Nelson Mandela's legacy honoured with free medical procedures

Patient Zillah Vadivaloo with Mrs South Africa finalist Sarah Bond. Image: Supplied AS PART of its UniversalCare@Busamed programme, Busamed has honoured the legacy of Nelson Mandela by turning compassion into action during Mandela Month. Its hospitals across the country performed 67 free medical procedures - a symbolic tribute to the 67 years that Madiba dedicated to making a difference. What made this initiative especially powerful was the spirit behind it. Many of the staff stepped outside of their usual roles, volunteering their time and skills to reach those who needed it most - from surgical teams to administrative support. At Busamed Gateway Private Hospital, three free surgeries were performed. In a statement, the hospital said: "M Rajkumar lived with lower GI bleed and due to life changing surgery performed by general surgeon Dr Z Moolla, he can now live a pain free life. Miss C Chetty would have had to wait until 2027 to have hip surgery but surgery was performed by an orthopaedic surgeon at the hospital. She now looks forward to living a normal life. "Mrs Z Vadivaloo has a 33 year old son who has spastic quadriplegic paralysis with cortical blindness and is bedridden. All of his care was dependent on his mum. Due to her over the years picking him up, she could not manage with the pain on her right knee. But following a procedure, her quality of life and the quality of her son's life will improve." The hospital said the initiative aligned with its mission to build a healthier, more inclusive South Africa by increasing access to quality healthcare and supporting communities in meaningful and lasting ways. Hollow Knight: Silksong to be publicly playable for the first time at Gamescom 2025

Team Cherry's Hollow Knight: Silksong will be publicly playable for the first time at Gamescom 2025, according to Microsoft's official showcase announcement. The event will run from August 20 to 24, with Silksong featured at the Xbox booth on PC and the ROG Xbox Ally X handheld console. The upcoming demo is viewed by many as the most concrete indication yet that the long-awaited Metroidvania sequel is on track for its 2025 release. Microsoft revealed the news as part of its broader Gamescom programming, which includes several third-party titles expected to draw significant attention from attendees. Silksong will join other anticipated games at the Xbox booth, including Ninja Gaiden 4, Borderlands 4, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade. These titles will be available for hands-on testing by the public throughout the week. Xbox's dedicated Gamescom broadcast, scheduled for August 20 and 21, will also highlight Silksong and other first- and third-party games. Sarah Bond of Microsoft previously spoke about Silksong at June's Xbox Showcase, confirming the game would launch on Xbox One, Xbox Series X, ROG Xbox Ally X, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Nintendo Switch platforms. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass from launch day. Gamescom attendees will be among the first to try Hollow Knight: Silksong following years of anticipation since the game's initial announcement. The release date has not yet been confirmed but remains slated for late 2025.

Xbox will let you play Silksong at Gamescom in August

Microsoft will let Gamescom attendees play a demo of the long-awaited Hollow Knight: Silksong on the new ROG Xbox Ally handhelds. It's part of more than 20 titles that will be available at the Xbox booth at Gamescom, including a new theater experience to demonstrate The Outer Worlds 2. Silksong will be available to play on the new Xbox Ally devices at Gamescom, just months after Xbox president Sarah Bond revealed in June that Silksong will be available 'at launch and in Game Pass' when Asus' new handhelds launch later this year. Gamescom attendees will also get to try out Microsoft's new Xbox and Windows UI, as well as play Roblox, Sea of Thieves, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 on the new Xbox Ally handhelds. Grounded 2 will also be at Gamescom, as well as the first public hands-on of Ninja Gaiden 4. We've been waiting three years to get a Silksong release date, after Microsoft originally said in 2022 that the sequel to the indie side-scrolling action platformer was coming within 12 months. A playable demo at Gamescom sure makes it even more likely that Silksong will debut later this year. Posts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed. Analysis: Reports of more gaming layoffs at Microsoft spark questions about future of Xbox

(GeekWire File Photo / Nat Levy) Another wave of 'substantial' layoffs is expected to hit Microsoft's gaming division next week, according to a new report from Bloomberg, following earlier reporting from The Verge. The cuts will reportedly affect every department within the Xbox business. We reached out to Microsoft for details. This is the fourth major round of dismissals at Xbox in the last 18 months and the second in 2025, following a cut in January that affected an unknown number of workers. It also follows other reported layoffs impacting Microsoft's sales and marketing orgs, on top of the company's decision to lay off about 6,000 people in May. The latest round of gaming layoffs is an awkward capstone to Xbox's June, which has otherwise been marked by significant hype for the future. Microsoft began the month by unveiling the Xbox ROG Ally, a handheld gaming PC made in conjunction with the Taiwanese computer company Asus, which marks its entry into the portable console market. Xbox president Sarah Bond subsequently announced on June 17 that Microsoft has partnered with the American company AMD to 'co-engineer' the next generation of Xbox console hardware. On the one hand, this is perfectly in keeping with Xbox's established Play Anywhere initiative. While the company is still in the console market, its strategy for most of the last decade has been to chip away at the accepted definition of a video game console. Through cloud gaming, cross-platform support, and now portable systems, the idea is that the Xbox is an overall gaming experience that's wholly decoupled from any specific hardware. On the other, Bond noted during the June 17 reveal that Xbox is 'working closely with the Windows team to ensure that Windows is the number one platform for gaming.' In conjunction with the reveal that the Xbox Ally runs on Windows 11 Home and will be compatible with theoretically competitive storefronts like Steam, this has been seen as a tacit admission that the walls between Xbox and Windows will be getting even thinner in the future. Some analysts have gone so far as to forecast that the 10th-generation Xbox will simply be a specialized desktop PC. That, in turn, ties in with recent stories that Xbox is under pressure from Microsoft to increase profits, particularly in the wake of its costly acquisition of Activision-Blizzard. As per Microsoft's last quarterly report, its gaming division still runs in the black, but Xbox hardware sales are on the decline and it makes up a surprisingly small part of Microsoft as a whole. Against that backdrop, it's possible that the plan is to whittle down Xbox until it can be quietly consolidated into the Windows department. With the increasing focus on the Windows OS in Xbox, it suggests that future versions of the Xbox would simply be boutique items for consumers who're already invested in the Xbox gaming ecosystem, rather than standalone items in their own right. It's unlikely that Microsoft will actually exit the video game industry in the foreseeable future, but the picture painted here is that it's no longer willing to give Xbox as long a leash as it previously had. As a result, the next generation of Xbox hardware, such as it is, will also mark a pivotal moment for Xbox as a brand identity. As it approaches its 25th anniversary, Xbox is trying as hard as it can to be everywhere at once, but that runs a significant risk of putting it nowhere in particular.
