First migrants detained under UK-France returns deal, Starmer confirms
The first detentions came after people arrived in Dover on Wednesday, the first day the pilot scheme came into force.
Posting to social media, the prime minister said: 'We have detained the first illegal migrants under our new deal before returning them to France. No gimmicks, just results.
'If you break the law to enter this country, you will face being sent back. When I say I will stop at nothing to secure our borders, I mean it.'
The Home Office said detentions began for those who arrived on Wednesday afternoon and they will be held in immigration removal centres until they are returned to France.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said: 'Yesterday, under the terms of this groundbreaking new treaty, the first group of people to cross the Channel were detained after their arrival at Western Jet Foil and will now be held in detention until they can be returned to France.
'That sends a message to every migrant currently thinking of paying organised crime gangs to go to the UK that they will be risking their lives and throwing away their money if they get into a small boat.'

Ste and Nikita Eastwood's son Alex was 15 when he died on 2 July 2024 after an exhibition match at Platt Bridge in Wigan. Nandy, who is also the MP for Wigan, met the couple at their Liverpool home and said she would be "exploring ways to urgently improve the safety and welfare of children in martial arts". An inquest into Alex's death found there was no minimum standard of medical aid at such events or proper risk assessments done. The coroner who investigated took the unusual step of issuing a Prevention of Future Deaths (PFD) report before the full inquest had taken place. It stated unofficial or unsanctioned matches had no guideline of what minimum standards had to be met. Leigh Day Alex Eastwood's parents Nikita and Ste met Lisa Nandy to discuss safety improvements in children's martial arts Mr Eastwood said: "We were very encouraged by the constructive meeting with Lisa Nandy. She told us she is considering a range of options to tackle the issues we described to her. He said the couple was looking forward to working with her in the future. Speaking after a debate in Parliament prompted by the Eastwoods' MP Dan Carden, Mrs Eastwood said: "As a family we are determined to see these gaps eradicated so that no other kickboxer faces the risks that Alex did on the day he suffered his fatal injury." Benjamin Netanyahu vows to defeat Hamas as he condemns 'global campaign of lies' over starving Gazans
Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel has "no choice but to finish the job" against Hamas due to the militant group's "refusal to lay down its arms". The Israeli prime minister made the comment in a news briefing for foreign journalists on Sunday, where he also denied starving Gazans and claimed there is a "global campaign of lies" against Israel. "Given Hamas's refusal to lay down its arms, Israel has no choice but to finish the job and complete the defeat of Hamas," he said. Mr Netanyahu said there are "two remaining [Hamas] strongholds" in Gaza that he intends to "dismantle", claiming this is "the best way to end the war". He also addressed global concerns about a lack of aid being allowed into Gaza. Many aid organisations have said the enclave is on the verge of famine and Palestinian officials recently said at least 100 people have died of malnutrition, including 80 children. Mr Netanyahu said: "If we had a starvation policy, no one in Gaza would have survived after two years of war." He also repeated the allegation that Hamas has been looting aid trucks and claimed uncollected food has been "rotting" at the border, blaming the UN for not distributing it. The war in Gaza began on 7 October 2023 when Hamas killed about 1,200 people - mostly civilians - and abducted 251 others in its attack. Most of the hostages have been released in ceasefires or other deals. It is believed Hamas is still holding 50 captives, with 20 believed to be alive. Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed more than 61,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry, which does not differentiate between militants and civilians in its count.
