Ultium Cells pivots to LFP batteries to cut EV costs, expand portfolio
Ultium Cells, a joint venture between LG Energy Solution and General Motors, has decided to upgrade its battery cell manufacturing plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, to produce low-cost lithium iron phosphate, or LFP, battery cells as it aims to expand its business portfolio.
According to the announcement on Tuesday, the conversion of battery cell lines at the Tennessee site will begin later this year. Commercial production is expected to begin by late 2027. The plant has been rolling out lithium-ion batteries using cathode materials, namely nickel, cobalt and manganese, to produce LFP cells.
'The upgrade reflects the continued strength of our partnership with General Motors and our shared commitment to advancing EV battery innovation,' said Suh Won-joon Suh, executive vice president and head of the Advanced Automotive Battery division at LG Energy Solution.
'We will bring our extensive experience and expertise in US manufacturing to the joint venture facility, further accelerating our efforts to deliver new chemistries and form factors that effectively capture the unmet needs in the EV market.'
The joint venture said that the cost for the upgrades will come from the $2.3 billion initial investment, which was first unveiled in 2021. It added that another Ultium Cells plant in Warren, Ohio, will continue manufacturing battery cells using nickel, cobalt, manganese and aluminum. The company said it aims for significant battery pack cost savings compared to today's high-nickel battery pack and widened consumer EV choices with the LFP battery technology.
'At GM, we're innovating battery technology to deliver the best mix of range, performance and affordability to our EV customers,' said Kurt Kelty, vice president of batteries, propulsion and sustainability at GM.
'This upgrade at Spring Hill will enable us to scale production of lower-cost LFP cell technologies in the US, complementing our high-nickel and future lithium manganese rich solutions and further diversifying our growing EV portfolio."
According to the International Energy Agency's Global EV Outlook 2025 report, LFP batteries made up almost half of the global EV battery market last year with China leading the surge of the lower-cost battery products. The reports showed that LFP batteries accounted for approximately 80 percent of the batteries sold in China during the final two months of last year.
'LFP batteries have now reached a performance level sufficient for most EV applications, making their lower cost a key advantage for automakers aiming to mass markets,' said the report.
The IEA report added that although the battery production capacity in the US reached over 200 gigawatt-hours in 2024 — an over two-fold increase since 2022 — the cost of production in America remains higher than Asia, while sudden policy shifts could affect the battery industry to increase production costs or slow expansion in the near- to mid-term future.

LG Energy Solution posts 152% growth in profit on upbeat US sales

LG Energy Solution said Friday its operating profit in the second quarter surged 152 percent on-year to 492.2 billion won (357 million), predominantly led by stable demand for electric vehicles and energy storage systems in the North American market. According to the company's earnings report, it achieved profitability for the first time in six quarters, excluding financial benefits from the Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit under the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). However, sales revenue declined by 9.7 percent, amounting to 5.6 trillion won. This decline was primarily due to decreased purchases from automakers outside of North America, resulting from increased policy volatility, particularly concerning US tariffs. 'As North America and Europe both focus on expanding their domestic battery supply chains and domestic production, preference for battery companies capable of local supply and stable operations — such as LG Energy Solution — is expected to increase significantly,' said Kim Chang-sil, chief financial officer of LG Energy Solution, during a conference call earlier in the day. Highlighting its first-mover initiative in establishing the first ESS battery production site in North America, Kim noted that the company looks to offset the slowdown in EV battery sales with ESS products. This focus is on the fast-growing North American power grid market, with an emphasis on artificial intelligence data centers. In May, LG Energy Solution began mass production of LFP-based long pouch cells for ESS at its Michigan facility in the US. It has secured orders exceeding 50 gigawatt-hours from global energy firms, with joint ventures with global carmakers prioritizing a portion of their capacity for ESS supply. Aiming to reach 17 gigawatt-hours capacity by the end of this year, the battery-maker will expand to 30 gigawatt-hours by 2026 by converting EV production lines to ESS lines. Addressing the enactment of the One Big Beautiful Bills Act by the Trump administration earlier this month, LG Energy Solution believes that the North American EV market may experience a temporary demand slowdown. However, the new 'prohibited foreign entity' regulations, which restrict energy companies influenced by Chinese firms from receiving tax credits when investing in the US, could partly benefit the company. 'The new PFE procurement requirements are more relaxed than the foreign entity of concern requirements under the IRA, offering an opportunity to optimize our US supply chain,' said Lee Yeon-hee, head of the business strategy division at LG Energy Solution. 'A certain percentage can be sourced from PFEs, and as PFE restrictions are limited to direct material costs, we can leverage more cost-effective supply chains for some materials.' LG Energy Solution also plans to accelerate the launch of battery cells for rapidly emerging low-cost EVs. To target the expanding European market for mid- to low-priced EVs, the company is preparing to mass-produce high-voltage mid-nickel and lithium iron phosphate cells at its Poland plant. Notably, LFP products are set to boost cost-competitiveness by incorporating advanced manufacturing methods, including a solvent-free dry electrode process and fast-charging technologies. For the North American market, LG Energy Solution is collaborating with General Motors to develop lithium manganese-rich prismatic cells for their next-generation EVs in 2028. These products offer similar costs to LFP while delivering over 30 percent higher energy density. Upon reaching mass production, the LMR batteries are being reviewed for the phase 2 joint venture in Tennessee. The existing nickel, manganese and cobalt batteries will be exclusively manufactured in the phase 1 joint venture in Ohio.

[Exclusive] SK On revs up prismatic battery push with new pilot line

Korean battery maker eyes edge over Chinese rivals by diversifying cost-effective battery offerings SK On has begun setting up a pilot line for unidirectional prismatic battery cells at its Daejeon research center this week, as demand grows for this more space-efficient battery format in electric vehicles and energy storage systems. 'Unidirectional' or 'top terminal' cells refer to a battery design in which current flows through terminals placed on the top, optimizing the use of space and simplifying their integration into EVs. Prismatic cells can be made rectangular, unlike the more traditional cylindrical cells. This allows for higher energy density, as there is less empty space between the cells when packed together to make batteries. This initiative marks the completion of SK On's prismatic battery road map, following its earlier launch of a pilot line in 2023 for 'bidirectional' or 'side terminal' prismatic cells, which feature terminals on opposite sides to enhance current distribution and thermal efficiency. 'The initial setup of SK On's unidirectional prismatic battery pilot line — involving equipment delivery, positioning, unpacking, and installation — has start this week,' said an industry source familiar with the matter, speaking on condition of anonymity. 'Full-scale construction will begin next week, focusing on integrating utilities such as electrical connections.' The source added that sample production will commence soon after the line setup is complete, with a mass production schedule to be determined through client negotiations. The move is part of SK On's broader push to narrow the gap with domestic rival Samsung SDI, which already mass-produces unidirectional prismatic cells, while also preparing for large-scale production of bidirectional cells. LG Energy Solution is likewise developing prismatic batteries through a partnership with General Motors in the US and is reportedly building a pilot line at its Ochang plant in North Chungcheong Province. However, the specific type of prismatic cell remains undisclosed. Demand for prismatic battery cells is accelerating due to their high energy density, enhanced safety, and packaging efficiency — qualities that make them well-suited for both electric vehicles and energy storage systems. According to India-based Market Report Analytics, the global prismatic battery market is expected to grow from approximately $25 billion in 2028 to $40 billion by 2033. Automakers including Hyundai Motor Group, GM, Volkswagen, and Ford are increasingly adopting prismatic designs for next-generation EVs and hybrid vehicles. Samsung SDI, for example, signed a seven-year deal with Hyundai Motor in 2023 to supply batteries for its European EV lineup between 2026 and 2032. GM is working with LG Energy Solution on similar deployments. Though SK On has not disclosed specific customers, media reports suggest it may pursue supply deals with China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, following a strategic agreement signed last year. Geely owns global brands such as Geely Auto, Volvo, Polestar, and Lotus. SK On first unveiled its unidirectional and bidirectional prismatic prototypes at the InterBattery 2025 exhibition in Seoul in March. Industry experts say its expansion into unidirectional designs could help SK On build a more diversified customer base and better compete with Chinese firms such as CATL and CALB. Those companies have primarily focused on bidirectional formats, which are optimal for cell-to-pack systems that eliminate conventional battery modules. In contrast, unidirectional cells are better suited for modular systems, where battery cells are arranged into packs via intermediate modules — still widely favored in many EV platforms.

Kospi ends higher amid postponed tariff talks; won sharply up

Seoul shares closed slightly higher Thursday amid heightened concerns over high-level trade talks between South Korea and the United States. The Korean won rose sharply against the US dollar. The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index added 6.68 points, or 0.21 percent, to close at 3,190.45. The index had surpassed the 3,230-point mark during the morning session, but trimmed earlier gains on news the "2+2" high-level trade talks between Seoul and Washington, originally planned for Friday (US time) in Washington, were postponed due to the urgent schedule of US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The two sides had planned to hold the high-stake negotiations involving Bessent, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and their respective Korean counterparts -- Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol and Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo. "News like this ahead of the planned imposition of 25 percent reciprocal tariffs on Aug. 1 raises concerns for investors," Seo Sang-young, an analyst at Mirae Asset Securities, said. "After the news, major Korean automobile firms trimmed their earlier gains or turned to losses," he added. Trade volume was moderate at 422.4 million shares worth 12.9 trillion won ($9.4 billion), with losers outnumbering winners 707 to 192. Foreigners and institutions purchased local shares worth 736.7 billion won and 128.8 billion won, respectively, while retail investors dumped 950.9 billion won. Battery and shipbuilding shares were particularly strong in Thursday's session.
