OVER 100 pupils at SK Ladang Pendas, Johor Baru, received essential school supplies, including new uniforms and shoes, as part of Sunway Group's Sinar Raya celebration.
Sunway City Iskandar Puteri chief executive officer Gerard Soosay said the event was part of the company's ongoing corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts to uplift underserved communities nationwide.
'Sunway's CSR programme has impacted over 17,000 beneficiaries across Malaysia this year through the distribution of bubur lambuk, packed meals, essential groceries and food baskets,' he said.
Also present were Johor Baru Education Department School Management Unit deputy director Suliman Kamsor and Sunway volunteers.
As part of its aim for digital education, Sunway also contributed 22 laptops to strengthen the school's information and communication technology (ICT) literacy programme.
'This is a collaboration with Sunway University and Pertubuhan Titian Digital Malaysia.
'We want to equip pupils with essential digital skills such as coding, graphic design and robotics.
'By supporting education, digital access and community needs, we aim to create a more inclusive and sustainable future for all,' Gerard said, adding that #SunwayforGood had positively impacted the lives of over half a million beneficiaries.
A 75-inch smart TV and a fully furnished ICT lab were also provided with support from the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation.

HLIB sees Sunway as prime domestic growth proxy, retains 'Buy' with RM5.90 target

KUALA LUMPUR: Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) is doubling down on Sunway Bhd's growth prospects, reiterating its BUY call with a sum-of-parts (SOP) target price of RM5.90, underpinned by rising exposure to Malaysia's accelerating economic upcycle. The investment bank's bullish stance cements Sunway as a key proxy for Malaysia's growth story heading into 2026. HLIB said Sunway is well-positioned to capitalise on domestic momentum, with multiple catalysts on the horizon – from stronger-than-expected construction order book wins and a potential conversion of its Medini land to freehold status to the planned healthcare arm listing in early 2026, which could unlock substantial shareholder value. Over the longer term, HLIB expects Sunway's property segment to stay resilient, supported by healthy take-up from phased launches, strategic landbank expansion, and leverage to the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), alongside steady progress in its Singapore-based projects. HLIB said the technical outlook for Sunway remains bullish. It noted that Sunway's share price has rebounded sharply from a double-bottom at RM4.00 (January 17) and RM3.93 (April 7), breaking above its 200-day moving average (RM4.65) to hit an all-time high of RM5.16 on July 18, before closing at RM4.74 on Monday. The investment bank sees the stockholding firm above the RM4.64 support level, with upside potential towards RM4.84, RM5.00, RM5.15, and RM5.32.

Property sector poised for ESG-driven growth

MBSB Research anticipates deeper integration of ESG principles into investment decisions and operations of property companies. PETALING JAYA: MBSB Research has maintained a 'positive' call on the property sector as developers continue to integrate environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles into their operations, with benefits seen in risk management, cost efficiency and long-term value creation. In a report, the research house said most developers under its coverage are included in the FTSE4Good Bursa Malaysia Index, which highlights companies that adopt practices to address ESG risks. 'We observed that property companies under our coverage saw higher adoption of ESG practices due to growing concerns about environmental impacts, social and governance issues,' it said. Among those with a four-star ESG grading are Sunway Bhd , IOI Properties Group Bhd (IOIProp), Mah Sing Group Bhd and Eco World Development Group Bhd , while S P Setia Bhd, Matrix Concepts Holdings Bhd and UOA Development Bhd hold three-star ratings. On the environmental front, initiatives include sustainable design features such as green certification, allocation of open green areas, energy-efficient building orientation and the use of low volatile organic compound paint. Developers are also installing solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems and electric vehicle charging stations for a more sustainable use of resources. MBSB Research said social initiatives are measured partly through the Construction Industry Development Board's QLASSIC scores, which assess workmanship quality. For example, Mah Sing achieved scores of between 80% and 86% for various projects, while Sunway's 2024 completions averaged 84%. Developers are also participating in affordable housing programmes to address supply gaps, especially in the affordable housing segments. From a governance standpoint, the research house noted that most developers set targets of zero corruption or bribery cases, conduct anti-corruption training and have committees overseeing audit, risk and sustainability matters, alongside policies on data privacy and cybersecurity. Notably, Mah Sing, Sunway, Eco World and IOIProp are leading in ESG adoption, particularly in sustainable design, renewable energy use and maintaining high construction quality. Other players such as S P Setia, Matrix Concepts and UOA Development are progressing towards stronger integration. 'We believe that embracing ESG principles is a pathway to long-term value creation, enhancing brand reputation and supporting long-term financial performance. 'Going forward, we anticipate deeper integration of ESG principles into investment decisions and operations of property companies as we believe ESG can help property companies make sound decisions and achieve better long-term returns,' it said. MBSB Research maintained 'buy' calls on Mah Sing, UOA Development and Matrix Concepts and 'neutral' on Eco World, S P Setia, Sunway and IOIProp.

Chief Adviser Yunus Urges Malaysian Conglomerates To Invest In Bangladesh

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 (Bernama-BSS) -- Chief Adviser Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday urged Malaysia's leading conglomerates to invest in Bangladesh's affordable housing, ports, healthcare and education sectors. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), the call came during a series of meetings in Kuala Lumpur with some of Malaysia's most prominent business leaders. Prof Yunus invited Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah, chairman and founder of the Sunway Group, to invest in affordable housing in Bangladesh — particularly for the growing number of factory workers living near industrial parks and economic zones. bootstrap slideshow 'It is time to invest in Bangladesh,' said Prof Yunus, highlighting the reforms undertaken by his government to create a more business-friendly environment. Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Harun underscored the urgent need for large-scale investment in housing and construction, especially in the south-eastern region where new ports and economic zones are being developed. 'Bangladesh is witnessing rapid urbanisation. We need massive investment to build homes and facilities for millions of workers and new city residents,' he said. He also encouraged the Sunway Group — one of Malaysia's largest healthcare providers — to establish hospitals in Bangladesh. Cheah responded that his companies would 'definitely' explore business opportunities in the country. He also expressed interest in offering scholarships to Bangladeshi students, noting that tens of thousands of Bangladeshis currently work in Sunway's construction and housing divisions. Praising Bangladeshi workers, Cheah revealed he had urged Malaysian authorities to extend their permitted stay beyond six years.
