Boston Celtics jersey history No. 23 - Ernie Barrett (1953-56)

USA Today11 hours ago

The Boston Celtics have had players suiting up in a total of 68 different jersey numbers (and have three others not part of any numerical series) since their founding at the dawn of the Basketball Association of America (BAA -- the league that would become today's NBA), worn by well over 500 players in the course of Celtics history.
To commemorate the players who wore those numbers, Celtics Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team.
With 25 of those jerseys now retired to honor some of the greatest Celtics to wear those jerseys, there is a lot of history to cover.
And for today's article, we will continue with the second of three people to wear the No. 23, Boston guard alum Ernie Barrett. After ending his college career at Kansas State, Barrett was picked up with the seventh overall selection of the 1951 NBA draft by the Celtics.
The Pratt, Kansas native would play the only two seasons of his NBA career with Boston, retiring from the league afterward.
During his time suiting up for the Celtics, Barrett wore only jersey No. 23 and put up 4.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game.

Josh Hart Has Hilarious Reaction to Knicks Head Coaching News

Josh Hart Has Hilarious Reaction to Knicks Head Coaching News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Knicks shocked many when they decided to move on from Tom Thibodeau following the team's elimination to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals. They will now have one of the top coaching vacancies in the NBA. Advertisement Thibodeau brought a lot of success to the Knicks during his time there. In five seasons with the team, the head coach managed to reach the NBA Playoffs in four of them. Thibodeau was also responsible for getting New York to their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance is 2000, falling short of their first NBA Finals appearance since 1999 by two wins. Leon Rose and the organization did not deem this to be enough. Citing a desire to be better-aligned with their championship dreams, the Knicks clearly did not believe Thibodeau would be the man to get them to the promised land. New York has looked in several directions ever since. Advertisement One of those directions involved retired coach Jay Wright. The Villanova players on the Knicks would be very familiar with Wright considering he served as the head coach for the school during their time there. Begley wrote, "With regard to reports/suggestions of Jay Wright as a Knick coaching candidate, yes, team president Leon Rose & Wright have a close relationship and speak regularly. Because of that, Rose knows Wright is very happy as a retiree, per league source. So Wright is not a candidate for the job, league source said." Advertisement Josh Hart had no love lost for his old coach. The Knicks fan favorite responded to the report from Begley, joking about his lack of desire to reunite with Wright. Hart can sleep easy at night knowing whatever prompted this response will be kept away from his current organization. Major Update in New York Knicks' Head Coaching Search Emerges

Major Update in New York Knicks' Head Coaching Search Emerges originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Knicks have to be pretty used to rejection by now. The team has attempted to contact several NBA teams to interview their coaches and have been rejected time and time again. Advertisement The Knicks requested to interview four active NBA head coaches: Jason Kidd, Chris Finch, Ime Udoka, and Quin Snyder. The Dallas Mavericks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Houston Rockets, and Atlanta Hawks all told New York to kick rocks. After all of those interview requests were rejected, the Knicks have started to fixate on names that do not require the approval of another team. Two coaches, in particular, have been linked to New York recently. New York Knicks' Karl-Anthony Towns with Jalen Brunson in a game against the Memphis Grizzlies at Thomas-Imagn Images According to James L. Edwards III of The Athletic, Taylor Jenkins and Mike Brown will both be interviewing for the Knicks' head coaching vacancy next week. They are considered the 'leading candidates.' Advertisement These should be two coaches that NBA fans are largely familiar with. The former of the two will be the one more fresh in everyone's minds. Jenkins was unexpectedly fired by the Memphis Grizzlies before the conclusions of their 2024-25 NBA season. The Grizzlies opted to give the reins to Tuomas Iisalo instead, who went from the interim coach to the full-time replacement. Jenkins has a 250-214 coaching record in the regular season during his team as the lead bench boss. The former Grizzlies coach enjoyed two 50-win seasons and three trips to the postseason with Memphis. The Grizzlies never quite delivered playoff success during Jenkins' time in Memphis. The Knicks coaching candidate has a 9-14 record in the postseason. Advertisement Brown is notable for his head coaching stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Sacramento Kings. He was also fired in the 2024-25 NBA season, putting an end to his time in Sacramento. Both names here bring familiarity. However, it is easily debatable if either represents a significant upgrade over recently-fired Tom Thibodeau. Knicks Could Pursue Celtics Champion After Recent Boston Trades

Knicks Could Pursue Celtics Champion After Recent Boston Trades originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Lacking depth was a big reason the New York Knicks had their key players taking on a massive load of minutes in the 2025 NBA Playoffs. Tom Thibodeau's coaching style was another. With Thibs out the door, bolstering the reinforcements for the Knicks' next coach will be key. Advertisement Their hated division rivals, the Boston Celtics, could actually be a source of help here. The Celtics are undergoing a serious makeover amid a financial crunch, leaving the door open to steal their talent. One name in particular has been brought up a couple of times as a good match for the Knicks. That player would be Al Horford. Boston Celtics center Luke Kornet and center Al Horford walk off the court during a Dedmon-Imagn Images Horford is exactly the type of veteran presence any team would love to have in the rotation. The former champion knows his best days are behind him and maximizes his role in any rotation with the top attributes still available to him. Knicks insider Ian Begley speculated, once more, that Horford moving from Boston to New York made a ton of sense. The NBA insider wrote about it in his most recent round of Knicks Notes. Advertisement "I think the Knicks will take a look at the guard market for a bench player," Begley stated. "Also, ESPN reports that Celtics veteran Al Horford will have a robust market this offseason. I think the Knicks will also at least check in on Horford's situation in Boston." The writer continued, "The Celtics shed salary by trading Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis and they certainly want Horford back, but are limited in what they can offer the veteran big man." Begley wrapped up the discussion about the situation with one final nugget. "Just as an aside: Horford has a close relationship with Karl-Anthony Towns," the insider noted. Advertisement Having the strong leadership of someone like Horford would give the Knicks a sense of huge reliability coming off the bench, or perhaps even in the starting lineup. The move is certainly worth exploring for New York in the coming weeks.
