Ronnie O'Sullivan's favourite ref shows true colours as snooker official retires
Michaela Tabb announced her retirement from traditional snooker earlier this week, with fellow female referee Tatiana Woollaston paying tribute by labelling her an "inspiration"
Ronnie O'Sullivan's favourite referee, Tatiana Woollaston, has paid a heart-warming tribute to a legendary female official who recently retired from traditional snooker.
Michaela Tabb, 57, bid farewell to the Crucible Theatre after overseeing the first five frames of the World Seniors Snooker Tour final between Alfie Burden and Aaron Canavan on Sunday. Tabb tore down barriers by becoming the first woman to referee at a world ranking tournament, before going on to be the first female to officiate a World Championship final at the Crucible in 2009.
The Somerset-born Scot also took charge of the 2012 final, having been fast-tracked by the snooker authorities and made her debut on the ranking circuit back in 2002.
She paved the way for a new generation of female referees in snooker, having cited the rise of younger officials as a reason for her being able to step back now.
Tabb will continue to referee the Snooker Legends 900, but several prominent figures in the sport have paid tribute by talking about her significant impact in recent days.
Among them is Woollaston, currently one of the top officials in the game. The Belarusian, who is married to Tour professional and recent World Championship participant Ben Woollaston, showed a great deal of respect towards Tabb and voiced her gratitude towards her 'inspiration' on social media.
Woollaston wrote on X following Tabb's retirement announcement: 'For all women, which now have an opportunity to get involved in the sport they love, there had to be THE FIRST and that was Michaela Tabb. Inspiration, history maker and an amazing person! Thank you and enjoy the retirement!'
Tabb had explained her decision to retire ahead of her final appearance in Sheffield, saying: 'I'm excited to hang up my gloves if I'm being honest, for traditional snooker. I think I've done my time.
"I'm getting to an age where it would be nice to watch other people doing that, especially after seeing another female coming up now and refereeing the final at the main World Championships.
"It's been like 15 years that we've been waiting for that to sort of happen. So I'm happy now to let the young guns do it.
'I will still work with Snooker Legends and I'll still do the 900 but for traditional snooker, my day will be finished. I feel emotional even just talking about it to be honest. Honestly, it could make me cry, and I was so lucky to have two finals and so many other matches as well.'
At the opposite end of her career, Woollaston made her own Crucible debut at the Covid-affected 2020 tournament. The 38-year-old took charge of a single-table match at the iconic venue for the first time at the 2024 World Championship, overseeing the semi-final showdown between Kyren Wilson and David Gilbert.
Last year, Tatiana refereed her first Triple Crown final, officiating the match between Judd Trump and Barry Hawkins at the UK Championship in York. The following day, the mother-of-two was back to her day job as a merchandiser for Next.
Tatiana has earned a reputation as one of the top referees, with seven-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan even calling her the "best ref in the world by a mile".
Her passion for the sport began at a young age while watching Russian language Eurosport with her father.

Snooker star Jackson Page begins very different job after landing huge 147 bonus
Jackson Page is not only a history-making snooker player, but now the proud owner of a trading card and collectibles shop. The 23-year-old continued to make good progress in his snooker career, enjoying the best season of his young career so far last time round. A run to his first ranking final at the Championship League and two more ranking quarter-finals were encouraging, but the highlight came in World Championship qualifying. The Welshman became the first player in the history of the game to make two 147s in the same match, doing so in a 10-2 demolition of Allan Taylor. The amazing achievement saw Page won a huge £147,000 bonus for making two maximums over the four biggest events on the calendar – he just only needed one game to do it. Some of those winnings have gone on a new venture, very different from potting balls, in Brynmawr, south Wales. AJ's Trading Cards opened at the end of last month and Action Jackson is loving taking his hobby to the next level. 'Everyone on tour knows that I am really into collectible stuff like Pokemon Cards and other things,' he told WST. 'I just decided it would be great to open up a shop as a bit of a thing on the side. 'It is a bit of an interest for me and something I like to do when I'm not focussing on snooker. It has been a brilliant experience seeing it open up, I obviously can't work in there as I'm a snooker player but I've got someone to work there and it is a good hobby to have.' 'We've got all sorts of things in there like Lego sets and Plushies, as well as the trading cards. It has been fun setting it up. We've got a few cards in there worth over £2,000. The most valuable and rare Pokemon Card we have is called a Moonbreon. 'When I was a kid I used to collect cards and I got back into it a couple of years ago. Now I'm in a position where I'm able to open a shop so I'll see how it goes. It will be exciting to see how it pans out. Mark Williams popped over the other day to see the shop, his boy is into it all as well. So it was nice to have him come along.' New world champion Zhao Xintong shares an interest with Page, as he showed by sporting the Pokemon Chimchar on his bowtie at the Crucible. The shop's owner hopes to see the world champ come and spend some of his £500,000 winnings. 'He's just won a fortune, so he could be a good customer,' he said. 'Despite being there for the final, I had no idea he had that on his bowtie. 'We have a Chimchar Funko Pop in the shop actually. I could maybe sell that to him!' Page made the two 147s in the penultimate round of World Championship qualifying but then was beaten by Joe O'Connor at the last hurdle before the Crucible. More Trending He said after that loss that he would swap the history and huge bonus for a trip to the Crucible, but is a bit more philosophical on the situation now. 'It was hard to be too disappointed coming off the back of what I'd just done and what I'd won,' he said. 'It would have been a great buzz to go to the Crucible, but Joe is a great player and he played well. 'There's swings and roundabouts, wins and losses. At the end of the day I need to come back next year and try to be in a position where I don't have to qualify.' Page gets the new season underway with a Wuhan Open qualifier against Ross Muir on June 24 and is back in action the following day in British Open qualifying against Elliot Slessor. Declan Gallagher lowdown: Why signing the experienced defender is a 'massive coup' for Ross County
Liam Polworth ranks Ross County's signing of experienced defender Declan Gallagher as 'massive' as they bid to make an instant return to the Premiership. Don Cowie's side slipped out of top table last month for the first time since 2018, which was their only campaign in the second tier throughout the past 13 years. Goalkeeper Logan Ross, defenders Ryan Leak, James Brown and Connall Ewan, midfielders Charlie Telfer, Josh Nisbet and Scott Allardice as well as forward Alex Samuel have left Dingwall since their relegation play-off loss to Livingston last month. The first piece of the puzzle for their Championship charge was to sign freed Dundee United defender Gallagher, who helped Jim Goodwin's Tangerines to a fourth-place spot in the Premiership. Former ICT star Polworth, who plays for Kilmarnock, was a Motherwell team-mate of Gallacher from 2019 until 2021 and he told The Press and Journal what he thought of the one-year deal to bring the 34-year-old north. He said: 'It's a massive signing, especially after dropping down to the Championship. 'To bring in Declan, who helped Dundee United qualify for Europe. He was a mainstay in their team. 'It was somewhat surprising they let him go, given how strong they were defensively. 'So, for Ross County to attract him to Dingwall is a massive coup. 'Everyone's aim when they come out of the Premiership is to get back there as soon as possible. 'Ross County will have decent financial backing I think and they will be doing everything they can to get back up.' It was during his time at Motherwell that Gallagher earned nine Scotland caps and Inverness-born Polworth feels the ex-Aberdeen centre-half offers qualities County will need to keep the door locked in defence. He said: 'When he was at Motherwell, Declan was getting international recognition, which is another massive factor for Ross County, to bring someone in with such experience. 'He's always been a strong defender and maybe he doesn't get as much credit as he deserves. 'He plays the ball out effectively from the back and that might well be the way Ross County want to play. 'They will have targeted the defensive area as a starting point, given how they went out of the league and that's why getting Declan is is such a positive signing.' County, along with fellow relegated top-flight side St Johnstone, will be seen as the main teams to beat for the title next season. However, Partick Thistle, Ayr United, Raith Rovers and Dunfermline will all be expected to be promotion contenders and Polworth admits picking a possible champion is never easy. He added: 'Teams can start the season as clear favourites in the Championship, but it often never works out like that. 'You have to play teams so many times that there is always a chance for someone to come out of nowhere to win it, so it's a difficult league to predict.' Last season, League One winners Falkirk were the champions, pipping Livingston, who took the play-off route to their top-flight return. Polworth, who switched from Motherwell to Kilmarnock four summers ago, made 32 appearances for the Rugby Park side last term. Manager Derek McInnes has moved to become the Hearts boss, with ex-Ross County gaffer Stuart Kettlewell replacing him in Ayrshire. After finishing ninth last term, Polworth, who is under contract for another year in Ayrshire, is keen for Killie to aim high, after qualifying Europe in 2023-24 as a result of being fourth. He said: 'It's going well, and I really enjoy it down here. 'Kilmarnock are a good club to play for. 'I'm looking forward to working under Stuart Kettlewell. It's something different. 'When a new manager comes in, everyone is on a level playing field, and out to impress and hopefully we can do well. 'Our home form has been strong in recent years, including helping us to get European football last season. 'It the same for all teams, if you can win your home games and back that up with some good away wins you really can end up doing well.' New Caley Thistle code for articles (both parts):
