so hard to believe — you can never keep a good diva down. Advertisement 'Type Dangerous' marks another comeback for Carey after 'We Belong Together' — from her blockbuster album 'The Emancipation of Mimi' — put Carey back on top after a period of relative decline. Arriving just one week after the 20th anniversary edition of 'The Emancipation of Mimi,' 'Type Dangerous' sounds as if it could've been on that legendary 2005 LP. Sampling the Eric B. & Rakim classic 'Eric B. Is President,' it pays homage to Carey's history as one of the first pop artists to really embrace hip-hop and collaborate with rappers, going all the way back to Ol' Dirty Bastard on the 'Fantasy' remix. 4 Mariah Carey's new single, 'Type Dangerous,' previews her upcoming album that is being teased as 'MC16.' Dennis Leupold Advertisement And with that bumping bass line, it sounds like New York in the summertime. The lyrics might get a little silly for a certified icon in her fabulous 50s — should she really be dealing with a 'computer boy toy' who's 'on the web hacking other girls' files'? — but Carey can still pull off silly as well as sassy. (And hey, she doesn't celebrate birthdays but anniversaries, so really she's ageless.) 4 Mariah Carey recently filmed a video for her new single 'Type Dangerous.' Instagram/ Mariah Carey Advertisement 4 Mariah Carey received the Icon Award at the iHeartRadio Music Awards in March. Getty Images for iHeartRadio Hearing her coo that 'I like 'em dangerous' while 'I don't have time for the rigmarole' doesn't have to make any kind of sense, but it sure is fun when the beat is this sweet. Perhaps that jolt of joy comes from the fact that 'Type Dangerous' was co-written by Carey's rumored new beau — and Bruno Mars' partner in Silk Sonic. It sounds like mama is having a good time — and so do we. While it remains to be seen if Carey can still hold her own on the charts with the Sabrina Carpenters of the world — the 'Espresso' singer also just dropped a new summer bop, 'Manchild' — it's great to hear her sounding fierce and refreshed. And apparently there is more new music on the way from her upcoming album being teased as 'MC16.' Consider us obsessed — again.
