Mandatory evacuation order remains in effect as Redwater wildfire flares
An evacuation order Sturgeon County issued Tuesday afternoon remains in place for homes northeast of the town of Redwater, Alta., due to the threat of wildfires.
The wildfire, which started over the weekend, is burning near the Redwater Provincial Recreation Area.
Fire officials warned that there was a chance of high fire activity due to wind and dry conditions and the bounds of the evacuation order fluctuated throughout the evening Tuesday as crews battled the flames.
According to an alert issued shortly after 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, the evacuation order is still in effect for Range Road 213 east to Range Road 203 and between Township Road 580 south to Township Road 573.
Everyone forced to evacuate should head to the reception centre at Pembina Place, in Redwater, about 65 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.
The fire covers 1,500 hectares as of Tuesday at 8:20 p.m., up from 408 hectares the day before.
At 9:10 p.m. an evacuation order was issued for Thorhild County for everyone living on Range Roads 203-211 and Township Roads 580-584. There is a reception centre for evacuees at Thorhild Community Hall. The county has also issued a state of local emergency.

Some flights resume at Kelowna airport as wildfire stops spreading
Burned trees are seen above a neighbourhood in West Kelowna, B.C. on Friday, Aug. 25, 2023. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Marissa Tiel Some flights have now resumed at Kelowna International Airport, after wildfire crews working in the area had to shut down the airspace. The Whelan Creek Wildfire is currently classified as 'being held,' which means officials believe it won't spread any further. However, it did get dangerously close to some homes over the weekend. Air tankers and helicopters were dispatched to the Ellison area around 3:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The fire started on a hill behind the airport. The flames spread quickly, coming close to homes. The BC Wildfire Service closed airspace around YLW for several hours, delaying or cancelling a number of flights, but it has since reopened. Seven properties on Rockface Road and Dead Pine drive were on evacuation order overnight, while another 106 were put on evacuation alert. The fire is listed as 'human caused,' though it's unclear whether it was sparked by accident or intentionally. It has burned 4.3 hectares so far.

Edmonton weather: Hot start to the week
Sunny with some occasional clouds in the Edmonton area today, and temperatures climbing into the mid 20s. Tuesday has a chance to be our fifth 30 C day of the year (average for the entire year is four). Eastern Alberta is under a fog advisory, but that should burn off by mid-morning. A few scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible in northeastern Alberta late today, but it should be a dry day across most of the province. The heat REALLY starts to ramp up on Tuesday ahead of an upper low that'll move across northern Alberta on Wednesday. A strong southwest flow ahead of that system should push temperatures up around 30 C in Edmonton and area Tuesday afternoon. Northeastern Alberta gets close to 30 C, while northwestern Alberta should hit the mid to upper 20s. Southern Alberta will see some low to mid 30s Tuesday afternoon and the southeast corner of the province will get another day of heat Wednesday. Everywhere else across the province, temperatures drop back into the 18 to 24 C range on Wednesday. In Edmonton, we're expecting to slip back to the low 20s for highs Wednesday/Thursday and then back to the mid to upper 20s Friday/Saturday. There's not a really high risk of showers or thunderstorms in the Edmonton region this week, but there are two possibilities: Tuesday evening/night - a slight chance Wednesday - a low to moderate chance of a shower. Here's the forecast for Edmonton and area: Today - Sunny with a few clouds. High: 25 Tonight - A few clouds. 9pm: 22 Tuesday - Sunny with a few clouds.
