Is Windows the Future of Xbox?

Yahoo4 hours ago

Microsoft dropped some new details about its next-generation Xbox, and it sure sounds like the next console will be very similar to a Windows PC. If so, this plan could conceivably lead to Steam on the Xbox.
Xbox President Sarah Bond hinted at big changes for the upcoming Xbox in an announcement on YouTube about AMD's involvement in providing the console's chips. It's not surprising that AMD has a role in the next Xbox, as it's provided hardware for Xbox in the past, but Bond managed to pack quite a few revelations into the short announcement video (below).
Bond kicked off the announcement by revealing a 'strategic, multi-year partnership with AMD' that will include the next generation Xbox 'in your living room and in your hands.'
As she finished that statement, she held her hands the way one would to hold Asus' upcoming ROG Xbox Ally, a Nintendo Switch-shaped portable gaming console running a custom version of Windows. The UI is that of Xbox, but it supports other stores, like Steam. Unfortunately, as Polygon points out, the Xbox Ally only plays Xbox games designed for PC play. Standard Xbox console games get left out.
To cap it off, Bond said the goal was to bring gamers 'an Xbox experience not locked to a single store or tied to a single device.'
'That's why we're working closely with the Windows team to ensure that Windows is the number one platform for gaming,' Bond added.
As we said, that has Steam written all over it in our eyes. Of course, other game stores will also want to get access to the console, but adding the Steam Store to the Xbox would be a huge win for gamers.
It's also worth noting that Bond said the upcoming Xbox hardware would maintain 'compatibility with your existing library of Xbox games.' That statement, perhaps more than any other she made during the video, suggests that Microsoft is determined to be gamer-centric. If the company forced gamers to ditch their game collections…well, Microsoft isn't doing that, so we don't need to imagine the chaos.
The next-gen Xbox should arrive sometime in 2027. The launch of the Asus ROG Xbox Ally was expected for 2025, so if that's any indication, we'd say development of the next Xbox is likely on track.

Pornhub Back Online in France After Court Ruling About Age Verification

Many porn sites, including Pornhub, YouPorn, and RedTube, all went dark earlier this month in France to protest a new age verification law that would have required the websites to collect ID from users. But those sites went back online Friday after a new ruling from a French court suspended enforcement of the law until it can be determined whether it conflicts with existing European Union rules, according to France24. Aylo, the company that owns Pornhub, has previously said that requiring age verification 'creates an unacceptable security risk' and warned that setting up that kind of process makes people vulnerable to hacks and leaks of sensitive information. The French law would've required Aylo to verify user ages with a government-issued ID or a credit card. The company favors age verification methods that are done by large tech companies like Microsoft and Apple at the device level and told France24 that the suspension of the law is an 'opportunity to reconsider more efficient approaches' for age verification. The government of France plans to appeal the suspension of the law to the Council of State, the highest administrative court in the country, according to France24. France is Pornhub's second largest market behind the U.S., according to the company's own figures. The Philippines, Mexico, and the United Kingdom make up the rest of the top five countries that visit Pornhub by traffic. Pornhub didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Age verification laws for porn websites has been a controversial issue globally, with the U.S. seeing a dramatic uptick in states passing such laws in recent years. Nineteen states now have laws that require age verification for porn sites, meaning that anyone who wants to access Pornhub in places like Florida and Texas need to use a VPN. Australia recently passed a law banning social media use for anyone under the age of 16, regardless of explicit content, which is currently making its way through the expected challenges. The law had a 12-month buffer built in to allow the country's internet safety regulator to figure out how to implement it. Tech giants like Meta and TikTok were dealt a blow on Friday after the commission issued a report stating that age verification 'can be private, robust and effective,' though trials are ongoing about how to best make the law work, according to ABC News in Australia.

Microsoft may abandon OpenAI negotiations

Microsoft is ready to step back from complex talks with OpenAI concerning their multibillion-dollar partnership, as the AI start-up aims to transform into a for-profit organisation, according to a report by the Financial Times. The discussions hinge on key points, including the extent of Microsoft's future ownership in OpenAI, with the tech giant contemplating maintaining its current deal, which extends to 2030, if no agreement is reached, the report said. Insiders familiar with the company's strategy told the FT that the company would continue using OpenAI's technology under existing terms unless a superior alternative is proposed. Nonetheless, both sides are engaging in daily discussions, expressing hope for a resolution. 'We have a long-term, productive partnership that has delivered amazing AI tools for everyone,' Microsoft and OpenAI stated jointly. 'Talks are ongoing and we are optimistic we will continue to build together for years to come.' OpenAI's transition to a for-profit model is vital to secure additional investment and pave the way for a potential stock market debut. Microsoft's consent is needed by the end of 2025 to avoid losing significant funding from backers like SoftBank. The talks have centred on Microsoft's possible equity share in the restructured OpenAI, with figures ranging from 20% to 49% for its $13bn investment so far. The partnership, initiated with Microsoft's $1bn commitment to OpenAI in 2019, is also being reassessed. Currently, Microsoft has sole rights to market OpenAI's models and earns 20% of revenues up to $92bn. Sources told the new agency that Microsoft is hesitant to relinquish its access to OpenAI's technology or its revenue portion. The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI considered alleging anti-competitive practices by Microsoft. 'Holding out is Microsoft's nuclear option . . . and they are just making OpenAI sweat,' a source near OpenAI said, noting that OpenAI's intellectual property is crucial for Microsoft to stay competitive against companies like Google and Meta. A source close to Microsoft countered that the company is satisfied with the current agreement and willing to uphold it until 2030. Microsoft has recently broadened its AI approach, integrating xAI's Grok model into its cloud services in May. Additional contract terms under discussion include Microsoft's exclusive rights to distribute OpenAI's software through Azure, its priority to supply computing infrastructure, and access to OpenAI's intellectual property before it achieves 'artificial general intelligence,' a provision likely to be eliminated. OpenAI's leaders, including Sam Altman and Sarah Friar, have highlighted difficulties in obtaining enough computing resources to support ChatGPT's 500 million weekly users and develop new models. Former Microsoft executives noted tensions over OpenAI's requests for quicker access to computing infrastructure. Even if a deal is finalised, it must pass regulatory review in Delaware and California and faces a legal challenge from Elon Musk, supported by ex-OpenAI staff. For OpenAI, an agreement with Microsoft is essential. Investors, including SoftBank, have linked their funding to the for-profit transition. If the shift is delayed or fails, SoftBank could reduce its $30bn investment by $10bn. Couchbase (BASE) Shares Skyrocket, What You Need To Know

Shares of database as a service company Couchbase (NASDAQ: BASE) jumped 31% in the afternoon session after the company agreed to be acquired by Haveli Investments in an all-cash deal valued at approximately $1.5 billion. This deal offers Couchbase stockholders $24.50 per share in cash, representing a 29% premium to the stock's closing price on June 18, 2025. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2025, subject to stockholder approval and regulatory clearances, after which Couchbase will become a privately held company. Overall, this can be considered a positive development for BASE's shareholders, given the improved possibility of exiting their position at a significantly higher price. Is now the time to buy Couchbase? Access our full analysis report here, it's free. Couchbase's shares are very volatile and have had 23 moves greater than 5% over the last year. But moves this big are rare even for Couchbase and indicate this news significantly impacted the market's perception of the business. The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 7 months ago when the stock dropped 23% on the news that the company reported weak third-quarter 2024 results and provided revenue guidance for the next quarter, which missed significantly - this matters much more as markets are forward-looking. The company provided conservative guidance due to macroeconomic challenges, limiting insights into upsell, migration timelines, and consumption trends. On the other hand, revenue and earnings came in ahead of expectations during the quarter. Still, this was a challenging quarter. Couchbase is up 58.6% since the beginning of the year, and at $24.67 per share, has set a new 52-week high. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Couchbase's shares at the IPO in July 2021 would now be looking at an investment worth $811.51.
