Under the bonnet, the 1 Series boasts a revamped engine lineup focused on efficiency. This means a 118 and 135 as the engine choices with the three-cylinder in both the 1 Series and 2 Series producing 115kW and 230Nm from its 1 499 cc capacity.
The pair again share the same engine specifications for the M135 xDrive and M235 xDrive and this four cylinder mill generates 233kW and 400Nm from its 1 998 cc volume.
A launch drive with, admittedly, not enough in the way of twisty bits to truly put the cars to the test did allow for some time to cogitate on the competency BMW is building into its engines – the three-cylinder unit never sounding like a 'threefer' and producing a smooth, quiet and completely efficient driving experience with enough to make overtaking easy, while being gentle on the fuel gauge.
The updated 2 Series Gran Coupé mirrors its sibling's tech advancements while leaning into sporty sophistication.

Petrolhead delight
The xDrive versions remain petrolhead delights and unleash from rest to heady speeds in the blink of an eye, yet managing this with no intrusive engine or wind noise – and this before even turning on the engine in Sport mode.
On reflection and bearing in mind so many of our roads are pothole developments hamstrung by bits of tarmac, the rational choice would be the 118.
Finance
BMW Finance has also introduced a Guaranteed Future Value (GFV) and the 118 (R795 895) would cost R9 772 in monthly payments with a 10% deposit. Taken over 48 months the interest rate would be 10,08% and the GFV R505 450.
If the buyer handed the car back to BMW at the end of the terms and bought a new car, the total cost to them of that 'usage' would be R548 646. Should they wish to own the car they would have to pay in R505 450.
On a traditional lease over 60 months and an interest rate of 11,20%, the total cost comes to R1 100 473 with a balloon payment at the end of R318 458.
BMW has also prioritised sustainability through resource-conscious production methods and material recycling.
Digitalisation takes centre stage inside, with BMW Operating System 9 powering an array of connected services.

Interior
Inside, the cabin integrates the latest BMW iDrive system with QuickSelect, offering intuitive control over infotainment, automated driving aids and in-car gaming via BMW Operating System 9. Enhanced parking assistance and driver-assistance systems further elevate the tech offering.
The updated 2 Series Gran Coupé mirrors its sibling's tech advancements while leaning into sporty sophistication. Its elongated silhouette features a low front grille, a flowing roofline and a muscular rear with discreet exhaust integrations (excluding the M235 xDrive variant).
The side profile highlights a pronounced shoulder line and the iconic Hofmeister kink, now subtly branded with a numeral '2'.
Digitalisation takes centre stage inside, with BMW Operating System 9 powering an array of connected services. The M Sport and M Sport Pro packages amp up the visual drama, while adaptive LED headlights (optional) add matrix beams and cornering functionality.
Both models underscore BMW's commitment to reducing environmental impact. Efficient engines, recyclable materials and energy-efficient production processes aim to minimise their carbon footprint.
'These updates reflect our focus on driver engagement without compromising sustainability,' says Neo Sibeko, product manager for BMW Compact Class. 'From chassis enhancements to smart digitalisation, every detail is crafted to deliver a premium, forward-thinking experience.'

Mercedes-AMG unleashes E53 and CLE 53 models in South Africa: pricing announced

The new Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid 4Matic (top) and CLE 53 4Matic are now available in South Africa. Image: Supplied Mercedes-AMG has released two new '53' badged models in South Africa. Until the more extreme '63' versions arrive, the new Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid Sedan and CLE 53 Coupe will be the most potent models in their respective line-ups. But how much do they cost? The new E53 Hybrid 4Matic Sedan is now on sale for R2,499,596, while the CLE 53 4Matic+ Coupe gets into your garage for R2,065,982. They might sound technically similar, but they are both very different variations of AMG's latest six-cylinder turbocharged petrol powertrain. Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid To that end, the E53 is a fully-blown plug-in hybrid, pairing the aforementioned straight-six engine with a 120kW electric motor for system outputs of 430kW and 750Nm. With Race Start mode activated, which momentarily raises maximum output to 450kW, the midsize sedan will sprint from 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds, while the top speed can be electronically raised to 280km/h with the AMG Driver's Package. Launch drive: Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid Elite AWD is a bold step into the future of SUVs

the new Hyundai Santa Fe hybrid has 1.6-litre turbo-charged petrol engine combined with an electric motor for a power output of 175kW and 367Nm. Image: Supplied Whether we like it or not, New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) are an inevitable part of the motoring landscape. So whether it's a full battery electric vehicle (BEV), plug-in hybrid, hybrid or mild hybrid, manufacturers are launching a myriad of options to the public. They all have their strengths and weaknesses but for a country like South Africa, the hybrid option seems to make the most sense. Hyundai, which has a number of award winning BEVs in their stable with models like the IONIQ 5, IONIQ 5 N, IONIQ 6 and Kona Electric as well as a couple of hybrids, are the latest manufacturer to come to the local party with the Santa Fe Hybrid Elite AWD. It garnered the 2025 Women's Car of the Year as well as the Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) of the Year at the Awards. Makeover The Santa Fe has had a complete makeover and as part of the 'Reimagined' strategy, Hyundai have dumped the cookie-cutter SUV look for a much bolder and boxier design. It certainly stands out from the crowd and despite its shape, it has a drag coefficient of 0.29, thanks to the design of the side windows, under body covering, inset wheels and active front airflaps that open only when cooling is needed. Power Gone is the popular diesel option that's no longer fitted to the Santa Fe, and instead it gets a four-cylinder 1.6-litre turbo-charged petrol engine with 132kW and 265Nm that incorporates a starter generator in the transmission for smooth stop-start and electric to ICE adjustment. A 44.2kW and 264Nm electric motor is fitted on the front axle and the two combined provide 175kW and 367Nm with low speed electric driving and assisted ICE thrust that should provide fuel consumption of 6.6l/100km. Power is sent to all four wheels via an automatic six-speed wet clutch torque converter. Apart from the angular styling, the eye-catching front and rear H-shaped LED lights incorporate four dots that spell 'H' in Morse code. Video Player is loading. Image: Supplied Interior Inside, the seven-seater has acres of space for passengers including a double stacked centre console with two charging pads, synthetic leather and a large touchscreen display with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto connectivity. By adjusting it to the desired setting, you can also see how power is transferred between ICE and electric and how the battery is regenerated. A secondary screen below the air vents controls air conditioning settings, heated steering wheel and the front vented or heated seats (the second row of seats are heated too). The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster provides crisp readouts and displays all the necessary information. The interior of the new Hyundai Santa Fe is mostly digital. Image: Supplied How does it drive? The gear shifter is mounted on the steering column and once you shift to Drive, the Santa Fe provides a really pleasant driving experience. The paddles behind the steering wheel are to set the resistance for regenerative braking while you can toggle between Eco, Comfort, Sport and Smart Modes, the latter adapting according to your driving style. The hybrid powertrain is well-sorted and combines well to provide enough power to keep the Santa Fe cruising along nicely. You're not going to pull the skin off your face but it's suitably balanced to provide an almost elegant experience behind the wheel.

BMW E1: The unlikely 1991 concept that quietly shaped the future of EVs

Looking at the pictures of this dumpy, rust-coloured city car, you're no doubt wondering how such a creation could find its way onto our Cool Concepts page, but BMW's E1 was more cutting-edge and influential than its pedestrian appearance would suggest. Looking for a new or used vehicle? Find it here with CARmag! Unveiled at the 1991 Frankfurt Motor Show in response to tightening emissions laws coming out of the United States (remember, in the 80s, between 70 and 80% of cars there were V8-engined), the E1 was a product of BMW Technik GmbH: the same engineering division that brought us such novelties as the Z1 and the zany Z18, which placed a Z3 roadster-style body on a high-riding SUV chassis. BMW was all too aware of the limitations of battery technology at the time, especially with regard to operating range and charging, so it chose to develop E1 as an urban mobility solution. Related: All-New Honda Amaze Lands in SA – Pricing and Spec Unlike many concepts, which are little more than an eye-catching shell on a chassis, powered by a golf cart motor, the E1 was built as a fully roadworthy prototype. This meant that in addition to accommodating the practical considerations and high-quality cabin materials typical of BMWs, the E1 also had to conform to the crash-safety standards of the day. To achieve this, the car was not only fitted with dual front airbags, but also utilised an innovative construction comprising an aluminium frame clad with plastic panels that was both tough and lightweight. A rear axle-mounted electric motor fed by sodium-sulphur batteries mounted under the rear seat (another nod to production-viable crash safety) developed a modest 37kW but was good for a top speed of 120km/h and a very respectable range of 200km. Charging was achieved via a standard electrical socket, using a plug stashed in one of the E1's kidney grille panels, and took six hours. Related: Toyota Celebrates 40 Years at Le Mans With Throwback Liveries These features may not seem that significant by current standards, but they were cutting-edge at a time when EVs were little more than an automotive pipe dream. Unfortunately, the E1 was perhaps a little too far ahead of its time in some regards. Deficiencies in the cooling systems needed for the sodium-sulphur batteries, which had the double-threat disadvantages of high optimal operating temperature and highly combustible innards, were revealed when the original prototype caught fire while charging, destroying the car and part of an adjacent building. Consequently, BMW utilised more stable sodium-nickel chloride batteries for its successor, the 1993 Z15 concept. The E1 may have looked bizarre and been limited by the battery technology of the time (not to mention sadly combustible) but its design and architecture would go on to form the blueprint for BMW's first production-series EV, the i3, as well as casting the die for the growing range of impressive i EV models to come.
