Mercedes-AMG has released two new '53' badged models in South Africa.
Until the more extreme '63' versions arrive, the new Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid Sedan and CLE 53 Coupe will be the most potent models in their respective line-ups.
But how much do they cost?
The new E53 Hybrid 4Matic Sedan is now on sale for R2,499,596, while the CLE 53 4Matic+ Coupe gets into your garage for R2,065,982.
They might sound technically similar, but they are both very different variations of AMG's latest six-cylinder turbocharged petrol powertrain.
Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid
To that end, the E53 is a fully-blown plug-in hybrid, pairing the aforementioned straight-six engine with a 120kW electric motor for system outputs of 430kW and 750Nm.
With Race Start mode activated, which momentarily raises maximum output to 450kW, the midsize sedan will sprint from 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds, while the top speed can be electronically raised to 280km/h with the AMG Driver's Package.

The Mercedes-AMG E53 is plug-in hybrid with up to 100km of range.
Image: Supplied
The battery has an 'everyday capacity' of 21.22 kWh, which Mercedes says is sufficient to enable an all-electric range of up to 100km. As standard it comes with 11kW worth of AC charging power, but a 60kW DC fast charger is available upon request, allowing a 10% to 80% charge in about 20 minutes.
The hybrid system integrates with an AMG Speedshift 9G transmission and a fully variable AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system. Dynamically it also benefits from a newly developed and tuned AMG Ride Control suspension with adaptive damping adjustment, and rear axle steering.
Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Coupe
The CLE 53 4Matic+ is what you might call a mild hybrid model, with a 48-volt on-board electrical system and no electric-only driving capability.
It features the same six-cylinder turbo engine as its E53 cousin, with 330kW and 560Nm available under normal conditions, and an additional 17kW and 205Nm electric boost is available briefly on overboost.
The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 is mild hybrid.
Image: Supplied
Like the E53, it features the 9G Speedshift transmission, fully-variable all-wheel drive, uniquely tuned adaptive suspension and rear-axle steering.
The E53 and CLE 53, as you'd expect, are set apart by a glut of model-specific exterior features, including unique frontal design elements and standard 19-inch wheels, with larger options available.
Equally, the cabins of both cars feature a host of bespoke adornments, including AMG-specific displays, while the E53 is available with the MBUX 'Superscreen' which includes a passenger-side display.
The E53 is available with Merc's Superscreen.
Image: Supplied
Both models are sold with the Mercedes PremiumDrive Comfort Care Service and Maintenance Plan, valid for five years or 100,000km.

Launch drive: Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid Elite AWD is a bold step into the future of SUVs
the new Hyundai Santa Fe hybrid has 1.6-litre turbo-charged petrol engine combined with an electric motor for a power output of 175kW and 367Nm. Image: Supplied Whether we like it or not, New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) are an inevitable part of the motoring landscape. So whether it's a full battery electric vehicle (BEV), plug-in hybrid, hybrid or mild hybrid, manufacturers are launching a myriad of options to the public. They all have their strengths and weaknesses but for a country like South Africa, the hybrid option seems to make the most sense. Hyundai, which has a number of award winning BEVs in their stable with models like the IONIQ 5, IONIQ 5 N, IONIQ 6 and Kona Electric as well as a couple of hybrids, are the latest manufacturer to come to the local party with the Santa Fe Hybrid Elite AWD. It garnered the 2025 Women's Car of the Year as well as the Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) of the Year at the Awards. Makeover The Santa Fe has had a complete makeover and as part of the 'Reimagined' strategy, Hyundai have dumped the cookie-cutter SUV look for a much bolder and boxier design. It certainly stands out from the crowd and despite its shape, it has a drag coefficient of 0.29, thanks to the design of the side windows, under body covering, inset wheels and active front airflaps that open only when cooling is needed. Power Gone is the popular diesel option that's no longer fitted to the Santa Fe, and instead it gets a four-cylinder 1.6-litre turbo-charged petrol engine with 132kW and 265Nm that incorporates a starter generator in the transmission for smooth stop-start and electric to ICE adjustment. A 44.2kW and 264Nm electric motor is fitted on the front axle and the two combined provide 175kW and 367Nm with low speed electric driving and assisted ICE thrust that should provide fuel consumption of 6.6l/100km. Power is sent to all four wheels via an automatic six-speed wet clutch torque converter. Apart from the angular styling, the eye-catching front and rear H-shaped LED lights incorporate four dots that spell 'H' in Morse code. Video Player is loading. Image: Supplied Interior Inside, the seven-seater has acres of space for passengers including a double stacked centre console with two charging pads, synthetic leather and a large touchscreen display with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto connectivity. By adjusting it to the desired setting, you can also see how power is transferred between ICE and electric and how the battery is regenerated. A secondary screen below the air vents controls air conditioning settings, heated steering wheel and the front vented or heated seats (the second row of seats are heated too). The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster provides crisp readouts and displays all the necessary information. The interior of the new Hyundai Santa Fe is mostly digital. Image: Supplied How does it drive? The gear shifter is mounted on the steering column and once you shift to Drive, the Santa Fe provides a really pleasant driving experience. The paddles behind the steering wheel are to set the resistance for regenerative braking while you can toggle between Eco, Comfort, Sport and Smart Modes, the latter adapting according to your driving style. The hybrid powertrain is well-sorted and combines well to provide enough power to keep the Santa Fe cruising along nicely. You're not going to pull the skin off your face but it's suitably balanced to provide an almost elegant experience behind the wheel.

Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4Matic+ Coupé touches down in Mzansi
Mercedes-Benz South Africa's new product assault continues this week with the arrival of the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4Matic+ Coupé. Positioned at the performance end of the CLE range, this model stands apart from its standard siblings with a series of AMG-specific design cues including a sculpted bonnet featuring two prominent 'power dome' ridges, an A-shaped AMG grille and reshaped full-LED headlights. A bespoke front bumper with enlarged air intakes aids cooling and completes the coupé's assertive front-end treatment. Additional visual distinctions include flared front and rear fenders allowing for a wider track (+58mm fore, +75mm aft), lightweight 19-inch alloy wheels (20-inch wheels are available as a cost option), a set of round double tailpipe trims and a pronounced boot spoiler. Under the bonnet is a 3.0l twin-turbocharged in-line-six producing 330kW and 560Nm of torque — or 600Nm with a brief overboost function. Supplementing this is an integrated starter-generator that adds 17kW and 205Nm for short bursts, helping to reduce turbo lag and enhance low-end response. Power is delivered to all four wheels via a nine-speed AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission and a fully variable 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system. Mercedes-AMG claims a 0—100km/h sprint of 4.2 seconds, with top speed electronically capped at 250km/h. Opting for the AMG Driver's Package raises this to 270km/h. Image: Supplied AMG Dynamic Select is fitted as standard and allows owners to select one of five drive modes: Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual. Each mode alters the behaviour of the powertrain, transmission, steering, suspension and exhaust. Other go-faster tech spliced into the CLE 53 4Matic+ Coupé includes three-stage AMG speed-sensitive steering, rear-axle steering, three ESP control strategies (Basic, Advanced and Pro) and an AMG Ride Control chassis with steel springs and adaptive dampers that can be toggled between Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes. Stopping power is provided by an AMG high-performance brake system consisting of perforated 370mm discs and four-piston fixed calipers up front and 360mm rotors paired with single-piston floating calipers at the rear. Inside the cabin you can look forward to supportive front seats upholstered in artificial leather and suede, an 11.9-inch MBUX touchscreen infotainment system, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with three display modes (Classic, Sport and Supersport), a flat-bottomed AMG Performance steering wheel, 64 hue ambient lighting and a range of special AMG-specific displays including engine telemetry data, a G-metre and lap-timer. The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4Matic+ Coupé is now available at local dealerships, priced from R2,065,982, including a five-year/100,000km maintenance and warranty plan.
