LONDON — Like the fissionable atom, punctuation marks are wee items capable of causing a tremendous release of energy. Passionate disagreement over the use of exclamation points is so familiar that a 'Seinfeld' plotline saw Elaine's new romance with a writer blow up because he didn't share her enthusiasm. F. Scott Fitzgerald, in the anti-exclam brigade, famously said using them is 'like laughing at your own joke.'

Sabrina Carpenter Won't Fall for The Row's $690 Flip-Flops—Her $4 Pair Does the Trick

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. On July 14, Sabrina Carpenter shared her first Instagram-worthy photo dump of the month with her 48 million followers. Like famous peers Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber, her vacation-season carousel included snaps of recent trips abroad. (Destinations: Paris and London, in Carpenter's case). Unlike other celebrities, however, the Grammy winner apparently packed $4 Old Navy flip-flops instead of The Row's $690 rubber slides for her travels. In the thirteenth photo, Carpenter propped her legs up on a wall (a beneficial yoga pose, BTW), simultaneously modeling her new Old Navy find. (There was no mistaking the flip-flop's for another brand's: She tagged the retailer directly.) Her photos doubled down on the polka-dot trend too, showing the black thongs with white polka-dots in one photo and a dotted manicure in another. She accessorized the Old Navy shoes with a spiral, of-the-moment anklet, another craze co-signed by Bieber, Kylie Jenner, Gigi Hadid, and more. (Fans believe the ankle bracelet is actually a $10 mosquito repellant.) View Deal Why did she tag Old Navy, you ask? As a longtime Carpenter, I know she frequently takes cues from Taylor Swift's big book of Easter eggs. Seeing as she's never publicly worn Old Navy before, perhaps the post is teasing an upcoming collab with chief creative officer, Zac Posen. Old Navy's sister label, Gap, has dressed It girls like Emily Ratajkowski, Lila Moss, and Laura Harrier in recent months, so, teaming up with Carpenter wouldn't be too far-fetched. Of course, there could be a simpler explanation: the singer was just proud of her under-$5 summer shoe find. Old Navy rumors aside, Carpenter has been pro-polka-dot since early 2024, when the revival was just starting to pick up speed. In her "Taste" music video, she wore a black-and-white bubble skirt and the matching halter top to slay her (fictional) ex-boyfriend. Together, the Blondita two-piece cost $140. View Deal View Deal On the Short n' Sweet tour, her stylist, Jared Ellner partnered with Victoria's Secret to create her lingerie-inspired costumes, including a polka-dotted bodysuit she wore at the Paris show in March. It's rare for a Carpenter-approved piece to be as inexpensive as her Old Navy flip-flops, so get your hands on them while you still can. I've already bought two pairs. Paul Hollywood appeals for help after his brother Lee was assaulted in a 'nasty' attack while walking his dog

Great British Bake Off star Paul Hollywood has asked for help from the public after his brother was pushed to the ground and beaten by a dog walker. The TV host, 59, shared news of the attack on Instagram after Wirral Police issued a public appeal for witnesses to come forward. While the police bulletin did not name the victim, Paul wrote in the caption that the man who was attacked was his brother Lee. The police appeal stated: "We are appealing for witnesses after a man was assaulted in Leasowe last night, Friday 8 August. "The man, who is in his 50s, was walking his dog on Links View Playing fields, near to Shackleton Road, at around 7.10pm when his dog and another dog, which was being walked by an another male, began barking at each other. "The dogs were separated by the other male who then became irate. As the man walked away he was approached from behind and punched to the floor by the male. He was then kicked in the face and back before the male made off. "The man suffered injuries to his back and face and was taken to hospital for treatment. "An investigation is underway and witness and CCTV enquiries are in the process of being carried out." Detective Inspector Phil Ryan added: ''This was a nasty and unprovoked assault which left the man needing hospital treatment. ''We are appealing for anyone who was in the area of Links View Playing fields or Shackleton Road at around 7pm [on Friday] who heard or saw the incident or saw the male leaving the area to contact us." Anyone with information can contact Merseyside Police via X or online, or dial 101, quoting reference 25000654914. Lee Hollywood is a professional baker like his brother and founded his bread company Born & Bread in Moreton, Merseyside, in 2002. The business supplied hundreds of artisan loaves, baguettes and pastries to hotels, restaurants, delicatessens and football clubs. In an interview in 2016, Lee Hollywood said that he worked 13-shifts to make the business work. He quipped: "I'm the grafter of the family, Paul's too busy with Bake-Off. The last time he made a proper loaf was about ten years ago!" Sadly, the business went into administration in 2020 and Lee Hollywood's recent ventures are not known.

Lisa Eldrige on the new beauty rules: 'Only conceal when absolutely necessary'

I was six when I 'discovered' make-up. My mum and I were at my grandparents' house, when I came across her teenage cosmetics case: Mary Quant crayons, Coty lipsticks, Elizabeth Arden eyeshadows .. It sparked my obsession with colour, make-up and its history. Audrey Hepburn is my ultimate make-up muse and beauty icon. Her signature, doe-eyed, gamine style has proved perennially popular and she was a beautiful person, inside and out. Who has inspired my career most? Make-up artist Mary Greenwell. Way before I was a make-up artist, I would use my pocket money to buy Vogue. The photoshoots would say 'make-up by Mary Greenwell'. I remember thinking — I want to be Mary Greenwell! One of the most memorable moments in my career was shooting for Prada in East Berlin with Ridley Scott and his daughter Jordan. We were there for a week. East Berlin was still quite avant-garde — we had all of the Prada archives there and shot in the most amazing locations. One of my lipsticks, Meet Me In Berlin, I named as an homage to this memory. For me, make-up has always been more than glittering surfaces... It's a signifier of creativity and humanity. You have to know the past to understand the present, and once you realise that the make-up you carry in your handbag has traversed through hundreds of years to end up in your hand, your understanding of beauty will be revolutionised forever. After working for so many other brands for years, I was excited to do things my way. I pour my heart into my Lisa Eldridge Beauty products and I think it shows. I'm always striving to create unique shades which have been described as 'un-dupable'. My make-up philosophy is about enhancing what you have, only concealing where absolutely necessary. I'll apply a thin layer of my Lisa Eldridge Skin Enhancing tint (£37, and use my Pinpoint Concealer Micro Correcting pencil (£27, to cover some redness here, lift a shadow there. I team this pared-back skin with a 'my-lips-but-better' lip — my Baume Embrace in Épanoui (£26, My Kitten Lash Mascara in Burnt Umber (£29, is a favourite — and lifted, fanned-out lashes. makes me look instantly more awake. The insider beauty tip everyone should know? Facial massage! I learned the importance of it from my mum and, trust me, you only have to look at her to see the evidence of its beautifying benefits. Make-up is a creative outlet that can give such confidence. I've witnessed the most reserved people use a confidence-boosting slick of red lipstick to tackle what lies ahead. Working with Isabella Rossellini for Lancôme's 80th birthday party in Paris was a pinch-me moment. I have always been inspired by her beauty and all she stands for. Another was working with Dua Lipa for the 2019 Met Gala. I love witnessing the cyclical nature of trends, but it's important to recognise their transience. A heavy, hyper-perfected make-up look has dominated the past few years, and the recent resurgence of 1990s grunge and more minimal looks is a manifestation of our fatigue at trying to achieve this. Likewise, the first-time round, 1990s grunge make-up was a reaction to the excessive glamour and full-on make-up of the 1980s. Am I a smell person? Yes! When I was living in Los Angeles I went to the Violet Grey store when it first opened and was bowled over by the Diana Vreeland fragrances, especially Daringly Different (£195, with its iris, violet and leathery notes. Another scent that makes me happy is Oil of Ulay, as it used to be called. But it's a bittersweet memory — it takes me back to my granny's kitchen where she kept a bottle on the bureau. In my bathroom cabinet? The Ultra Violette Queen Screen SPF50 (£38, which gives a beautiful glow and smells amazing. Also Lancôme UV Expert Supra Screen SPF 50 Invisible UV Serum (£41, which I use in place of moisturiser at the moment. Its invisible finish makes it an ideal base for make-up. The reusable DIEUX Forever eye masks (£22, and my Skin Enhancing treatment cleanser (£43, – it's hardworking, multifunctioning... I can't be without it. If I could do the make-up for anyone in history it would be Elizabeth Taylor. When I was starting out, I was recommended to work with her for an Aids Foundation charity event. I was beside myself with excitement, but sadly, she was unwell and unable to make the journey. Tragically, this was towards the end of her life. I will always feel devastated I didn't get to meet her that day.
