Great white shark sightings off Maine trigger warnings for beachgoers

CBS News17-07-2025
Officials in Maine are warning swimmers and beachgoers to exercise caution after multiple sightings of great white sharks in the same area where the state's only fatal shark attack took place.
There were two documented sightings off Bailey Island, a picturesque spot in Maine's Casco Bay, according to a social media post by Harpswell Marine Resources & Harbor Management. Shark notification flags are now on display at Cedar Beach, on the northeast side of the island.
The beach is still open for swimming, the agency said.
"This notification system is in place for people to make informed decisions only," the agency said.
Beachgoers who see sharks are asked to take pictures of the fish and contact the Cumberland County Regional Communication Center, the marine resources agency said.
Maine's first and only deadly shark attack occurred off the coast of Bailey Island in 2020. Julie Dimperio Holowach, a 63-year-old New York City woman, was swimming with her daughter about 30 to 40 feet off the island's shore when she was bitten. Her daughter was not injured. Two kayakers helped Holowach get to shore, where an ambulance provided care, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Maine officials said the shark that attacked Holowach was a great white shark. Officials described the incident as an unprovoked attack, but said that Holowach was wearing a wetsuit and may have been mistaken for a seal.
There have only been two documented unprovoked shark attacks in Maine, including the one that killed Holowach, according to researchers from the International Shark Attack File, a database run by the Florida Museum of Natural History and the University of Florida. Unprovoked shark attacks are generally rare.

Trump ‘considering' taking control of DC police

President Trump said Wednesday he's considering taking control of the Washington, D.C., police department in the wake of a violent attack on a former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) staffer. 'We're considering it yeah, because the crime is ridiculous,' Trump said when asked if he was considering federalizing the Metropolitan Police Department. 'We want to have a great, safe capital. And we're going to have it. And that includes cleanliness and that includes other things,' Trump added. Under the Home Rule Act, Trump can temporarily take control of the district's police department if he determines 'special conditions of an emergency nature exist.' Trump's frustrations with the district have been revitalized after Edward Coristine, a former DOGE staffer nicknamed 'Big Balls,' was attacked in an incident earlier this week. Trump said Wednesday he was planning to speak with Coristine. Trump on Tuesday shared on Truth Social an image of a bloodied Coristine and called on the D.C. to prosecute teenagers as adults. Crime in D.C. was down 35 percent in 2024 from the previous year, marking a 30-year low. Data from the district shows violent crime is also down so far in 2025 compared with the previous year. Still, Trump has repeatedly threatened to take control of Washington throughout his second term and has spoken at length about his desire to rid the city of crime and its homeless population. The president has met multiple times with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser since the 2024 election, and Trump has said the two get along well. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Trump: DC will ‘soon be one of the safest' cities

President Trump on Saturday touted his administration's moves to address violence and crime in the nation's capital, teasing that soon it would be 'one of the safest' cities in the U.S. Trump, in a post on Truth Social, said the administration would provide an update on Monday, after the president ordered federal law enforcement officials to patrol the streets in Washington over the next week. 'On Monday a Press Conference will be held at the White House which will, essentially, stop violent crime in Washington, D.C.,' he wrote. 'It has become one of the most dangerous cities anywhere in the World.' He added, 'It will soon be one of the safest!!!' The effort has been led by the U.S. Park Police and includes officers and agents from the FBI, Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), divisions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other agencies, according to the White House. Vice President Vance on Saturday commended Trump for his plan to combat what he called Washington's 'out-of-control' crime. 'Our nation's capital has become ridden with out-of-control violent crime thanks to misguided local leadership,' he wrote on X. 'President Trump is putting a stop to this lawlessness.' Friday marked the second day of the patrol and Trump added officers from the U.S. Secret Service and U.S. Marshals Service to the fray. Over 120 officers were assigned to high-traffic areas and will be highly visible and marked, a White House official said. On the first night, according to the official, arrests were made for possession of stolen firearms and illegal drugs. Trump has previously floated a federal overhaul of the city, which would require Congressional this year, he signed an executive order to make Washington 'safe and beautiful.' At the time he said Mayor Muriel Bowser was doing a good job, but warned that if things changed, the federal government would have no other choice but to step in. The latest threats of a takeover come after a former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) official, known as 'Big Balls,' was attacked in the city by a group of teenagers. Two 15-year-olds were arrested in connection to the incident and charged for the attempted carjacking. The president has pushed the city council to upgrade its laws to allow teens 14 and older to be tried as adults. U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro has also supported the idea. 'They are not afraid of Law Enforcement because they know nothing ever happens to them, but it's going to happen now!' Trump posted Tuesday on Truth Social, with a graphic photo. 'The Law in D.C. must be changed to prosecute these 'minors' as adults, and lock them up for a long time, starting at age 14.' He said, 'The most recent victim was beaten mercilessly by local thugs.' White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller also compared crime in the nation's capital to foreign war zones on Thursday, calling Washington 'more violent than Baghdad.' Crime in the district, however, hit a 30-year low last year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed. Delays seen in small village due to car crash

The emergency services were seen in a small Buckinghamshire town following a single-vehicle car crash. On the morning of Monday, August 11, two off-duty Specials from Thames Valley Police independently came across the incident that had occurred in Waddesdon, just outside Aylesbury. A photo taken at the scene revealed that a Fiat Punto had crashed into an island in the area. A spokesperson from the force said: 'After ensuring that the police and SCAS [South Central Ambulance Service] had been called, they gave reassurance to the driver and worked together to keep traffic flowing, maintaining everyone's safety. 'This allowed the incident to be resolved quickly once on-duty Emergency Services arrived. 'Thanks also go to two members of the public who stopped to assist, including a former Special Constable who served the community 30 years ago.'
