Jackson Summer Safety Series kicks off at Loomis Park
JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) — The City of Jackson's police and fire departments are teaming up for a family-friendly event—with the goal of highlighting the importance of public safety.
'You can't have public safety without community. It's just that simple,' said Chief of Jackson Police Chris Simpson.
Wednesday's gathering was the first of three, and an opportunity for local first responders to educate and stress the importance of working together with the people they serve to keep everyone safe.
'People in our community understand the need for public safety. They appreciate their public safety and we want to ensure that they know that we appreciate them as well,' Simpson said.
City officials joined the Group Violence Intervention Program in serving up hot dogs, playing games, and giving away prizes to the dozens of people who stopped by Loomis Park.
'It's a piece of the program for our community outreach piece. And it's very important. The importance of it lies in the collaboration with our community, the getting the feedback from our community, and the appreciation of our community,' Simpson said.
For parent Peggy Jennings, the event also means kids making connections with lawe enforcement.
'I think it's important for people to know the local police officers in your area and the fire department. Amelia is on the spectrum and I think it's important for her to know the police officers,' Jennings said.
Chief Simpson says continued community engagement will be important for public safety this summer and beyond.
'There's a big component of community because community drives us for our mission and our mission is to serve our community and protect it as well,' Simpson said.
The Summer Safety Series will continue next month on Wednesday, July 23, at the MLK Recration Center, and will conclude on Aug. 13, at Kiwanis Park.

Former Stewartville home park community operator agrees to pay $135,000 in settlement
Jun. 12—ST. PAUL — The former owner and operator of a manufactured home park community in Stewartville agreed to pay $135,000 after facing allegations that it submitted false claims to the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency. The state alleged that Sun Communities, Inc. violated three counts of the Minnesota False Claims Act, an act that works to combat fraud against the government. The civil complaint, filed in March 2024, alleged that Sun Communities attempted to evict several tenants for not paying their rent. However, in these instances, Sun Communities received the tenants' payments through RentHelpMN, a federally funded program created after COVID-19 that provides financial support to help Minnesota families pay rent. According to the complaint, Sun Communities "repeatedly affirmed" that it would not evict tenants for not paying rent after receiving their rent payments through the program. RentHelpMN required landlords like Sun Communities to comply with the "statutory and regulatory prohibition on evicting tenants." The state alleged that Sun Communities applied RentHelpMN to pay for "unlawful late fees, pet fees" and other unauthorized fees. Hennepin County District Judge Susan Burke ordered that $33,824.09 of the $135,000 be paid as restitution, which will be credited to the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency. "What Sun Communities did was unlawful," Attorney General Keith Ellison said in a release. "The pandemic created economic hardship, so the government stepped up and helped struggling families make rent payments. It is disappointing that any property owner would accept those payments and then still try to evict their tenants. Today, we are holding one of those property owners accountable. I am grateful to the whistleblower who helped bring this wrongdoing to light, and I encourage other Minnesotans who believe government funds are being misused to contact my office." Santa Ana man arrested on suspicion of kidnapping Bakersfield girl
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A Santa Ana man was arrested in Bakersfield on suspicion of kidnapping a teen girl who he met online while playing Fortnite, officials said. Sergio Estrada, 19, was arrested Wednesday in east Bakersfield after deputies say they found him walking with a girl who was reported missing. Man faces 500 years to life for sexually abusing child under 10 Sheriff's deputies initially responded to the 2400 block of Kentucky Street on June 11, for a report of a 14-year-old who was last seen the afternoon of June 10. The 14-year-old's mother told sheriff's deputies she believed her daughter was possibly in an intimate relationship with an 'older adult male' through the game 'Fortnite.' According to investigators, the teen and Estrada had been in contact with each other through social media for two years. Estrada was arrested and booked into the Lerdo Justice Facility for kidnapping, child stealing and contact with a minor with intent to commit a sexual offense, according to inmate records. ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is requesting the public's help in locating a missing man. Bryan J. Lambert is described as a 40-year-old, 6-foot-tall male with brown shoulder-length hair, weighing 190 pounds.
