Cooper Flagg is the prize player as the Mavericks hold the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft
NEW YORK (AP) — Cooper Flagg lived up to every expectation during one season at Duke and has the potential for NBA superstardom.
That's why Mavericks fans can't wait to get him to Dallas.
The Mavericks are expected to take Flagg with the No. 1 pick in the draft on Wednesday night, quickly adding another franchise-altering player after trading one away last season.
The Mavericks fell into the lottery after dealing Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February, though they had only a 1.8% chance of winning it. When they did, it gave them the opportunity to add an 18-year-old who was college basketball's best player in 2024-25.
Flagg averaged 19.2 points and 7.5 rebounds and led Duke to the Final Four. The 6-foot-8 forward topped the Blue Devils in all five major statistical categories and already has proven he has a game that will more than hold up against the pros when he played well last summer during an invite to the U.S. Olympic team's training camp.
If Flagg is the choice, it will end two straight years when an American college player was not the No. 1 pick in the draft, the first time that had happened. The San Antonio Spurs selected Victor Wembanyama in 2023 and the Atlanta Hawks took another French player, Zaccherie Risacher, last season.
The Spurs have the No. 2 pick this year. Then it's Philadelphia, Charlotte and Utah.

He was the Super Bowl XXI MVP in the franchise's first championship, defeating the John Elway-led Denver Broncos. He set a Super Bowl record in that game with a 22-for-25 (88%) completion percentage and threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns. The two-time Pro Bowler amassed 33,462 yards passing and 199 passing touchdowns in his career. Simms been inducted into the Giants' Ring of Honor and has his No. 11 jersey retired by the organization. He is also a member of the Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame. Alijah Arenas says he was 'fighting time' as he tried to escape burning truck after accident
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California basketball recruit Alijah Arenas has provided the first details of the car crash that left him in an induced coma in April. Initially disoriented after crashing his Tesla Cybertruck into a tree, Arenas said he felt panic as smoke filled the front cabin and the doors wouldn't open. 'I was fighting time,' Arenas said during a news conference Tuesday. Arenas, who's father Gilbert played in the NBA, was involved in the single-car crash last April when he said the Cybertruck's keypad and steering wheel wouldn't respond. Arenas said he awoke to find the passenger side of the dashboard engulfed in flames and tried to use his digital key to escape, only to find the Tesla app had locked him out. 'I tried to open the door and the door wasn't opening,' he said. Arenas moved to the back seat and tried to break out the window, but wasn't able to. He doused himself with a water bottle to cool his body down and spent nearly 10 minutes in the burning car before finally busting out the driver's side window and falling into a few inches of water from a broken fire hydrant as bystanders helped pull him to safety.
