Elon Musk's Neuralink closes Series E funding round
The Series E fundraise included investors such as ARK Invest, Founders Fund, Sequoia Capital, and Thrive Capital, among others, the company said in a blog post.
Neuralink last raised a 280-million-dollar Series D funding round in 2023, with an additional 43-million-dollar tranche added months later.
The company said it has now conducted more human clinical trials, implanting its brain chips in five individuals with severe paralysis.
In May, Neuralink received Breakthrough Device Program from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The Breakthrough Devices Program is a voluntary program for certain medical devices and device-led combination products that provide for more effective treatment or diagnosis of life-threatening or irreversibly debilitating diseases or conditions, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
The program is intended to provide patients and health care providers with timely access to medical devices by speeding up development, assessment, and review for premarket approval.

Botswana continues negotiations with U.S. to further reduce tariffs
GABORONE, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Botswana is negotiating with the United States to further reduce or eliminate the U.S. tariffs on its exports, the Botswanan government said in a statement on Friday. "These discussions aim to address the specific concerns of both parties and strengthen bilateral trade ties," said the statement from the Ministry of Trade and Entrepreneurship. The ministry informed the business community and the general public that, effective Aug. 7, 2025, the U.S. government has adjusted its tariff rates for its foreign trading partners, including Botswana, the statement noted. Under the revised structure, the tariffs imposed on Botswana's exports to the United States have been reduced to 15 percent, down from the previous 37 percent announced on April 2, it said. The developments take place within a dynamic and evolving global trade environment, and further adjustments may be introduced in the future, said the statement, adding that the ministry will continue to provide timely updates as the situation develops.

Chinese and Asean experts gather to explore the region's digital future
KUALA LUMPUR (Xinhua): South-East Asian nations are poised to accelerate their adoption of new technologies and the digitalization of their societies, Malaysian Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo has said. China's significant advantages in artificial intelligence (AI), cross-border systems, and other emerging high-technology fields will enable members of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean), including Malaysia, to ensure their efforts reach all levels of society, ensuring inclusive and sustainable development, Gobind said in his remarks at the 2025 China Mobile Southeast Asia Cooperation Conference. "Building a digital future requires deep cooperation with partners such as China. China holds significant advantages in next-generation network deployment, edge intelligence, AI applications, and cross-border digital platforms. Malaysia highly values its cooperation with China in the digital domain, and we welcome further collaboration," he said. For his part, Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing said in his remarks that in recent years, digital economy cooperation between China and Asean has entered a new stage of comprehensive depth, with Malaysia and China in particular having signed memorandums of understanding (MoU) to enhance investment and cooperation in the digital economy. "These emphasize the importance of seizing opportunities brought by the digital economy, green development, and AI. This not only brings development benefits to the people of both countries but also sets a new benchmark for regional digital economy development," he said. Meanwhile, China Mobile Communications Group Co., Ltd. Executive Vice President Li Huidi said that AI is now at the forefront of a new wave of technological and industrial transformation, becoming increasingly user-friendly and widely accessible, and emerging as a new driver of social progress. "Southeast Asia is emerging as a global hub for AI, driven by a young population, strong economic growth, and supportive national strategies. Its rapidly improving computing infrastructure is laying a solid foundation for AI development and deployment," he said, adding that China Mobile is willing to work with partners from all sectors through close collaboration. Under the theme "Envisioning Intelligent Ecosystems, Empowering the Digital Future," the conference, organized by China Mobile, brings together leaders from government, the telecommunications industry, and academia to discuss the region's digital landscape. - Xinhua

Apple rejects Musk's claim of App Store bias toward ChatGPT
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 15 — Apple on Thursday rejected Elon Musk's claim that its digital App Store favours OpenAI's ChatGPT over his company's Grok and other rival AI assistants. Musk has accused Apple of giving unfair preference to ChatGPT on its App Store and threatened legal action, triggering a fiery exchange with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman this week. 'The App Store is designed to be fair and free of bias,' Apple said in reply to an AFP inquiry. 'We feature thousands of apps through charts, algorithmic recommendations, and curated lists selected by experts using objective criteria.' Apple added that its goal at the App Store is to offer 'safe discovery' for users and opportunities for developers to get their creations noticed. But earlier this week, Musk said Apple was 'behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation,' without providing evidence to back his claim. 'xAI will take immediate legal action,' he said on his social media network X, referring to his own artificial intelligence company, which is responsible for Grok. X users responded by pointing out that China's DeepSeek AI hit the top spot in the App Store early this year, and Perplexity AI recently ranked number one in the App Store in India. DeepSeek and Perplexity compete with OpenAI and Musk's startup xAI. Altman called Musk's accusation 'remarkable' in a response on X, charging that Musk himself is said to 'manipulate X to benefit himself and his own companies and harm his competitors and people he doesn't like.' Musk called Altman a 'liar' in the heated exchange. OpenAI and xAI recently released new versions of ChatGPT and Grok. App Store rankings listed ChatGPT as the top free app for iPhones on Thursday, with Grok in seventh place. Factors going into App Store rankings include user engagement, reviews and the number of downloads. Grok was temporarily suspended on Monday in the latest controversy surrounding the chatbot. No official explanation was provided for the suspension, which followed multiple accusations of misinformation including the bot's misidentification of war-related images — such as a false claim that an AFP photo of a starving child in Gaza was taken in Yemen years earlier. Last month, Grok triggered an online storm after inserting antisemitic comments into answers without prompting. In a statement on Grok's X account later that month, the company apologised 'for the horrific behavior that many experienced.' A US judge has cleared the way for a trial to consider OpenAI legal claims accusing Musk — a co-founder of the company — of waging a 'relentless campaign' to damage the organisation after it achieved success following his departure. The litigation is another round in a bitter feud between the generative AI start-up and the world's richest person. Musk founded xAI in 2023 to compete with OpenAI and the other major AI players. — AFP
