Ranchi: In a first case for the state during the current Covid-19 surge in the country, Lal Vijay Shahdeo, a 53-year-old filmmaker and member of the Jharkhand Film Development Corporation Limited, has tested positive for the virus after coming back from Mumbai recently.
He is currently undergoing treatment at Santevita Hospital under the care of Dr Mohit Narayan and a team of doctors from the hospital.
Though the govt has not issued an advisory, it has asked the public not to panic and assured that the situation is under control.
Health minister Irfan Ansari, said, "There is no need to panic. The situation is under control and being closely monitored by the health department. Wearing masks in crowded places is essential not just to prevent Covid but also to guard against other bacterial and viral infections.
I urge everyone to stay alert, stay safe and remain health conscious."
Shahdeo had returned to Ranchi from Mumbai on May 22. During the flight, he experienced a sudden deterioration of his health and lost consciousness mid-air. He was admitted to the hospital on Saturday when he began exhibiting symptoms such as body pain, fever and cough. A Covid test was conducted on the same day and the result returned positive.

COVID cases on the rise in the State
COVID-19 cases are on a slow but sure rise in the State. While hospitalisations or ICU admissions have not shown any rising trend, those now hospitalised due to COVID are all elderly or people with chronic comorbidities, Health department officials have said. At a meeting of the State Rapid Response Team chaired by Health Minister Veena George here on Tuesday, the officials reiterated the warning that while the disease caused by the COVID virus variants currently in circulation -- LF.7 and XFG -- was mild, it tended to take a bad turn in the elderly and those with comorbidities. Wearing masks at public places, during travel or in closed spaces was the best preventive measure against COVID. At present, there are 2,223 active cases in the State, 96 of whom are hospitalised. Ernakulam district has 431 cases, Kottayam 426 and Thiruvananthapuram, 365 cases. All hospitals have been asked to test those coming to the OP clinics or emergency rooms with respiratory symptoms and to ensure that their oxygen facilities are sufficient. Private hospitals will be asked not to refer COVID cases unnecessarily to major hospitals. People should avoid unnecessary hospital visits and ensure that they wear masks while in hospitals. Hand hygiene and cough etiquette are to be maintained without fail. The State RRT meeting also issued a public health alert that intermittent rains in the State can lead to a spike in dengue, leptospirosis cases and water-borne diseases like Hepatitis A Water stagnation around houses and plantations can lead to vector breeding and a spike in dengue cases. Local bodies were directed to make micro plans to check the rise in infectious diseases. The Additional Chief Secretary (Health) and other senior Health officials were present at the meeting.

43 more XFG cases takes total tally in state to 49
Kolkata: The new Covid-19 variant, XFG, was found in 43 more Covid-positive samples in Bengal during whole genome sequencing. This brings the total number of XFG variant cases in Bengal to 49. While the number of samples being sequenced is still not high enough, doctors said this strain could be causing the current spike in the state as well as in other parts of the country. Health officials said that XFG belongs to the Omicron family of Covid-19, and despite its high transmissibility, this variant is known to cause only mild infection in most cases. "With XFG isolated in most positive samples, this variant is emerging as the dominant variant in circulation during this spike. But there is nothing to worry about as this variant is causing only mild infection," said a health official. By Tuesday, the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) detected 206 XFG variant cases across the country. In Maharashtra, 89 cases of this new variant were found, while Tamil Nadu and Kerala followed with 16 and 15 cases, respectively. Yogiraj Ray, head of the infectious diseases department at IPGMER, said,"While this variant can emerge as the dominant variant in circulation, there is nothing to worry about as it is an offshoot of Omicron. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's The Price for a 1-Day Walk-in Shower In 2025 Homebuddy Learn More Undo In fact, two post-transplant patients – kidney and liver – who tested positive for Covid-19 did not get severe infection." "Covid-19 is endemic and will stay in the community now. XFG is known to be immune evasive. A variant with high transmissibility and low mortality is likely to spike rapidly but subside fast. Since the current spike is causing mostly mild infection, we should not worry. But genomic sequencing should be carried out on a regular basis so that any aberrant mutation can be detected on time for better preparedness and also to mitigate unnecessary panic," said Sumon Poddar, associate professor of paediatrics at the Institute of Child Health Kolkata, who is also attached to the microbiology lab of the institute.

Manipur confirms first Covid case this year as university student tests positive
Manipur confirmed its first Covid case this year after a 23-year-old student tested positive for coronavirus, Health Services Director Dr Chambo Gonmei said on Tuesday. The Covid patient is a native of Ngaikhong Khullen in Bishnupur district and a master's student at Manipur University, Dr Gonmei said. Dr Gonmei said the 23-year-old woman's RT-PCR test returned positive on Monday. He said the patient was tested at a private clinic in Imphal on June 5 after developing Covid symptoms, including fever. However, she left Imphal for Hyderabad for her internship before knowing her Covid status. She has reportedly been staying in a rented apartment in Imphal West district. Dr Gonmei said the state Covid surveillance team was investigating the case. 'Our team has also reached out to the administration in Bishnupur, the native district of the patient, besides Imphal West. We have learned that she had been under home isolation after developing the symptoms,' he said. Dr Gonmei said that although it was waiting for a new advisory from the health ministry, the state health department had taken all the precautionary measures based on the earlier guidelines. Dr Gonmei said there was no need to panic. 'We are investigating the type of the variant. But the public need not panic, for the new strain is not as severe as the previous ones. Only patients with a poor immune system are more vulnerable,' he said. As per official sources, Manipur reported its previous Covid case on May 25, 2024. During the pandemic, 2,149 people died of Covid and over 1.40 lakh people tested positive for the virus in the state.
